    Bregman has cut down a lot of baserunners from third on plays like that over the years. He did so in the World Series and in ALCS games against the Yankees when the run he prevented eventually became the difference for the game. I've always felt the Astros' defense tends to be overlooked because their pitching and hitting were so good. Thank you for the analysis. Think about it, Bregman was the only one in their core infielders who has not won a Gold Glove.

    Great breakdown. When I was a kid I attended some baseball clinics put on by LSU. Amazing ball club. Bregman was playing this game like a chess piece understanding its place on the board. Each move is equally capable of changing the game entirely.

    Important there that the pitcher also goes to back up the catcher. He appears to be doing so here, but some pitchers just stand around. Otherwise, if teh runner changes direction fast enough Bregman may be chasing him home.

    Great breakdown of the fielder's decision-making!
    Then, the base running coach needs to make sure that his runner that is on third base knows better than to try to do that AUTOMATICALLY, and will instead have to determine whether or not the double play is likely enough to make getting home be the smart play or if not, to stay on third and give the next hitter a sacfly opportunity, which is, IMO, a tough split decision to make at times!

    Bregmans play or Renfroes catch? Who had the better opening day play?

  • @Mitten4371
    @Mitten4371 Год назад

    Yes and it also depends on the score of the game but Bregman knows that Andrus is a fast runner but this ball was hit too slowly for him to turn a double play. Plus look where his momentum is taking him because it would have been impossible to turn a double play. But I guarantee you that if this ball is hit on the ground like it was Andrus thinking is with his speed that he could beat that out and score. But like you said Bregman made a smart play and threw to home right away but he knows in a rundown that you can't be in the baseline without the ball in his hand because it would be Interference if he did. Your right Andrus job is to stay in the rundown as long as he can so the other runners could advance but Bregman just made a smart play

    If Andrus had run directly for the plate when Bregman got the ball, could he have gotten past the catcher before Bregman could throw to the catcher? In this play, he runs perpendicular to the line, and that doesn't seem helpful. If he'd just put all of his effort towards going home again, he would seem to have a better chance to escape the tag and maybe score.

    Pena would also need to pinch in if the runner got past Bregman. It's not correct to stand with your keyster over the base in a rundown. You need to read the play and pinch in as the other fielder is running the runner back so that you can execute a catch and tag like Bregman did..

    The logic you gave for the runner makes no sense. If he's going home 99% then it should be full speed. If he's reading the play to see if bregman goes to second, then he's too far off.
    Result he's in no man's land and makes decision easy for bregman and he's only running half speed means he has no chance at home. If the goal is to score then run or wait until throw goes to second. If goal is to get in rundown to try to load bases, then only go off far enough to draw through then return to third.
