Thanks for watching. Now this is a great trimmer but would you pay this much for it?
When we bought our house in 2004, I needed a trimmer, so I bought a weed eater, it did not have a clutch thus led to carbon fouling and clogging the spark arrestor, due to my large property. So I sold it, and bought a Sthil FS 45. The price was decent, and I’m happy with it, as it still works fine to this day, with zero maintenance , fuel lines and purge bulb maybe the first to go., still not bad for 19 years.
wow very nice!
I used an FS90R professionally and they are ridiculously tough. Left them in the rain, buried in debris, very minimal maintenance and they started every time. I would buy one again
nice thanks for sharing that
Too bad they're discontinued
They are mighty when you're running a commercial business you need it to perform everytime that's exactly what they do. For home use you can buy something a lot cheaper.
One thing I miss is Shindaiwa (pre-Echo). I love Echo but the Shindaiwa stuff before they were bought out was the bees knees. I worked at an equipment rental place in the early 2000's and we had several brands (small equipment to large excavators). I was always amazed at how well Shindaiwa stuff held up after customers took it and did whatever weird, kinky stuff that people did to destroy rental equipment. I became convinced back then that Japanese designed equipment was all around the best bang for the buck and was elated when we bought new Komatsu dozers to replace the old John Deeres. They were 2/3 the cost for the same size machine and every bit as good.
you got that right, and they are really good machines
We sold Shindaiwa and before that it's close cousin Green Machine. The only modern trimmer that can run with a B45 especially as a Christmas tree cutter is the big Maruyama. I am still running a 25 year old 230 that goes trail clearing that thing spent its early life with a landscape crew before I picked it up.
I buy a lot of non-running Stihl equipment that I repair and sell as a hobby that I enjoy. Most of the time all they need is a carb kit and fuel lines and they're good to go. I also do lawn care for several homes in my neighborhood when the residents summer up North (I live in Florida).
I love your channel and get the impression that you probably work an office job like I do. I find this to be a great way to offset the many hours I spend in front of a computer working in database analytics. P.S. - all of my personal equipment is Stihl that I've picked up cheaply and repaired.
nice, thank you John Taylor, I appreciate it a lot!
Where do you get your replacement parts? Do you have a preferred aftermarket brand? I just need a maintenance kit for my BR 350 and none of the dealers near me have them.
I have spent roughly $450 on my echo trimmer (PAS2620 (motor only) - $320, protoque trimmer attachment - $100, speedfeed head $30). The reason I bought the commercial trimmer was because I do lawncare on the side, and I could easily justify the cost of it. The other reason is, I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for, so this trimmer should last me for a LONG time. My dad got a srm225 slightly used and it is a great trimmer, but echo definitely cut some corners on it compared to my 2620. But compare that to the stihl fs56 the 225 is in a league of its own. From what I have seen of the stihls (fs55-56, 85, 91etc) that I work on, they don't seem to be built as good as the comparable Echos. So I can agree with the statement that stihls are overpriced.
thank you Ethan Miller, and your PA trimmer is a real beast!
I own an FS90R like this one, I’ve had it for around 6 years now. It is a beast, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
very nice trimmer you got there
I've been using an fs70r for 4 years clearing brush with the high grass blade kit that stihl sales reclaiming parts of a farm for my sister and a piece of property we bought. I also maintain 5 lawns for other people and I've never had any trouble with it. It's super easy to string the head too
nice, thank you Cipher Code for sharing that and vouching for them.
I have a FS 45 that I bought new 11 years ago,and I haven't had the spark plug out of it nor have ever replaced anything other than the primer bulb in all the time that I have owned it. I use Stens 32-1 fuel mix and keep it in a warm area in the winter time. Starting it once a month is key for keeping it going as far as I'm concerned
wow very Nice!
We've had our stihl trimmer for 19 years now and thats been 19 year of no problems and complete reliability
wow very nice! I have a good feeling, it's going to continue to keep working too.
