People commonly refer to the video game crash of 1983 as something that nearly killed games before being rescued by Nintendo. This is a misnomer. The home console market crashed, but not home computers. Gaming on the various home computers that were around at the time didn’t suffer. Gaming on a computer back then was way nerdier and less accessible than it is now, so the people that played games on computers were dedicated enough to not take a huge hit, unlike your casual home console player.
DeadHeroOrAliveVillain 1019 Nintendo was cool when they were an arcade game maker now all they can do is sell us a game from 25 30 years ago or just a new adavance mario game nothing new even tennis games or baseball games are about mario games Nintendo should make a console with no mario or zelda games to see how that does.
@@Victoria3232-j7o Er... things like Super Mario Odyssey aren't the same game from 25 or 30 years ago, and it isn't just graphics. Sure, it contains the same character, but that doesn't make it the same game. It only makes it a "Mario" game. And making a new console without their best-selling characters and franchises would just be setting them up for failure.... I know it's from four years ago, but still felt like replying.
Well-edited & well-produced documentary series, which is largely positive about video games & the video games industry (well, at least THIS episode is).

Ah, This was when gamers where gamers, and were not categorizes by what platform we play on.We may use different platforms(ps4,xbox one,PC,etc.) ,but we all have one purpose.... TO PLAY GAMES!
The truth is - they're all just computers underneath. Games are fun and benign things... we as humans just insist on making our pastimes and hobbies into another bloodthirsty drive to be better than the rest.
ET wasn't that bad at time of release. It certainly hasn't aged well, which will color modern players' opinions. But, overall, it was somewhere between average to sub-par. It was Atari spending millions on licensing and advertizing, as well as over-producing carts that lead to the financial disaster. Also, that landfill was the resting place to more than just ET- even good games, like Phoenix and Defender were dumped there, along with Atari computers. They cleared out a warehouse when corporate shipped jobs overseas. There was no coverup, what was found at the landfill only confirmed Atari's official 1984 story.
How did the creator of JFK Reloaded, get on here?! 11:50 It's considered one of the worst video games ever made it's basically a simulation of the JFK assassination with you as the sniper !?
im sorry but why did they put even a small clip of sonic 06? its complete garbage please tell me who's decision that was so i can tell them how wrong they are
+Justin McLellan I dont know I enjoy NBA 2k16 quite alot, and I rarely buy sports titles but besides thats personal opinion and personally I cant stand the whole nostalgia argument nostalgia=like a drug, keeps you from forgetting all the SHIT that was being released back then...and I've been a gamer for 27 years, I embrace nostalgia, and retrovania along with modern games cause I'm not one of those "oh I can only play classic games, or they are so much better" no...sorry 1992 might have been a great golden era for the time 16-bit era, blah blah - but I would much prefer MGS V over Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Secret of The ooze, lol or Super Meat Boy over any previous platformer for 25 years ago, theres tons of great games I grew upon, loads of classics dont get me wrong...across all platforms/devices but...I cant go back to those older titles and enjoy them quite the same, nostalgia doesnt work like that for me...plus knowing what I know now, with the advances in science (and tech in general) I can't seem to shake the idea when I play a title from a previous generation (especially many years ago) how "limited" it is..fun or not, challenging or not, too often too many people put emphasis on "oh those older titles were so challenging" yea but...thats only 1/10th of what makes a game great, again thats taste/opinion but..now as for the other topic in terms of video game industry crashing I highly doubt that would happen (and even if it did, it would rebound much quicker in terms of rapid succession) I mean really if you are comparing 2016 (even WITH the economy the way it is) it wouldn't be quite the same as it was in 1983 when the video game crash occurred (which was a combination of several things) including the stock market what was a market cap of 3 billion in 1983, plummeted to less then 100 million and the effects weren't felt until 1985, but the point is EVEN if the market is saturated with fakes, remakes, yearly releases of incremental value, etc - even IF the industry plummeted it wouldnt be quite as damaging as it would of been 32 years ago, simply because of the industrys market cap now is well above 40 billion, even if the industry broke in two and split...we'd see a market cap of 20-25 billion (and were not even talking about the idea of new money being infused with VR-gaming, handheld gaming, or I should rephrase and call it mobile gaming) w/ wi-fi everywhere, and a new type of OS-script based games, and more platforms/devices then ever (and gaming merging into industries/areas it never has before) I highly doubt we would see the fall or such a devastating impact on the gaming industry as was before...not to say any industry can take loss, and be effected we all know that I'm not naive but I also realize even taking a look at the 118 year automobile industry, putting aside the fact of WHY or how it began to falter (the death of modern industrialism, etc) and also putting aside what humans need for transportation - the industry falters, waivers but never falls completely undertoe...it rebounds, as 99% of all industries do...market cap changes, profits waiver, quarterly revenues bounce but it never truely goes away we can revisit this issue in 2020 and in 4 more years we will probably be having this same very discussion with very little changes (if only a BIGGER market cap) game industry is (and has always been) directly tied to technology/software/modern day computing age/hardware tech, with PC gaming, handheld/mobile gaming, console gaming, VR-gaming machines, DIY/indie developers, more "funding" options then ever before, and a larger and larger market cap by the year I don't see that changing anytime soon (and besides none of us live forever) and theres plenty of content out there, dont like something ? or a specific development team ? or producer ? then don't buy the software, or dont read the review lol - I'm not much of a fan of EA either but every now and then a truely decent title comes out w/ good reviews that I actually take an interest in an' enjoy seems to me nowadays its all about negativity/pessimism - bitching and moaning about one thing or another, and 99% of the time when I buy a title, launch it (either on a console or PC, cause i have a wide variety of devices/platforms I game on) I find the arguments, debates/bitching n moaning was baseless like...I look around (birds chirping) what was everyone complaining about ? this game didnt run well, devs and their un-finished material, release in DLC over a period of time, this crap, that crap - lol I end up buying the title few months down the road, playing it (1 game at a time) enjoying it, for what its worth and either returning for a % or keeping...and then onto the next title...I enjoy gaming, its not my only hobby but one of my biggest...I have a small apartment, job - and a few hobbies and a few of my closest friends/family enjoy gaming as well (not all) but some...way I look at it, theres good and bad in every hobby/industry/passion and really when it comes down to it whats "crap" is really subjective, merely opinion, I guess I'm just easy to please cause whenever I read a review (on a site like polygon or gamespot, or IGN) you will naturally scroll down to the feed/comments section and see rows and rows of comments that fall along the line of criticism (and not constructive just for the sake of bitching) arguments, insults, random senseless debates...and I often wonder "its not so much the GAMING INDUSTRY as much as it is GAMING CULTURE thats negative, I find 99% of the time I fault the gamers, the sad-sappy-always negative bitching gamers, cant please them no matter what, a game could be truely remarkable - runs well smooth - perfect experience in everyway and with alittle something for everyone, a game that is genre-defining and cross's borders...yet you'd still get loads of bitching and moaning (I find thats the only way I can phrase it) so pardon the phrasing but...thats exactly what it is...its gonna die, this game sucks, this will die, this will falter, this wont succeed, it looks bad, this is crap lol...why even play anything (or read, or watch tv/film, card games, etc) cause it seems w/ any arts & entertainment all ppl want to do is bitch about it...you get the every now and then person like me who see's it from both sides, the good and the bad, pros/cons - but still gets whatever enjoyment I cant out of whatever title...but thats me, thank god I feel this way about things...a level-head when it comes to most things.sorry for the run-on story I got alittle off-topic lol to say the least but it falls in life with what you mentioned you mentioned so little but said so much.
Michael Stillwell THANK YOU. The gaming community right now is becoming highly corrupt. Without boundaries everyone can say all the stupid shit they want. It's not right. The corruption of the gamer is becoming more higher every day and I defend the god damn video game industry because I'm not stupid. Times change and people hate change so thats why they bitch about it. They can't let go of the fucking past because they're just a bunch of assholes who love to hate. I never trust Steam Reviews due to the overwhelming corruption and hatred going on. It's Pay 2 Win this or fuck you this. WELL GUESS WHAT ITS CALLED FREEMIUM AND THEY HAVE FAMILIES THEY GOTTA FEED! I am serious l am thinking about quitting gaming once and for all but my main goal in life is to become a developer and show what the hell is wrong with people nowadays. I want world peace but these assholes are getting in the way of it. Why the hell do we need to be so fucking negative all the fucking time for fucks sake its fucking not fucking OK JESUS FUCKING CHRIST! I can't voice my opinion without getting death threats and this is just bullshit. To those assholes who are reading this villianizing video game companies and developers and publishers, STOP THE HATE. LEARN TO LOVE YOU SON OF A BITCH.
Johnny Sack after Nolan Bushnell left yes they did they didnt give game makers royalties and they left to make Activision and Atari did make good games until those best game makers from Atari left
Warning: this documentary is WONDERFUL and interesting... until part 3 that is..... The problem with this documentary is that it cherry picks, it doesn't go in chronological order anymore during 3 or cover any other systems. That bothers me. it specifically picks and chooses specific few genre's and doesn't cover any others or the systems anymore..... quite sad. I just skipped through 3-5 and cherry picked myself because it was just repeating it's self over and over just showing a few games only.
Mark Anthony Nintendo was cool when they made arcade games now they can't make a new game that doesn't involve Mario or zelda or Pokemon or they just become lazy and sell us games from 25 to 30 years ago i and most people already bought.
13:21 That's wrong. Just because video games ended up coming from military resources doesn't mean that it could always have been that way. In all likelihood the surplus of money *_spent_* on the military was the determining factor that led to the development of games. If those funds were given to a different organization that used computing technology, such advancements would've been just as likely to develop. The idea that we should thank the military for video games is propaganda. Don't buy it.

