  • We had met two other couples overlanding earlier in Georgia. We did this hike together. The start-point of this trail was not that far a drive from the visitor’s centre at the Black Grouse waterfall trail. This trail runs so close to the border that aside from registering at the visitor centre, you need to bring your passport as there is a military checkpoint on the trail where they also register you (and radio ahead that there are tourists in the area). This trail really gives you the feeling of an enchanted fairy tale forest. Absolutely beautiful. The castle itself is not much more than a ruin. Nonetheless it was a stunning 14km hike with some 300m up and down. Again a lot of water on the track and it started raining again just as we were back at the truck. We decided to go back to the visitor’s centre and camp there. Vashlovani National Park will have to wait (again), as it needs to be dry to enter.
