Shawn, words can't express how much I appreciate you. Your students are truly blessed to have an instructor who explains things the way you do. I had the same kind of geology professor in college who inspired me the same way. Thank you for sharing yourself, your knowledge, and your passion for your field.
Thank you for the update. That back flow is crazy. On FB a poster that goes by EpicLava did a time lapse off the USGS feed. I guess the tub filled up and overflowed back down the vent. It is documented also during the Kilauea Iki eruption (HVERI video on RUclips).
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your family P. Shawn ,thanks for all the hard work through the year on the situation in Iceland ,thanks for explaining the wonderful world of volcanoes ,it has been a thrill ,best wishes for 2025 !
Your plumbing skills are in question now. How can we trust a geologist when he can only get a lava pump running for 2 days? 🙂 Question: if they declare a pause on Dec 25, is there a set time fter which they will delcare eruption to be over, or is there a more scientific evaluation based on inflation/seismicity/etc that cause them to declare eruption to be over? How does this decision making compare with the frequent lava flows in Iceland where they declare an eruption to be over as soon as laval stops flowing, even if they see inflation happening and know a new one will come "soon" ?
All your videos are so informative and so well explained. I’m always so grateful for your time and efforts. I look forward to your videos and always feel excited when you post something new! Thanks Shawn
Magma still moving beneath it but I say it's possible it may shift back to the east rift zone maybe since kiluaea has a history of having eruptions in both areas at the same time as well
It was erupting a tiny bit while you were making this video, you could see it on s2 cam and can also see the tiny flow on the main camera while you were making this

You are very welcome. Thanks for your kind words.
Happy Holidays to you and Erika and Mandie Jo and the other mods for all your hard work this year. 🎄🎄🎉🎉
Your videos have been the highlight of my year! Geology has been my thing since my senior year in high school.
Merry Christmas Shawn
The VOG is fairly intense over here on the Kohala coast
Thanks for the update!
Enjoy your holidays!
Thanks and enjoy your winter break!❤
Thank you, I will
Thanks for all the hard work on these videos!
To be fair. He’s only using footage that others have taken the time to take x
@susandavidson1691 he's also studied geology for most of his life.

Boil, boil, double and trouble. Volcano burns and caldera bubbles! Thanks for the update.
Amazing to see the size of that tephra.
Watching the drainage yesterday was so fascinating. I haven't seen a lot of volcano video but I've never seen that before.
@Shawn why was the lava running very quickly toward the wall by the tree at 13:20ish yesterday. Like it was draining somewhere?
That was the drainback when eruption paused and lava poured back down the vent.
Wow! I don’t remember ever seeing that over the years. Pretty cool.
Thank you Shawn.
I was wondering how long until there was a SW Hawai'i update! Now I know. Thanks.
TY for the update!
Drainback has not been witnessed, since 1959 Kilauea event. Caldera floor over flooded & drainback. Same again?
Merry Christmas and thanks for update
Scott was great to give us the views on Xmas day ❤❤❤❤

Thanks for another excellent update, Shawn! Reliable info as always, along with great maps and photos! Much appreciated. À bientôt ! :)
Good reporting, Shawn. Thanks so much.
Thank you, Shawn, merry Christmas to you and your family

Thanks for the update. I am wondering why the lava drains back down the vent? Very interesting and surreal to see. Thanks again and happy holidays.
Lowest point.
Thanks for answering my question! Learning new things, especially about our beautiful Earth is so much fun.

Merry Christmas. Would also like an update with the Iceland volcano when you can 😊
Hi Shawn
Thanks Shawn