I love this documentary, especially Steve Russell. "I unleashed the curse of video games upon the world!" That's awesome!
I'm 15 minutes in and this is way better than "video game: the movie". In content and in factuality.
did you finish all 5?
fuk you I don't remember, but I think I did. I think it has a downward slope, but it's still better than the movie. did you?
rezneba101 yourre right about the downward slope lol yeahi have thats why i was wondering if you thought it was still as good by the 5th one

Words as wise as those involving video games will never be said from a kid's mouth ever again. Respect.

Alexei ROCKS. For anyone interested in Tetris, I suggest you watch Gaming Historian's documentary.
Spoiler alert: It will make you cry.

Its quite amazing how the video game industry today is slowly repeating history.
+WatcherMovie008 It isn't only the video game industry, we're bad at learning from our mistakes in general.
i'd like to think i'd be cool enough to hustle a dude to play pong back in the day.

i'm still playing Tetris on the gameboy, none of the other games though.

Ralph Baer a "Thomas Edison" of video game industry?!?
A Nikola Tesla more bloody likely.
They could have said either one and it would still have the same impact. Edison and Tesla were both great inventors.
IronCobraDestroyer
better bone up on your history....especially on Edison..
+TikiShootah Edison was a fucking lame theif

Tetris could cure that, though.
