I work at The Coin Jam, an arcade in Salem, OR. Bill still comes in every now and then just to reclaim the top spot on our Missile Command cabinet. He's a great guy and super supportive of other gamers too. I was going for the Krull world record at one time and he stopped what he was doing to come cheer me on as I got close.
One of the best documentaries for gamers ever definitely worth watching. Update: bill did try again to get a higher score sometime after the filming of this documentary. He has yet to beat Missile Command’s Highest Score. As of 2022 Bill Carton is in 5th place . Beginning on March 15, 2013, Victor Sandberg of Sweden scored 81,796,035 points live on Twitch after 56 hours of play. On December 27 of the same year, Sandberg started a 71-hour and 41 minute game with a score of 103,809,990-10 points short of getting an additional 176 cities.
I watched Insert Coin and really enjoyed it. I started looking for other documentaries on gaming and I thought I had seen all of them. King of Kong, Chasing Ghosts all of them from that 2005-2008 era. Somehow, up until 2023, I missed High Score. I wish there were more to watch on these marathon gamers. Bill Carlton is an interesting guy. His other appearances on RUclips from gaming conventions are interesting as well. He's just like he is in the doc. What it takes to accomplish this kind of record is insane.
They should do a follow-up video in the next year or two on where are these guys now twenty years later . Still at it on these aging machines,or did they eventually throw in the towel?
Robert Mruczek is the only judge I would want to verify my scores. He has always proven himself the only referee that cannot be questioned for his judgement.

@@Dessan01 style of playing would play a role. Even if they weren’t aware as long as they lose and regain cities enough it wouldn’t crash. It’s when you build to many up the chance of crashing machine increases.
@@sideburn Yeah understand that 🙂 on the other hand it’s not that complicated a game in terms of strategy - you aren’t telling me in 9 other people on the score board, not a single other one decided to hoard extra city’s and so didn’t run into the problem.
@@Dessan01 just telling you what I’ve read or heard in the past. I think there’s a discussion about it on a forum somewhere. Maybe atariage. I just remember the mystery finally being solved and I think it had something to do with reserve cities being built up too much.
You guys are about to figure out that I don’t know what I’m actually talking about here, but there’s a few things that confuse me. The fact that the game keeps shutting down could really be anything. For example, static electricity, if he is wearing slippers, running back-and-forth to the bathroom maybe he’s building up a charge at some point and zapping the game. But I was mainly thinking it has to do with heat. Those circuit boards should work really well if they are kept at very cold temperatures. I know the Consol has port holes were air can get through it and I am assuming that there are fans inside. But I would think if an air conditioning system was hooked up with some type of tube that could run straight into the machine and then come out the other end it would stay cold and work better. Also understand though the machine would not work if you have condensation building up inside, so some type of drying unit would have to be incorporated. Once again, I do not know how to do any of this, but I would think that heat has a lot to do with it shutting down because of the randomness of when it happens. It might happen at 10 million points 12 million points 30 million points. It doesn’t happen at the same moment every time which makes me think this randomness has to do with heat. I really enjoyed this movie and the skating at the end was awesome like the 80’s. Piece out, everyone.

Allegedly the way Victor Ali did it was the same way the various people claiming 12 million on pacman or similar did it - they added up all their scores from each run and submitted that. That's what multiple ex-TG staff have said when asked about ludicrous early 80s scores. Walter didn't have set rules, he was just collecting scores from all over in that era. Later when it became more formalised, he should have removed them but as we know TG was corrupt and inept and so only removed the "important" ones, like the ludcrious pacman they briefly recognised.

I think when you hit 255 cities (6 on screen + 249 spare), earning one more sets the counter to 0 and the game resets.