I just got an FS91R for its ability to clear heavier brush with the blade adapter. Let me tell you it is a beast that cuts trees saplings as thick as my thumb. Other than that I agree it is kinda overkill for your average homeowner just edging sidewalks and fences.
yes these are monsters at delivering power and performance, perfect machine for the job!
My mother bought a Husqvarna self-propelled walk-behind mower some years ago and was very pleased with it. She still has it and hardly gives her any problems (I think part of it is from her son doing maintenance on it, but I guess we will never know for sure...). She wanted to get a string trimmer of the same brand, so I went shopping for one to get an idea of pricing.
Not saying there was sticker shock, but I certainly was not expecting trimmers to be up there! I went into my local TSC store and found a barely used Husqvarna 122LK trimmer on sale. Tag said it "does not stay running" and was set at about $110.
Normally, I wouldn't have given it a second thought and would have waited to see if the price would drop more in future weeks. But then I got a call from her saying that the sales associate from another store would meet up with her later that week and would help pick one out for her.
Not wanting to have spent the last couple of weeks for nothing (and my pride), I attempted to talk them down on the price, but the manager would not budge on it. So (you could hear me struggling to pull my wallet out) I decided to get it. Would I regret it? I normally don't pay for this kind of thing!
Got it home, cleaned it up, and checked it out. No deep scratches on the plastics (including the guard), and the spark plug was clean, so I put some fuel in the carburetor, gave it a few good pulls, and it started and died. Adjusted the carburetor, got it running, then got it running well, and that thing is still running well after three years of hard use (including her letting family members borrow it).
So, to answer your question, it was only because that was the brand my mother wanted! 😆
Guess I did okay, considering that the 122LK trimmer can be purchased on the Husqvarna website for about $200.00 here in 2023. 🐺🔧
hey I think you did pretty good! thanks for sharing that .
From my experience my dad bought one a long time ago I can’t even remember when he got it but now I’m starting to weed whack the yard and I’ve used all kinds and I decided to try the stihl and man it’s way more powerful and more effective
depending on which one you get, yes they are.
Hey @inside house garage, big fan of the channel. Which cleaner do you use to clean your equipment? I used a degreaser in a spray bottle the other day on the body of a riding mower and when I wiped it down the paper towel was a 1980s craftsman green. Pretty sure I was stripping the paint off and am thinking i need something a little less harsh.
sure it's a Degreaser from Harbor Freight and according to the instructions you have to be very cautious using it on paint. I would not leave It on there for more than 1 minute
I have a Stihl FS250R trimmer that is a 2004 and was used commercially for many years. It still runs great. It was originally a $550 dollar trimmer in 2004. If you get 5 years out if a Ryobi, Craftsman, Troy Bilt trimmer, that is good. I have a StihlFS90R trimmer that I bought used in 2008 and is still running great, and used commercially for several years. I also have a Stihl FS55 trimmer that was given to me for free from a customer and still runs great. It is absolutely worth the money. No cheap trimmer will perform with the power, reliability, and longevity of a quality product. Sometimes in life you gotta shell out the bucks to get the real deal.
wow very nice equipment! and yes if taken care of, they will last. Thank you Mike Spain
In my experience, them more expensive stihl models are worth it if you’re running something like a brush cutting blade or something. That extra power pays off then
I can agree with that
These are awesome units, the only major issue that I have found with these 4 mix trimmers is that the clutch bearing goes bad, it gets full of dirt and locks up, and then the head won't stop spinning. The only way to replace the bearing is to replace the entire housing which is 50 - 100 bucks.
oh did know about the clutch bearing but it makes sense because of their long life.
Forgot the leaky carbs, bad cam pins and leaky seal .
For me personally I love Stihl's build quality. I recently bought a lot of Stihl trimmers in an auction for a great price, (FS-90r, FS-91r, HT-101) I don't think I would ever buy these new. The warranty isn't all that great and besides dealing with Stihl dealers in my experience hasn't been too good.
you bring up a good point, just because someone is there to ask question and then take your money, it's really not that much better.
