    grew up on VHS here, gen x kid from the 80s still have 4 vcrs and tons of blank new vhs tapes, plenty of recorded shows, movies, music videos all on vhs tape, had a “black” cable box back in the day, and video rental stores helped us for entertainment on a tight budget, and you can re watch whatever you like, get a vcr newbies and there are plenty of movie, music and tv vhs tapes out there, explore, learn and enjoy

      Yes, nostalgia is such a huge reason so many people are buying and watching VHS tapes. There's something soothing about the sounds it makes inside the VCR.

    The physical touch of the VHS tape, audio Cassette, vinyl record brings back memories. Sure family gives me crap about still having VHS and DVD's and Audio Cassettes and records with a record player but as i tell them, this is the stuff WE were raised on and i want to keep physical memories of them ...

I've been using them for years, when I was a kid my family didn't have cable, so my great grandpa would record our favorite shows to vhs tapes for us since he had cable. Cassette tapes and vhs tapes are certainly not better than their digital counterparts in terms of quality, and though I do pay for spotify and use streaming services, vhs and cassettes are just a lot more fun and enjoyable personally. Same here buddy, in Australia we have the salvos, same thing different name basically and the same reason towards not selling videos, “too obsolete for any sales” but you can tend to find some im not joking you between books in the book section, that’s happened to me a couple times when a young employee I guess confuses a tape cover for a book they shove it in there.
      Honestly your best bet can be eBay, but if you’re more privy to physical purchasing try these:
      Vintage stores/record stores, I went to one last night and they had more than just vinyl, every vhs you could think of and a few different players, LD in there too!
      I’m not sure if they have these in America but libraries here have a old media stock box which the public can take what they please out of, found a mint 1979 copy of grease for free there
      And honestly just walk around and see if any people have piled old stuff they don’t want outside their house and check there

    I just can not understand this. My local library gives away VHS tapes as they are donated regularly. Thrift stores have them for .10-.50. I see them for free-50 cents at garage sales all the time. I just can not understand why anyone would actually want them. I have not bought a movie of any kind for around 12 years. I have not owned a VHS player for at least 17 years. When I want to watch a movie that I own (one of about 20 I just don't want to throw away) I dont go get the dvd I just stream it online. @St Pat….Laserdisc fans dealt with this. Most would just zoom-in on Letterbox or Widescreen LD movies to fill the screen. Same would be done for WS VHS movies. @@DKN808 Of course to do that, one has to find a letterbox VHS tape, and there aren't many. There are many open matte VHS tapes, they don't show the intended aspect ratio.

      Widescreen VHS WAS made for widescreen TV's 16:9 ratio. Even streaming today's movies in widescreen, they have the black box on top and bottom.
      I have Star Wars in regular and widescreen.
      The regular has more top and bottom picture while the sides are cut off.
      The widescreen has less top and bottom but the sides have more picture.
      On one specific screen where Darth Vader is speaking, you cannot see the guard on his side when in full screen but when you watch that same scene in widescreen, you can see the guard next to him.
      I was raised on full screen and when widescreen came out, i HATED those top and lower black bars. Even on my 60 inch widescreen TV, todays movies still have those black bars.
      I have grown to like the widescreen and prefer it now.

    The issue with VHS is that they degrade. The tape wears out, breaks, the magnetic coating wears off, rendering the plastic useless, the magnetic recordings degrade, etc.
    Given absolutely no new tapes at all are being made, this won't last, sadly.

    • @510Books
      @510Books  2 года назад +8

      Yes, they do degrade but there were so many VHS tapes made and sold in the 1980s-2000s that there is a tremendous supply. I have a hunch that this VHS resurgence is going to propel some people to start releasing new VHS tapes. We'll see.

    • @992turbos
      @992turbos 2 года назад +1

      Not if they’re kept out of heat and away from moisture/humidity. I have a LOT of the earliest releases of tapes from 1978 and 1979, and they all play flawlessly, actually a lot better than the tapes made more recently. The older tapes were certainly made with better quality tape stock. Quality all around was better, those early heavier cassettes are like bricks. But they only degrade if you don’t take care of them, like anything else. Also, I have a Tapechek machine, which restores tapes back to their original condition. Retensions the reel back to factory tension (that loosens over time), scrapes the dirt/debris off the reel with a sapphire crystal, rubs additional dirt off with a cloth. Ive had tapes with dropouts, excessive lines, audio and tracking issues, play like brand new after one pass through the machine. So, its not like every vhs tape is doomed. It all depends on how you take care of your stuff.
