- Dyeing the not so good UCP pattern to a more effective color for a Spring/Summer woodland environment.
I was inspired by Bruce over at Bruce@CampArmament to dye my UCP 3 day Assault Pack. I think it came out pretty damn good, and certainly 100x better than the regular UCP pattern, blends in much much better. I will be doing a uniform set soon.
Check Bruce out here

I like the UCP dew to the fact it spent 20 yrs in combat so it needs to be recognized for that.
As a hunting camouflage I believe deer are color blind may someone can answer that.
As for a humans are concerned they blend in with just about nothing.
I do enjoy these dying videos and this color looks really nice.
US military will bite their own ass when they see this.
Millions of Dollars for science to get the best camoflage and a "applegreen" is the entire goal.
I saw other videos like that and it is awesome how the green with the UCP are melting together in a outdoor situation.
I like that so much, i will get some applegreen ink from USA and make my own new UCP camo too.
Thanks for that clip, likes up and have a nice time.
Vadim Wolk Lol yeah. They’ve already dumped this camo pattern for the multicam/ocp pattern. But dyeing it sure made it look better, and made it more effective. Looks similar to Russian digital flora camo pattern.
@@SurvivorMetalMan thats right. I was so impressed to see how effektive it works in deep woods and open fields with gras.
My son had seen that yesterday and would get it for his airsoft gear.
So i think i had to plan a Dad&son day with project "apple green" 😉
And we should go to the next army shops to see what they get on cheap UCP stuff.
Problem is that it doe nothing for the NIR which the dye removes and also the bug repellent--although you can reapply that
Tbf they wanted it to blend into every environment but chose the urban camo they were testing to be the basis of that, dumb. This green is good for this guys environment but prob won't be as good in Afghanistan or wherever else that's more deserty. Big Army realized they actually had the patent to ocp which is basically .9 version of multicam and smartly used that instead to avoid paying fees to crye lol.
If you use the RIT DyeMore dye for synthetic materials, it works much better. I dyed a couple assault packs black and they look great. The dye is specifically for synthetics so they work really well on the bags and even the plastic hardware (to a degree).
Hello. I'm from Ukraine. I also want to paint my assault backpack in black. Can I have a photo of your repainted backpack? thanks!
@@ОлександрПомалейко Just use Rit DyeMore for Synthetics
@@ОлександрПомалейкоhow's that going over there? ; ))))
That came out awesome, thanks for sharing this video.
I've dyed several MOLLE packs and the apple green is the most pleasing to the eye. I like how the underlying pattern shows through but you still get variable 'greenness' overall. It's a bit bright for fall or winter but it blends quite well in spring and summer here (Michigan). Good job.
Billofthenorth1 thanks my friend, and I agree, it does look good, and blends well. Thinking of doing one with some kind of tan for fall/winter.
@@SurvivorMetalMan I did one with dark brown for fall/winter though I only used half a bottle. of dye It came out ok but the color isn't as appealing as the green.
Wow. That looks awesome! It looks like Canadian CADPAT now. I'm doing this.
Thanks for the mention! Yeah this turned out great, way better then I would have expected. Good job!
Bruce@CampArmament thanks brother, and thanks for the information on how to do it. It turned out good, and certainly better than it was. Uniforms are next! Thanks again!
Be careful where you sit that bag down in the woods! You might just have a hard time finding the sucker! Great job on the new camo! Peace, Bob W
Bobby Winchester lol, thanks my friend, I like it, certainly better than it was.
Thats right. When there no US sign on the front it is pretty hard to see the backpack in deep vegetation.
Great job.
I tried it with brown and looks great!
I watched Bruce's video myself and followed his instructions. I did 2 sets of ACUs and a few covers using the Rit Apple Green dye. I discovered that you could get a dark or light shading by adjusting the amount of vinegar and salt. If you want a lighter shade, reduce the amount Bruce specified. So, depending on where you live, you should be able to dye you gear and uniforms to a shade that will work with the vegetation near you.
Awesome tip!
I like the fact that you can still see the camouflage pattern for the break up ❤
Cadpat is impossible to get. This "solution" is a no brainer. Bruce is a damn genius.
@@RHampton yes, he is!
I once saw pictures on the Net from an US. Army combat vet serving in Afghanistan who dyed his UCP tan. It looked amazing in that environment. Of course, he was reprimanded by his superiors and not allowed to use it. Hopefully, the Army has it right with the OCP pattern? Anyway, great video. Thanks.