I have an fs90r and a 94r that I got both of them used and paid less than 250 for both and have worked great for years with no issues
nice!
Hey bro, what's up? As you know I am a huge fan and user of Stihl products. I think that the name Stihl is recognized all over the world with their various types of equipment. Where I live in the Caribbean here, our choices were limited to the different brands of equipment and because I've been using this brand of equipment for the past 2 decades, I've never had any major issues with any of my equipment.
nice, and yes they are very good products and for the price they certainly seem capable to do the job and for a long time! thank you Ramadin Sookhoo.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE on the other hand I have one issue with these equipment and that is the cost is very high! Even though their pricing is way above my budget, I still opt in getting them because I know they will last a very long time once they are taken care of
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE you're welcome bro
nothing wrong with and I completely understand why
I bought my FS90 way back in 2007, I do have a large Garden (6700qm) and never did regret the higher price. I use it a lot.
regards Christian in Germany
nice, thank you for vouching for them
Love the Lexus LFA and if I had a million dollars I would buy one without hesitation. But, then I love Stihl equipment and have a blower and trimmer. So....
nothing wrong with either choice, if you need and want to the Stihl , go for it, thank you Ryan Smith.
"You get what you pay for" is generally true but not always.
Higher end items are typically made of better quality materials, and parts. This is why many cheaper items fail a lot more, and quicker.
Nothing is exempt was failure due to neglect no matter how high quality an item is.
well said!
I have an fs38, it's 3 years old i paid about $220 CAD after taxes. Piror to that I had a troybilt that lasted only 1 season, the shaft stopped getting up to speed. That's why I went with stihl.
I live on an old farm, parts of my grass is more hay like than grass. The stihl isn't bad however i do wish i had a more powerful engine with a straight shaft so i can put on a bushblade.
you pretty much summed up the FS38 exactly
Keep the head and cable greased often
Stihl was originally a commercial machine, not made for the average home owner. It got the rep it has due to durability. However, an Echo, Poulan, or any other low price machine is better for the average person. These machines do not have the durability of Stihl for constant use but will last just as long as a Stihl because it takes a longer time to reach the same usage a commercial Stihl would get before needing a repair. I personally use whatever brand I get a hold of. I could never see any reason going and buying a brand new one when I find them on the curb all the time. I simply take one that I find which isn't running (nearly ALWAYS a clogged carb), clean it up, fix it and put it in my shed.
you make a good point!
Sthil was not just a commercial machine, what made Sthil popular was marketing. Echo ,Husky ,Redmax Shindaiwa and Maruyama are just as or better. The fourmix will not last as long as a regular 2 cycle trimmer and their small two cycle stuff is no better than a home depot Poulan.
Biggest thing I see with 4 mixes is the cam, or just needing a valve adjustment. Change out the metering diaphragm and pump side when needed. When they bought Zama those super cheap parts got lower quality somehow. And trash fuel trashes everything, see that a LOT.
Well if a straight shaft homelite is almost $200 and an echo srm 225 is $270 I will prefer the echo, but I fix equipment as a hobby so my shop is full of cheap trimmers
you and me both!
I just stack them up all summer and build them up all winter using them for parts and very little new parts but filters and fuel hose
All I'm going to say, is stihl somehow earned their reputation. Not sure how, but that information has value.
I appreciate this comment a lot and yes Stihl is great stuff, no question about that! thank you TheRandom Man.
It was mainly from the amount they spent on marketing. They were never better than any of the other manufacturers.
