Awesome breakdown! PLEASE do more of these, especially with multi-part infield plays like these, thanks!!
Will do!!
@@AntonelliBaseball But do it faster
As a good fielding fan, love it. As someone cheering for the White Sox, devastating play. What a good read.
Bregman has cut down a lot of baserunners from third on plays like that over the years. He did so in the World Series and in ALCS games against the Yankees when the run he prevented eventually became the difference for the game. I've always felt the Astros' defense tends to be overlooked because their pitching and hitting were so good. Thank you for the analysis. Think about it, Bregman was the only one in their core infielders who has not won a Gold Glove.
Great breakdown. When I was a kid I attended some baseball clinics put on by LSU. Amazing ball club. Bregman was playing this game like a chess piece understanding its place on the board. Each move is equally capable of changing the game entirely.
Important there that the pitcher also goes to back up the catcher. He appears to be doing so here, but some pitchers just stand around. Otherwise, if teh runner changes direction fast enough Bregman may be chasing him home.
Excellent analysis. Thank you for the insight - can’t get enough of this ‘inside baseball.’
My 10 year old loves watching your baseball IQ videos. I give him similar information on situational awareness during games but I’m just the dumb dad. Thanks for posting videos like this. Watching these with him seems to be changing his mind about MY baseball knowledge. 👍
The catcher adapted too and made a great throw.
Great breakdown man! I use a lot of your videos like this to share with my team and try to show them how situations can be different and what to think about as players.
Great stuff!!!
Matt excellent breakdown , thank you for sharing and detailing every steps .
Is not just going out there hitting and fielding but also the knowledge of the game is powerful
I always learn from your videos! TFS...this game has such depth.
Wow, I learned a ton of stuff from your breakdown. Thanks for sharing.
And now I'm imagining my little league team in the same situation.... A million variations of what might happen! 😅
Need more of these all season
Great explanation, Thank you!
My daughter plays third base. I'll be sure to share it with her. Even though we see this every night at home. We live in Houston. Good video nice breakdown.
Thanks and good luck to her!
Softball is very different from baseball in many ways-playing third base in baseball vs softball is certainly different in this regard.
This is why he's so valuable to the Astros. Even when the bat isn't at Bregman levels his defense is always on point.
Love breakdowns like this
Very nice analysis!
I suggest you do a video on the 2001 World Series in which a base running blunder by Yankees’ centerfield Bernie Williams cost the Yankees in game 7 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
He’s a smart and awesome player
And experienced in big moments
Piece of cake 💪🏼⚾️
Keep the breakdowns coming.
Nice breakdown Matt!
Bregman, an LSU alum has always been a fav!
Astros were one of the first teams to use the offensive rundown delay to advance runners. In the same situation they normally have the other runners on 2nd and 3rd after tag. Bregman just figured out a way to sabotage that tactic.
Good play by Maldy, getting the ball back to Breggy quickly.
Even I didn’t notice this and I was at the game! Great breakdown
That's the awesome thing about these athletes. They make 'complicated' things look so easy and routine that you really don't even notice how non-routine it really is.
My favorite thing to do at 2nd base was catch short hops 🤣 we all use to even, practice catching short hops by having someone throw short hops to you. Catching them on the attack in a game always made me feel like a bad azz 🤣. It makes you look like you're either really good or really lucky at the teenager levels lol. Hilariously, I can see my bad azz Easton infielders glove that I've had since high school from where I'm sitting 😁
Like he said, it happened instantly, way less than a second. I love infield plays.
You should break down the Adrian Beltre charging Bunt play of the game five against Toronto where Toronto had that crazy inning where Bautista hit a three run jack with the bat flip, in that inning he had a really cool play were a charge to bunt by Ryan goins
Great breakdown of the fielder's decision-making!
Then, the base running coach needs to make sure that his runner that is on third base knows better than to try to do that AUTOMATICALLY, and will instead have to determine whether or not the double play is likely enough to make getting home be the smart play or if not, to stay on third and give the next hitter a sacfly opportunity, which is, IMO, a tough split decision to make at times!