As of today MC (multicam) is now the US standard.
Sweeeeeeeeetttt! I've got tons of that Ugly Crappy Pattern on Pouches and Bags that are pretty much useless up by me in Ohio. I checked out Bruce's Video, and we have similar Environmental Terrain. Guess I have a chore to do soon! Thanks again for the Video and I WILL be Staying Heavy!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Leslie Kovacs it looks really good, and it certainly will work better in a woodland environment for sure, do it!
@@SurvivorMetalMan You got it!👍
Amazing how much more effective UCP could have been if they just sucked it up and distributed dye packs, a brown shade or green shade, or even a black shade could have saved a lot of lives.
when you have a hard time finding your gear in the bush, then the camo works.👍
4:15 that is one fine clothing submersion device
Have you heard about using coffee?
I thought about dying it with ritt like everyone else and THEN doing it with coffee to try to get a dark green/more brown back into it
A very highly tuned precision instrument and tool, very rare. 😂
And yes, I’ve heard of dying with coffee, it seems it turns out very well.
@@SurvivorMetalMan Yeah im just curious what the combo could do. The ritt seems to get it to an almost multicam tropic color spectrum - and im wondering if coffee could bring it back to a regular multicam spectrum
That looks great. Several times I have wanted to change the color of clothes and gear and didn't know it was that easy and would look so good. Thanks for showing us.
LoaferX it was easier than I thought, if I would’ve known earlier, I would’ve done this along time ago.
I’m In AZ and this dye pattern works surprisingly well in a desert environment
Very nice, my friend! That is indeed an excellent solution for this useless camo pattern!
Thanks brother, it’s definitely a lot better than it was before.
Hell yeah brother 🇺🇸
Big improvement.
I need to do the same thing.
Thanks for sharing brother 🇺🇸
I freaking love it looks great brother
1/4 cup of Apple green, 1/4 pearl grey, 1/4 cup dark green makes OLIVE GREEN (3 gallons)
Thanks
Howdy from Tulsa, we ought to go ruck somtime, bless ya
I got on Rits website and used the OD Green formula for my gear. It came out a little to dark. I am going to have to use some spray paint to give it some lighter colors here and there. Next time I do a dye bath I am going to have to try the Apple Green color.
Swamp Fox yep, the apple green is the best I’ve seen for dyeing gear. It really blends very well.
Nice! I need to do that to my A.L.I.C.E. pack! Thanks for sharing brother 👍
Jamie Michael Outdoors thanks my friend!
i can bet using this dye on the US Airbonre digutal pattern might create an exceptional pattern
Wow! Much better color. Cool how you can manipulate the color to match your environment. Nice how to brother 👍
looks great
Very cool 😎. I do like the idea. I have stayed away from that pattern and now I have a use for it!
Shane Slone I mostly have too, but now it’s more useable, should’ve done this sooner.
I did the same thing with my UCP ACU jacket, it's really genius!
That's sick Brother. Came out real badass
Mike Flores FLOTEX KNIVES thanks my friend, much better than the standard ucp.
An obvious improvement. Great job SMM!
Huples Cat EPL thanks brother, I think so too.
That actually turned out really nice! Great job!
I’ve dyed a bunch of acid stuff , even a large ruck , but with brown , easier to dye in a large contractor bag, get out as much air as possible, much easier to move the bag around and dye it evenly… I want to do 3 green sustainment pouches to strap around it next
That worked out great. I always just use Krylon OD Green spray paint which has the added benefit of creating a dull visual surface, but also at the possible risk of paint flakes eventually breaking away and making its way into the lungs. Just an estimated concern. Next time the need arises I'll go with Ritz, thanks for the demo.
Tramontane it worked really good, and easy to do. I plan on doing some more stuff like this. Thanks brother!
Looks good brother. Be well.
I watched Brent's video the other day. Impressive change.
He’s got a great channel
@@SurvivorMetalMan
Yeah, I watched Bruce's afterwards. Im new to Bruce's channel. Both are good for reviews.
Thanks you guys!
That looks much much better. Awsome!!.
Scotty survival thanks brother!
Killer job mate, looks great.
Per Imerslund thanks my friend, it blends very well.
WOW looks great! I have lots of UCP gear. People laugh but that color is so easy to fix.