I use "trimmer" as a mower for my vineyard (based Europe - Slovenia) because it is impossible to cut grass there any other way (very steep, narrow etc...) around 1600 m2 of grass to cut. When i bought a new trimmer/mower i purley looked at what do you get for your money (HP). So i bought a kawasaki tj45-e engine trimmer (backpack version). This was back in 2015. I mow my vineyard once a month or once two months (usually when grass is 40-50 cm tall) and have never even serviced it. With quality line it cuts high and dense grass like butter. I just use good oil for my mix. But just for consideration i use my trimmer for 5-7 hour straight with only break to refuel and change line (and drink a spritzer of course). So you might say i am quite hard user. So my answer is i wouldn't pay a lot more money for a Stihl trimmer (same power as my kawasaki) in the future. There are a lot of brand out there that deliver great quality and power although they aren't as famous as stihl. I also own an Active 2.8 (Italianbrand of trimmers) when i bought it it was priced about same as Stihl FS55R which is at my grandparents house. The only diffrence is that for the money i got a lot poweful machine that has worked flawless for me in the past 4 years.
very nice, sounds like your equipment is very important to you and your business
I have a Stihl fs 460 c-em k and I’m happy with it. I haven’t had much trouble at all with it. All tho, the price is quite expensive
nice, thank you for vouching for it.
My first Stihl FS 55 was second hand from a elderly gentleman whom I mowed his lawn, it was in good condition and had minimal use as it was a small yard.
Unfortunately the gear box went over 5 years of considerable uses deprecated not greasing the grease nipple, the repair Bill was $221 at the time a replacement was only $349.00 or the FS55 so I decided to upgrade to the FS 85 which was $100 extra but included a grease nipple as the FS 55 changed to an enclosed gearbox so greasing wasn’t available, doing a gearbox made my choice easy.
Note: in Australia and was before I started repairing small engines myself or brought Chinese replacement parts, a gearbox would of only costed me $60 or so if I did the work.
Buying a new machine also gave me a 2 year warranty which I didn’t need nor had brought any replacement parts except for Stihl grease tube.😊
Have used my FS 85 frequently on a semi commercial bases, for over 8 years but have some FS 38 & FS 45’s for small jobs I’ve repaired for little work.
nice you definitely made the right choice then! Thank you Rick Thelian for the comment
I actually just bought the current version of that trimmer, but I didn't buy it to trim my yard as much as I wanted a trimmer that was suitable for brush cutting blades, which I couldn't use on my old trimmer.
that makes sense
I need a constantly reliable and durable machine that I can trust and using a fs91r for 6 hours a day hasn't served me a single issues. And If something was to break there's a massive spare parts network here in australia
I hear ya, nothing wrong with your choice
I buy used like a old echo style hedge trimmer for 20 got it running
nice work!
I’m only 15 and I have about 5 weedwackers/edgers multiple push mowers and a blower and a few chain saws and I would never buy lawn equipment new all of my stuff I got for free or really cheap and spent a few hours fixing it all but I am looking forward to finding a stihl or echo in the future for free or next to nothing
nice collection you got there!
I brought a second hand greenfield mower. for cheap because there was a small problem the previous owner of it went out and brought a brand new greenfield. There reasoning is that because they had the money and they also didn't want to go through of buying a decent second hand mower. Even if the second hand mower had nothing wrong with it. Thats the same with my trimmers. When considering purchasing a trimmer I would always keep in account buying brand new. I would always be incline to buy brand new. But now when buying a car. I wouldnt even consider buying brand new until I am finically stable.
I like the way you put that!
I spent 300 on my fs91r, because I know that if I take care of it, my kids will be running it. But ofc, I work on these all of the time.
yes you are correct!
I will pay for Sthil every time. I used their products commercially in Florida for 7 years. When I moved to Missouri, I didn't want to pay 400 for each piece, so I opted for the Sthil KM series. For the typical homeowner the money on a KM unit and a couple of attachments. I bought a KM 110, 11 years ago, I've spent 40$ on a new carb and a few primer bulbs. I will pay a few dollars more for the longevity, I personally, have experienced with Sthil equipment.
nice logic, thank you Eric Carriker
Great machine. 👍🙏👍🙏
It sure is!
