I appreciate the hard work that the USGS team does to gather and analyze data about what is happening, and how they provide it to the public through their webcams. They were woken up by this eruption in the middle of the night Hawaii time to get out and find out what was going on. I thank Ken Hon for giving this live information at 6 AM his time.
What a present/presence we get to witness from a safe and warm distance. Yes, mahalo nui NPS for making this available and to you Ken for your explanations!! Happy Holidays!!
In 1959, my parents, my family went to Kilauea military camp on the big island. We walked across Halemaumau crater, and received a little certificate stating we did so. Before the eruption, there were acres of Vanda orchid plants. My dad was a Marine Corps pilot, stationed out of Kaneohe on Oahu. When he would go to the big island, he would bring back hundreds of orchid flowers. 4 for 25 cents. He would bring them home and I would make leis. To think of how far science has progressed that you are able to provide live streaming pictures and information as it happens. I don’t know if anybody ever thought that would’ve been possible back then. It’s amazing thank you.
..i really don't think it was Halemaumau crater.....you would've needed a helicopter to get to the bottom of the crater....you must've walked on Kilauea crater, the larger crater in which Halemaumau sits....
@ I was not even a teenager…most likely you are correct. halemaumau is a crater within a crater. I certainly recall the smell of rotten eggs from the sulphur…and saw the steam…but now glowing rocks.
My wife and I we lucky enough to be on the big island when kiluea erupted in 2018 and we were able to view the eruption from the pathway from near the viewing point at which these seats are taken. It took a few days before they finally closed this area off completely. These videos are about as good as the observations get. We were very lucky to be there on the first day of the eruption on our trip and had a good visit.
Aloha 🤙 and thank you for the great information sir. I live 10 miles from the park and have a disabled pass since 2004. I have come countless times to unwind and learn and enjoy the power and energy that surrounds me here. I am currently parked in my Jeep with my dogs at the steam vents and enjoying a steaming here. The Volcano is quiet today, December 26, 2024 at 10 pm. God sent me here to be close to this wonder of nature no doubt in my 74 year old mind. Mucho Mahalo and hope to meet you some day to talkstory and geology and volcanology . Aloha 🤙
I need to see the beauty of nature before I move to the mainland, lived here 6 years and just worked everyday and haven't gotten to see this Goddess show her beauty
The water and sulfur gas explanation was so interesting. That's what makes the fountain. Wow. Greetings from Mexico. And the peanut butter bubbles and spaghetti sauce. As a professor, your examples help us to understand much better in a funny way. And the heavy blop of jello 😂
13:45 @USGS Can you provide a link to a paper describing the hydration mechanism(s) of the magma please. If possible, specifically for the volcanoes of Hawaii' .Thank you.
' wow big beautifully natural open eruption volcano and melty lava on the ground... keep continue eruption volcano melt lava on the ground until dec 2025... volcano melty lava on the ocean and grow little bigger size of island

I got one of those certificates also.. in 1963. It was an award known as “Pele’s Pooped Pedestrians”.

Hey, I think I was there. “Volcanology of the Hawaiian Islands”? He had a trip out to the lava fields, and only three of us showed up?
@ i remember that. I was at concert over on an Oahu and missed it. Aloha 🤙 this is so awesome

Woot! We get there Friday to visit my BF's brother in Papaikou. Pele' is MAD, and I understand why.
We went this morning to East Rim and the eruption was awesome to film.

Thank you for this
Thank you! This is amazing! I’ll be on the island in a couple weeks, what is the best/safest way for me to see in person?
Has the air quality been very bad on the island? I notice a little on Kaua'i earlier this week.
Bom dia feliz natal a todos abraços
An article I read said the earthquake near Hana the other day has no impact on Kilauea? Interesting
...amazing livestream...thank's for share...
Is there an elevation of the current lava lake surface?
Why are the dead trees near the vent not all burned up by the heat?
Nossa saber que constroem suas casas muito perto do vulcão 🌋 estou longe e tenho medo Silvia do Brasil feliz natal a todos
Can we go visit park today?
Just don’t get so close that you qualify for the Darwin awards 🫣😜
@Days End floor of the crater is about 1000 meters altitude.
at what point will the crater fill up with lava
The last eruption lasted 20+ years and the caldera never filled to the rim.
Beautiful!
will the caldera ever fill up completely?
I’ve asked, no one cares to answer….
Is the volcano wall strong enough to contain the lava without breaking through to the development Volcano>
Wow. Thank you for sharing
A present from Mme. Pele! 🎁
Mahalo Ken!
Seasons Greetings! 🌴🎄🥂
How close can visitors get to the caldera? I imagine Night viewing would be recommended?
Park rangers will tell you where to view safely. Reserve a table at Volcano House and def stay for night viewing!!
We were there a day before the eruption! Omg 🤪🌋
Big Mahalo!!!
Awesome video
Let's add to the discussion the role of solar activity on our planet and resulting earthquake/volcanic activity, can we?
Nature's Lava Lamp now active. Let the disco parties begin.
Just in site for Xmas Eve.

Try going ahead to 2:35. Hope that helps. 😎✌️