Nice breakdown. U have some phrasing that sounds like the late great Vin Scully
8+ minute commercial for the Astro's 3B. We got it in the first minute...play on
Let's also not forget to mention the homeplate umpire getting the bat out of the way.
Can You look at many machado ejection
Brilliant on-field thinking cannot be over-stated.....
its taken a long time but Bregman is going to finally win a gold glove
I got it in the first minute!
It's like listening to grandpa telling a story from the olden days . It's a 5:00 video at best
"Don't be a robot". If you know what I mean. Great play illustrating this by Bregman.
Can you break down Adley Rutchman's slide (or crash?) into second base that conked Christian Arroyo in the head?
Perfect Breakdown....so please Explain the Derek Jeter Backhand flip from the First base line.....how is that even coached, if ever?
It is not coached-just a great player making a great play.
You didn't mention the inning or the score. If it's late in the game 7th inning or later and you're behind by a run. give them the 6-4-3 double play and score the tying run.
That grass looks like a damn green-screen🐸
Thanks howard stern
Ha! Now I can’t un-hear it.
Good work, though did the runner make it to second base? ;-)
Well the runner was at 1st to start the play. Since the hitter made it to 1st, the runner obviously had to advance to second.
Bregman's play ensured the runner didn't make it to 3rd and the hitter didn't make it to 2nd.
Bregmans play or Renfroes catch? Who had the better opening day play?
Renfro's catch easily
Renfroe... and it's not even close.
Yes and it also depends on the score of the game but Bregman knows that Andrus is a fast runner but this ball was hit too slowly for him to turn a double play. Plus look where his momentum is taking him because it would have been impossible to turn a double play. But I guarantee you that if this ball is hit on the ground like it was Andrus thinking is with his speed that he could beat that out and score. But like you said Bregman made a smart play and threw to home right away but he knows in a rundown that you can't be in the baseline without the ball in his hand because it would be Interference if he did. Your right Andrus job is to stay in the rundown as long as he can so the other runners could advance but Bregman just made a smart play
But that bat kick by the ump!
I just realized you sound a lot like Howard Stern. lol. It's like if Howard were a baseball expert. Anyway, great breakdown.
A lot of people say that lol. Thanks!!
If Andrus had run directly for the plate when Bregman got the ball, could he have gotten past the catcher before Bregman could throw to the catcher? In this play, he runs perpendicular to the line, and that doesn't seem helpful. If he'd just put all of his effort towards going home again, he would seem to have a better chance to escape the tag and maybe score.
He also knew the shortstop was positioned toward 2nd base and the SS may not have been able to cover 3rd base in time.
Good reaction from the umpire kicking the bat away. Let's give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar...
The pitcher should be backing up the catcher so Bregman could remain there in the middle. That, and the catcher is still home
Pena would also need to pinch in if the runner got past Bregman. It's not correct to stand with your keyster over the base in a rundown. You need to read the play and pinch in as the other fielder is running the runner back so that you can execute a catch and tag like Bregman did..
Matt Smartenelli
I noticed that Andrews didn't go inside in fair territory in order to try to get in the way of the throw to home, unlike the runner in that similar situation I saw you break down.
Doesn't the base runner need to stay inside the "running lane" in order to prevent something like that?
@@paulyC Only on his way to first base.
Bregman could also see the pitcher was coming home to cover the plate
What about the fact that Andrus had no secondary lead and poor reaction?
Do you think if Bregman sees him further down the line, he goes to 1st?
You're giving him way too much credit I always wanted to do this at the high school level but I was an outfielder. So never got a chance to be involved but I always thought it was weird that everyone stands at the base instead of shortening the throw thus shortening the throws and the run down especially if the fielder is standing right next to the runner.
Wait, what did Bergman do?
You don’t think the runner should’ve stayed at third and the only play they would’ve had was at first because the ball was softly hit? They would’ve had a player on second and third with one out.
This is the more fundamental issue with the play. What the hell is the runner on third doing???!!! This was a simple, basic baseball play.