I’ve never had good luck with stihl. The echo SRM 225 is the best bang for the buck in my opinion. Reliable, lite, and has good power
I agree, I like the echo
well for me i have got the Stihl FS 55 RC brand new and well even thought it does not look like that does not mean it,s a dud or a unreliable trimmer or brushcutter ot my books and well i have never thought about buying a engine like that with the 4 mix technology yet but if your a person who,s thinking about it well i say go for it for all your yard work needs even if you need the Kombi-System attachments etc.
you're absolutely right, these are definitely great If you need something like that.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE for sure.
I bought my FS91R almost two years ago, it’s a great machine but it definitely is expensive.
I totally agree!
I've got a BR-350 Backpack blower and wow! What a hassle to find a maintenance kit! Anyone out there have a preferred aftermarket brand? I looked at Stens, but I couldn't find an air filter or a maintenance kit through them. I also tried looking at the user manual for a part number, but of course Stihl doesn't provide that either. I've looked at 4 different Stihl dealers in my area and none of the have what I need in stock.
that makes sense it costs them money to keep items tin stock so they're going to have to order one and wait for it.
I’ve not considered buying a stihl unit, because the amount of use it would get does not justify the cost.
The 4mix engines have an issue with the connecting rod. The wrist pin end wasn't heat treated and as such they have a bush instead of a bearing. The issue is cheaper oils won't lubricate it and one day you have a clacky engine that's now running on borrowed time.
ah, thank you for the information
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE all good mate 👍
What do you spray on it to clean the trimmer?
I use Super Heavy Duty Degreaser from Harbor Freight
Always used echo trimmers and brush cutters, love them, they are priced decent, and are reliable, never been a stihl fan.
I feel the same way about echo, good stuff and great price
What are you using to clean your trimmer?
I'm using the gallon jug of yellow degreaser from harbor freight
Commercial OPE, for homeowners, IMO, is hard to justify. I have some commercial OPE, but I got it all used and cheap. I have enough property now to justify high end homeowner/low end commercial equipment. When I just had a subdivision lot to maintain, I had no commercial OPE, but I DID have good quality homeowner equipment (Toro & Echo). Commercial equipment is nice, but the new price on such equipment is hard to justify unless you're using it, you know, commercially.
I see your point
Blasted 4-mix. I NEVER have liked those things, BUT IF I was needing one, the color has NOTHING to do with it. Wouldn't even care if it was CLEAR! One with not much power just takes longer to do a job and that's it for me. I'm not in a rush. I got the Stihl 85 blower for $20 from our trash hauler. I got my first Stihl saw by swapping an XL-12 Homelite for it. The Super 45 was a real deal and the 440 Magnum was a freebee but I put a OEM top end on it. BUT we also used WEEDEATER trimmers for YEARS and the son-in-law is STILL using them. I'm charging the battery for Sweetie's trimmer right now. She wants to try my DeWalt next time. Whatever works is the slogan for this homestead. I bought a Stihl brushcutter new YEARS ago for a trimmer and it wasn't much but did fine cutting brush and trees. My trimmer was the Echo convertible with different attachments the son-in-law has now. Times change and as we get more geezerish, we do too. I still like tinkering but..................! Thanks and BLESSINGS!
well said!
Weed eater brand of lawn care equipment use to be worth the money back in the day
yes you're right
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE cool beans 🫘 there young man 👍😎
Yes
thank you Kenneth
Why soap and water instead of windex and a rag?
use what you got
As far as trimmers and saws go I prefer husqvarna over stihl id even take a ryobi trimmer over the stihl i have one in my garage the only thing that has stopped it so far is the bearing in at the end of the shaft locking up
have you looked into replacing the bearing?
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGEI haven't been able to the bearing just the entire bottom half of the shaft
I needed a good leaf lower and a trimmer,. Researched and got Echo for the two for under what a single Stihl trimmer would have cost me. Not sure where the doubt or question is for home users. Yeah, I guess when money is easy for some, they don't think or consider the price or reliability or value. Brand is king, and what they have to SHOW FOR is what matters.
