@@BlackGuyDIY there isn’t anything to debate, you used it like a backpack for office work. It’s complete junk in the field or combat. If one single “prepper” buys this garbage because of your comment you did them a huge injustice. Every single one of these ripped or the buckles broke, all the Molle kit issued in the Rapid fielding initiative was a huge failure, rucksack frames warping or snapping in half, rucksack just a giant useless open thin bag, ACU single stitching, every soldier in Iraq exposed his junk to every Iraqi they encountered because the crotches blew out, the assault pack is as thin as the ruck, no dedicated radio pouch, thin material that equipment would rub right through. This stuff is universally hated by every grunt that had to use it for a reason.

11B in the Army and I can attest that these packs are great. We typically have our name sewn on the front of the pack to identify it. It is definitely more of a one range day pack for an MRE and water than anything we actually use for multiple days in the field. The large rucksack is what we use vast majority of the time because it just gives you so much more working space and you never know when you’re going to have to strap something extra to your own pack that somebody else can’t carry or they got hurt and you’re taking their stuff now.

A tip for the shoulder straps: buy a $20 set of shellback tactical pads. They velcro right on to the shoulder straps, and make a world of difference if you carry more than 10lb for any length of time.

The trap door velcro covers at the top were where the paratrooper straps came through, i do believe, although they work for camelback hoses or antennas. From what I read, that webbing was not used for parachute drops after it was tested and found to not be strong enough (must have been the way it was attached- the straps themselves are heavy duty enough to lift a car). Cutting those straps out saves quite a bit of needless weight- something like 1/2 lb. Great pack overall.

I've been Army 11B for only 3 years but from personal experience I would highly recommend the current Army issue medium ruck. its significantly bigger than the assault pack, also has a very strong plastic back brace built in and a waist strap. Every time I go to the field and I'm not bringing my large ruck, I always use my Medium. My unit will always use the assault pack as an extra source of storage combined with the medium or large ruck, but never as a primary way to pack. one of my buddies that I went to Army RECON with was only issued a medium ruck. Everyone else had a large ruck but he somehow managed to get through RECON with only the medium ruck. IDK just some food for thought!

I still remember my issued pack in the British army, it was dated 1992 and this was in 2013, this is really impressive for an issued pack, I have found over the years that the US military generally does a much better job when it comes to spending money on its troops, while in the UK we are given kit that's years old and pretty much just trained and told to make do.

This pack is basically same era as the british DPM patrol pack. It is part of the Molle II system, which was originally in M81 woodland. It same "end of 80s, start of 90s" era. Personally, I like more the dpm patrol pack in the woods than this US counterpart - it is more versatile in terms of easy carrying mat or sleeping bag, less straps and waste weight, less "grabby on the tree branches". Patrol pack is also lighter (almost 400 grams less), the side pockets are integrated while on US assault pack, it is hard to attach sustainment pouches from the same system. Really good idea is the bandolier attachment in front pouch. but the top lid pouches in patrol pack are big as well.

Actually Sootch that Assault Pack, ( I call a Patrol or Day Pack ) docks down to the larger MOLLE II Main Ruck. Yes it is apart of a pack system. The Main ruck attaches to a frame, that small pack you have attaches to the main ruck. Either way excellent video.

Howdy Sootch, The extra heavy web / straps and handle inside the main pack area (from what I have been told) The handle is for your buddy to grab onto and pull you out of harms way into cover when you have been shot and can't move on your own. Now comes the tricky part the web is used for extracting you via Helo and you can't get in on your own power. Not my idea of a way to go flying but if you are unconscious then I guess it won't matter to you.

The bag you have is not in ACU pattern. Its the Universal Camouflage pattern (UCP). The Army Combat Uniform (ACU) is not itself a pattern, its the particular the name given to the particular uniform that is currently in service.
Compared to other bags on the market, these bags are garbage. 18 years in the military. I've been issued one or more in every color, and if I ever packed stuff in it, it was because I was forced to. Its uncomfortable to wear, especially when wearing with armor. The straps will seperate and pull your shoulders back, and those quick release buckles are notorious for breaking. The back support is flimsy foam glued to a plastic sheet. The best thing these bags are good for, are to carry ammo as an AG in a weapons team. Or as additional cu/ft of storage when attached to your ruck.

I'm an Airforce medical Veteran, this assault pack was after my time.
I did see the center white straps and center strap inside.
My first thoughts were they were
" Man Down " straps to pull a unconscious or wounded soldier.
Just unzip and pull the soldier. For any long distance ports for the straps to keep the wounded soldiers gear dry and from falling out of pack.
The center one to put a pole in for 2 man carry.
    Just my thoughts.

I've never had a problem with that but I have the small shelf attached to the frame. Another solution is to get a small thin rectangleular garbage can or basket & put it in the bag, you may have to cut it down to just fit in the bottom. Also keeps things dry while lying on the ground.

Regarding the camo pattern, I absolutely love it. I think it's probably my favorite one and I also think it's more invisible than any of the other camo patterns. After a while my eye just can't focus on it anymore and it disappears. I'm being serious.

    • @user-neo71665

Don't care for the pattern but I love the fact nobody likes it so it keeps the prices down. I don't buy gear to be walking down a runway with so I could care less about the looks.

Ik you can rig em on there using the compression strap, but I wish this was designed to attach the sustainment pouches not just the canteen pouches. With the two sustainment pouches and the waist pack all attached to the assault pack it's like a poor man's medium ruck. You could even potentially swap out the waist pack for the mss carrier. you get the pack up around 60L with the waist pack and sustainment pouches

I just grabbed an assault pack off of market place for 25$ today and 15 minutes later I found a full large ruck sack system for 30$ in near perfect condition. The ruck has all the pads and straps with frame. Only thing it didn't have was the sustainment pouches. I figured I would set it up with all my sleep kit and cold weather gear for long hunting trips and the 3 day for when I'm just going out for a night or 2 camping. So for 55$ I have almost the entire molle 2 system. If only i could find the medium ruck for a reasonable price. They're all around 200 on eBay. I've also got an old lc1 Alice large ruck but it needs a frame and stuff to be useable.

You see the straps on the front that go over your shoulder? I take 500 lumen headlamps and ziptie them on near shoulder length so I can see hands free at night. I can use dual strobe for disorientating ppl/animals or the red light feature for stealth. I strap 2 on the back to do I can blind things from behind or make it so whoever is beside me can look behind and see w/o me turning around (of course I turn off certain lights to not blind my partner) but if I'm alone a light in the rear can discourage being followed or confuse something on which direction I'm truly facing.