In reality the base runner at third should know that unless there’s a contact play on, you never break for home on a grounder to 3rd or pitcher. No different than if Derek e chose to play corners or all INF in to cut him down
does anyone else feel like most of the action in baseball happens while there are 2 outs? It would be interesting to see this as a statistic or investigate with a video 🧐
A
Could have been said in 3 minutes. Nice job by the umpire, getting the bat out of the way.
I've always had an extremely high baseball iq so all of this is exactly what I would've done. Good to know I read it right. 👌This is exactly how I was taught to play out this situation on both sides 👍

Seems this is the type of play you'd make in a video game, but it's coached out of you IRL.
Yes. But if he drops it, the run scores.
That’s why they’re major leaguers.
The logic you gave for the runner makes no sense. If he's going home 99% then it should be full speed. If he's reading the play to see if bregman goes to second, then he's too far off.
Result he's in no man's land and makes decision easy for bregman and he's only running half speed means he has no chance at home. If the goal is to score then run or wait until throw goes to second. If goal is to get in rundown to try to load bases, then only go off far enough to draw through then return to third.

Love the take, but this could have been a 2- to 3-minute video.
Bregman does not get a chance to do this if runner on 3rd makes a better read. If runner does not break for home I imagine the only play would be to 1st. 2nd and 3rd 1 out.
Hi IQ, indeed.
Could have been said in 2 mins.
My team would have overthrown the catcher and all 3 runners would score
what do you think of the new union with the minor leagues and the raises they received, list the stupid mlb fielders. make a video on how players have no idea how to tag out players. players try and tag the player in stead of putting their mitt on the base and letting the runner slide into it.
Kinda stupid though, was anyone else backing up home plate incase he couldn't run him down?
Regular/Routine baseball play...??? What is the big deal?
In my opinion the runner on third should have stayed. No way a double play can be executed therefore the batter is out and you achieve runners on 2nd and 3rd. To me, poor base running skills and I too am a Sox fan.
Crazy how talented the astros are, yet they still had to cheat 🤷♂️
God, could have said that in 30 seconds. Wasted movements...i would bench you. That play was just cut off by me.
A painfully protracted explanation of a smart baseball play. Could have been thoroughly yet crisply explained in 2 min.
I’m sorry to waste your time
This is basic baseball. Everyone knows this.
I don’t think it’s that deep. There was nothing crazy special. He threw home and was close enough to get back in the run down.
This lol, and he just wanted to try and get the out, I dont think it was heads up or smart per se.
No rocket science here.
Not rocket science, but nice play
Get to the point
a two minute story... took 8 minutes... likes to hear himself...
Way to go cheater
Why are you rooting on your relationship in here?
Uhh. These are professionals, they had better know how to make plays like that---it's nothing special. Now if these were Little League players, I could understand the reasoning behind the post. Sorry.
You talk way too much. You didn’t even show the whole play before you started your dissertation. Poor commentary too.
Great play, but come on Matt! These guys are getting paid millions to do this...they better get it right!
Super dumb base running by andrus. He is charging the ball. All of his momentum is heading towards home plate. It’s easier to throw home than to try to throw to 2b.
I disagree. Antonelli literally discusses why Andrus went. He either scores, or prevents the double play.
It's a smart run. He isn't a psychic and did what he was supposed to do. As for "momentum" yeah that's how you run. Leaning forward. Duh
@@jaredwright1655 sounds like you would have been thrown out also since you don’t understand what an easy play is lol
He's also good because he was told what pitches were being thrown. And when he wasn't his OPS dropped .200 points.
That has everything to do with his defensive play. 🙄
Nice breakdown. I’ll make a suggestion though - I don’t think you are giving your audience enough credit (you’re very repetitive). Try doing this one again in half the amount of time - when you watch it, I’ll bet that you won’t feel like you left anything significant out.
geez man, you're mansplaining this play to people who already know this stuff. come on man.
Not everyone has as high a baseball IQ as you
How many times can you repeat yourself? You are no Jomboy. Give it up.
Coming from an neophyte troller.
