I went to bed with 2 earthquakes in the last 24 hours to this! Merry Christmas! If you are lucky enough to be staying at the Volcano House what a show you have!
A dinner tonight at the Volcano House would be a memorable event.......if you can get a reservation. I've had dinner at the Volcano House when the eruption was in the Candera. It was an awesome dinner especially with the cloud cover turning bright orange with each lava fountain outburst.
Wow. One of the most amazing exerpiences of my life was to see Kilauea erupt in person both in the crater and at the coast. Earth continuing to create itself is an amazing sight. Merry Christmas to all!!
Thank you, Shawn, for putting this video and narrative together. It's so helpful that you're taking the time to grab important phases of this latest eruption. The sound was so impressive.
Shawn: Merry Christmas 🎄 and thanks for your efforts of the past year+ to bring spectacular nature into my living room. Your explanations to this non-geologist have made the experience so special and rewarding.
What a great Christmas gift! Thanks for sharing, Willsey! Thanks for a great year in the name of Geologi, and also thank you for all the amazing videos you have shared this year! Looking forward to follow you next year. Marry Christmas and happy new year to you, too. Greetings from Cailie in Denmark 🇩🇰
Hi Shawn, as a teenager (I’m now 52!) if ever I got a rather large pimple on my face I always said "I’ve got another Mount Kilauea on my chin" 😂 ….. thanks for your always brilliant updates and in this case bringing back some memories! … hope everyone stays safe there ……. Jan x❤x
Thank you Shawn, we have stayed in the cabins here in the park. You could stand and imagine the volcano erupting. Today we can actually ly watch an erupting!
So spectacular! My husband & I went to Hawaii on our honeymoon back in 2001 and visited Volcano National Park and the Volcano House museum. It was a wonderful trip, but not as exciting as this is now. So happy we can view this from the East coast!
Amazing apparent effusive rate. Neat to see how fast lava can cover the crater floor. Love the quick pan across the floor showing the multiple vent sites. Thanks Shawn.
That tree hanging on in spite of all Kilauea throws at it! Thank you for covering this eruption Shawn! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!
So, Christmas came early this year! ;) I saw the USGS news and I knew you would do an update, so thanks for the video and analysis, Shawn :)) Kīlauea is putting on an incredible show!! And the sound is pretty impressive too! I remember that in another of your videos about Iceland, you described it as the sound of a jet, but pulsating... I really wish I could witness an eruption! Happy Holidays! À bientôt ! :)
Shawn, you are amazing for doing this analysis 2 days before Christmas! Thank you for taking your time to do this. Hope you and your family have a great Christmas as well as the rest of the "team". Happy Holidays everyone! ❤
Did Santa fly over Hawaii & hit that volcano with the skid on his Sleigh? What a sweet gift. And thank you, Shawn, for hopping on the video so quickly. Merry Christmas, everyone!
Crazy cool. The flyover with sound was awesome. It sounds like a big scoop at a quarry, pouring tailings onto a pile. It would be neat to be near enough to feel the vibration, but breathing volcanic gasses isn't neat, unfortunately.
Wow. Thanks Shawn for the update in HI. What a nice Xmas gift for all to see. Hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Greatly appreciate all you do.
Kilauea having much larger lava fountains in this eruption compared to recent summit eruptions. Pretty safe to say Kilauea has fully rebuilt its magma chamber after that collapse in 2018 now.
Ooooo, that is so cool! The fountains are spectacular, thanks! I was just thinking about the silly old movies I watched as a kid where a native girl was chosen to throw herself into an erupting volcano to appease the volcano god. The movie volcanoes looked nothing like the real thing.
Wow thanks for the update, Shawn. It's very pretty. I actually thought the dead tree there was very artistic lol! I have been watching Fuego in Guatemala. It's been huffing and puffing ash and lava in quite a spectacular fashion. Once or twice most of it was covered with lava. A lot of gases releasing from the lower flanks of Fuego and rolling upwards as well, and I was wondering if that was normal? Sorry my question isn't about Kilauea. I have been keeping a loose eye on it, waiting for something to happen at Kilauea, but I got sidetracked by Fuego the last couple of days, lol! That will teach me to blink eh? Merry Christmas, y'all, and a much more better New Year!
Thanks Shawn. I remember being there in 1974 with my dad. We visited the visitor center which has since been covered in lava. We swam in the Queen's bath over by the black sands beach. That area has also gone under the lava with Kalapana gardens. Many changes over the years. 👋👱♀️🐈🐈🐈⬛🐾💕🇺🇲 Merry/Happy and a great 2025.🎉🎶
Yes…I am partaking of my Christmas lava. Sunrise over the caldera is spectacular. Kind of like the last Iceland eruption. I have been checking regularly and woke up this morning…what??? Nice surprise.
We were there between Christmas & New Year 2006. Even without an eruption it was pretty spectacular. I've recently been re-working my video material which has been posted on RUclips.
Merry Christmas and a huge thank you for all the valuable education you have given your viewers. USGS published a video early Monday and it was realy interesting to hear the scientist talk because, having followed your videos, I was able to understand what he said about different types of lavas. So you've had an impact on people.
Hey there Shawn, GREAT video and technical description of Pu'u O'o/Kilauea. I'm from Hawai'i as I think I've told you before (BTW, thanks for the book!) and I'm also a student of Hawai'i olelo (language) so I wanted to let you know how to correctly pronounce 'halemaumau'. First it actually means; 'house of the ma'u fern' which, of course can be found in the area. The name 'Halemaumau' is actually made up of 3 parts; 'Hale (house)' and 'mau' twice, ergo Hale Ma'u Ma'u! You've correctly pronounced 'hale' but Ma'u Ma'u needs a little work. Ma'u is actually made up of FOUR Hawai'ian olelo (meaning letters, ANOTHER description for 'olelo'). And since it includes an okina (what we see as an apostrophe between the 'ma' and the 'u', also called a 'glottal stop') the 'ma' is pronounced SEPARATELY from the 'u' which is what the okina is used for, ie, ma'u is pronounced 'mah ooh', with a distinct separation of the 'ma' and the 'u'. The emphasis is on the mah, so ma'u ma'u is pronounced MAH ooh MAH ooh, NOT mah OOH mah OOH! As in all Hawai'ian olelo, A=ah, E=eh, I=eeh, O=oh, U=ooh and are pronounced that way in all cases. Also, many claim 12 letters in Hawai'ian olelo, but there are actually 13; A, E, I, O U, K, L M, N, P, W, and 'the okina (apostrophe), as you probably know!! LOVE YOUR STUFF! I'm hoping you find the time to write a book on Kilauea/Hale Ma'u Ma'u/Pu'u Mo'o/Kaluapele and the lower pu'u, Pu'u O'o ~ ~ ~ Aloha ~ ~ ~