Myke it’s a much more effective camouflage, now that it’s dyed. A very easy process.
Definitely going to do that on my molle 2 rucksack. Very nice. Should work good for Florida.
Check out a product called Flex Seal . I used it on the bottom of a Molle 2 and it waterproofs the bottom of the pack .
@@QuantumMech_88 yeah, I bet that would work. Was going to do it this weekend, but might have to do some hurricane prep.
Outdoors-Z-y-Z - It works better than silicone spray . My Molle was originally desert cammo and after adding some green rit to a few areas , it pretty much disappears in the high desert of NM and south Colorado . Stay safe and good luck .
This video came out a while ago, did that end up good for you? I'm wondering how you dealt with the whole frame being sage green
@@gavinshaw7661 It worked out great. I also did a second one where I mixed some black with green too.
Stirring it up with a 2x4! That’s what’s I’m talking about!
It's really beautiful after dyed it.
Nice job. I’m going to do this project and paint the buckles
Looks a 100 times better, Good job man.
Team Lucky Hat thanks brother, should work much better. Might have to try some desert sand color on some acu’s and just see how it will work out too.
I can't remember who did it but someone did a color I only seen one time and that is peacock green real nice.
Superb job!
WOW! this is also awesome! Every colouring is better than the original AT pattern! (never understood why the US Army introduced this grey uniform).
I've got one my Son gave me from one of his Deployments. I Love the Pack but have always Hated that the Pattern. Gonna fix that this weekend.
Pretty good outcome and the blending of terrain- good video
That turned out really nice. Thanks for sharing the video.
Gonna dye a mk1 osprey brit lbv this weekend. Thanks for the video i was concerned about the synthetics taking dye but now im ready to go
hcrawford1970 should look good brother!
Great idea. I really like the color. Im going to have to give it a try
Missourihomesteader1 thanks my friend! Do it!
I did the dark brown and light brown together on my packs came out very well>
Sweet. I'm going to try this with Italian Vegetato camo
Looks great dude.
Good job. I like the new color.
Nathan4071 thanks brother, should work good.
wow, looks great. Wondering about a darker version. I know the Army was looking at doing this. But luckly went with the Scorpian Camo Pattern.
That looks awesome. Great job.
Morning buddy 😁 👍. But i would have left it for winter. Snow cam. It looks sweet bro. Stay cool. ATB Andy 🇬🇧 👍 ☕
I’m thinking of dyeing some uni’s a sand/tan for fall/winter, and see how it looks.
That came out really nice! very cool brother stay well and have a great day!
Thanks brother!
Epic improvement!!!
It was really beautiful! Assimilate plants around It is! You can't find it if you drop the bag yourself!
Thanks my friend, it turned out really well.
Great video and a good idea to do this outside away from any carpet . A Molle pack in desert cammo had some green rit added in places and now it pretty much disappears in the high desert of NM & CO .
I sprayed some Flex Seal on the bottom which waterproofs the bottom . Thanks for your video Survivor Metal Man and all the best .
SAR TRACKING thanks my friend!
@SurvivorMetalMan - You have a friend in Texas who has a cool channel . I subscribed to both of you dudes . Have a great weekend Brother .

Well done.
Looks good. I probably would have gone with a coyote but that's just a personal preference. I kinda want to get some ACUs and tie dye them now. Nice work. 👍
Green Badger Outdoors I will do some in some kind of sand/tan, for fall/winter, and see which color works best. The ucp acu’s are cheap and plentiful brother. Do it!
Nice! Gonna do the same, but I have the big one with frame
Will need a big bucket😁
great idea n job.on the pack
Thanks brother!
Nice! Love the pack and new color!
Thanks brother, it’ll definitely blend in better than it did.
Very good, I need to do that. My packs and ACU's are all the Iraq AC Digital pattern and not conducive to Kansas!
It’s pretty much a useless pattern, only good in various areas few and far between. This makes it much more effective for our areas.
Looks good 👍
To get a more olive tone use 3 pts yellow to 1 pt black as your dye.
Hey Bro! Very nice review and Cool idea to change the color.
Thanks brother!
Now I have to buy a brick for a new project! thanks
Looks good brother, nice field test!
Thanks brother!
nice pack i got a 90's alice us od green pack with brace and canteens that one looks nice bro
Thanks brother! The Alice pack is tried and true, solid, bombproof.