Thank you kindly and Happy holidays!
Love it! Did it on my birthday! Usually only do some shopping, but this year is different.
Happy birthday!
Just a few days off from when we got a similar eruption start in 2020. That one began 12/20/20. Kilauea likes giving Christmas shows.
WOW! Thanks for the great information. Hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday.

Thank you for sharing Shawn! Have an enjoyable Holiday!
Thanks! You too.
Seasons greetings and thank you for the last year of learning, thank you Shawn
You’re very welcome. We all learn together
We visited there two weeks ago on Tuesday. How cool to see the eruption where we stood gazing over the crater! Just wow!!!
Clearly the popularity of Moana 2 has motivated a show of acknowledgement from the volcano goddess herself. 😂
Thanks, Shawn!
That tree hanging on in spite of all Kilauea throws at it! Thank you for covering this eruption Shawn! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!
Thanks. Merry Christmas to you and yours, too!
Absolutely spectacular! Thank you Shawn - Merry Christmas everyone.
Thanks, Shawn,, it reminds me of my visit to this volcano a few years ago..
Thanks for all the hard work on these videos!

Neat that I looked at usgs latest earthquake map yesterday which showed seismic activity right there.
Thank You so much for your explanation of how our world works. It's much appreciated.
Wonderful…. Such a lovely gift 🎁
Wow! I’ll be glued to varied channels watching this!
I didn’t know I liked 🌋 this much until I watched this video. That was really cool

Aloha from Makaha...wow an eruption on one the Big Island, practically next door to me....
Enjoy it!
@@shawnwillsey if I didn't have doctor appointments to deal with, I'd fly over to see it....sigh