Thanks for the video. Ive used Rit Dark Green tho
Looks great! Well done!
Wow that's amazing brother job
Thank you my friend!
I'd be interested to see how well this works under night vision.
Might light up under ir
I’ve read somewhere that rit dye doesn’t mess with the IR treatment but I don’t have nods so I can’t confirm.
Hey man I learned that the hard way my rit dyemore polyester for fleece clothing. didn't work I'm going to do the project over with hot water on the stove. soon as Michael's gets the chocolate brown rit dyemore color again!!!
Codename Hannibal it makes that ucp look a lot better, and more effective in woodland environments.
@@SurvivorMetalMan I was trying for coyote brown on the GEN III ECWCS Polartec Fleece Sand Color long johns.
Thank you for the helpful video!
Thanks for watching!
Way better than before.
Looks good! 👍👍👍
Nice job looks good thanks
Thanks brother!
Very cool
Very similar to the camouflage of the Mexican Army
PURA PINCHÉ SEDENA ALA VERGA COMPA 🔥🔥🔥💪💪💪😎
I have all my gear in ACU mostly because it's very affordable I noticed it works really well in an urban/suburban environment witch alot of us live in
Marcus Esler agreed, but I’m in the countryside more.
@@SurvivorMetalMan I know I've seen the property patrols I think the ACU dyed works better then the multi cam what dye color did you use to get that result?
@@marcuse4594 looks like Apple green rit dye. Other youtubers did the same.
I agree UCP is the worst but probably works for an urban enviro. My UCP 3 day has od or multicam pouches attatched so most of the ucp is covered up. You did a nice job! Love your vids...always look fwd to them. Nice job! The "after" test in the foliage was great! Your wife actually let you put it in the dryer???
I want to get one in multicam, but this works pretty good. I rinsed it out pretty good before putting it in the dryer lol
Could you do the process multiple times for darker color? Trying to go for a ranger green. It will be on a point blank flak vest
great stuff
Smokey Canopy outdoors thanks brother!
Awesome
💪💪
Rippin lips57 thanks my friend!
Excellent. It looks great.
I just watched Bruce's video and was wondering how I would die the MOLLE II large pack I am about to get cheap.
Zayne I’d do it the exact same way, it’s the same material, dunk it!
@@SurvivorMetalMan Thank you for the video. I have a number of mag pouches, accessories pouches and a FLC vest - is it the same material as the backpacks?
Hey Brother! Got some good news for you! So I was watching the Uniform History Channel, and on the episode about the US Air Force, it turns out that the Air Force is dumping the ABU and going to the Army's OCP, which is basically Multicam. Why? Because the US Air Forces basically used the same damn colors as UCP! And it stuck out just like UCP! EXCEPT that instead of being a Digital pattern, it was a TIGER STRIPE! See the Possibilities after a Dye Job with RIT Apple Green? Now they did come in two separate weights, and they said that the Standard was VERY hot in the Desert, so the made a Summer Weight. Something to look out for. Also, the Navy has Dumped the "Blueberries" (the Uniformed GUARANTEED to Camoflauge you if you fell Overboard) for a Green Marpat-type. I won't comment on how little you I saw anything Green when I was at Sea in the Navy, but that's another Discussion. But I was thinking that dyeing the Navy Uniform in BLACK could give you clothing for Night Patrols! Food for thought. Anyway, I'd thought you and others might be interested in making "Oklahoma Tiger Stripe"Combat Uniforms out of Air Force ABUs. And check out the "Uniform History" Channel. Lots of Cool Info there. Hope this helps. Stay Heavy!✌️🤘🤘🤘
Leslie Kovacs yep, my cousin retired out of the Air Force a year or so ago, he’s supposed to give me a bunch of stuff, but we don’t see each other much, but hopefully a bunch of goodies will come my way. Lol. I like that new navy pattern, very similar to the Canadian CADPAT stuff. Black on the navy blue stuff would be great, should be tons of all that stuff for very cheap soon.
Too much black and you show up too easily in IR illuminator and image intensifier night vision.
That's a great end result ! Has any of the color faded since you painted it and does it leave marks on other pieces of clothing ?
Best thing you can do with UCP. Honestly I cannot understand why the worlds most powerful army chose that UCP ACU crap
Adam all about the money
@@SurvivorMetalMan why was their vested business interests in buying ucp? Glad to see the British army now follows the US army with MTP multicam