I think It's the cost, some only see dollar signs
I got my KM130r because I wanted quality but also the power. I have a “bed definer” attachment that is just basically a blade that throws dirt. Frankly the 130 is just stupid over powered and runs even the hardest attachments like the bed definer quite easily. Also I love the throttle response and torque of the 4mix. Another big advantage to them that Stihl uses In marketing is fuel efficiency. For a commercial guy running machines all day it doesn’t take very long for the better fuel economy of the 4mix motors to make up the cost difference. That and they have a much lower tone that’s far less annoying to neighbors than 2 stroke engines.
With that said I’m just a home owner who likes cool toys.
thank you briantii!
I work on all brands and really there’s not much difference between the brands
Parts are easier on some brands and terrible high for others
Just keep it serviced and real fuel mix at 45-1 and it will last
nice, I like this comment a lot. thank you Phillip Hall.
I wanna see your hoard of equipment.
sorry that's private
I personally don’t like stihl equipment because I’ve never had any luck fixing them and they are turning electric
I think lots of people have that same feeling
I bought the 131R and I’m more than happy I did, however I’m using it with the blade attachments and really abusing the trimmer.
Frankly if I just had grass to trim I’d go with a dewalt electric, but I use it to take down up to 2” trees down near the ground for clearing season.
I also am a tree worker by trade so it simplifies the process to order filters and everything for all of my tools at once, rather than work with multiple different companies and storefronts for orders.
thank for sharing your experience seth364
Thars just an ignorant statement. Paying a lot more for a weed eater means it should last forever or you should never have any trouble with it! I believe in you get what you pay for and thats more true nowadays than ever. Like craftsman mowers are pretty much one n done one mowing season and its junk or buy a John Deere or Kubota and abuse the hell out of it for 10 seasons but your still gonna have problems maybe even from the start and most of it depends on how much you use it weed eater or lawnmower car motorcycle etc. Ive tried almost every type of weed eater and chainsaw and the only brand that compares is Husqvarna everything else is junk!
thanks for the comment
My fs91r has been reliable since I got it new 3 years ago and it has great power I paid $360 for it, I recently bought a echo pe-225 edger and I know it’s not a trimmer but it’s a lot more balanced and a lot better to carry around, engine runs great and is also simpler to start, the stihl has that turn knob with the choke that kicks off when you hit the throttle and I find it can cause more issues than ease of starting, echos basic setup is better IMO
Of course this echo I bought is on the lower end but it doesn’t look like they cheaped out on the things that matter, as far as I know the engine is the same they use on some professional models and the shaft and head look quality, also the grip is more comfortable than the stihls In the sense of the shape..having this echo makes me regret buying the stihl.
My stihl bg56 blower has given me issues with starting because the air filter box is a terrible design, a lot of dirt gets around the filter and into the engine because where the filter seals against the airbox there is no seal, the filter is a felt like material and the air box has a skinny plastic ring that does not seal where the echo has a felt type filter with rubber to seal.
you got that right, these older ones are great.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I went out this afternoon and bought a brand new srm 2620, used it once and I already love it!

I do not care for the Stihl 4 mix for homeowner use. I also will not work on them because they are a pain IMO and have lots of common problems when used Commercially.
they are definitely not "faultless"
I thought you were going to repair the trimmer?
in the next video on my other channel this Friday I repair it.
My little Craftsman MTD made trimmer from Lowe's is still running. I grabbed it up when Lowe's started carrying Craftsman back in like 2016 or 18.. It starts every season so far but I use true fuel at the end of the season before it's put away.
I don't see any extra value from the overpriced brand.
You can buy a Chevy Tahoe or a Cadillac Escalade.. The 2 look the same, they do the same thing. But atleast a Cadillac has extra features and amenities.
you make a good point, and yes for the price the Tahoe and a fantastic value without the extra costs
Random thought …. Why are brush-cutter / line trimmer blade’s Always made to cut a smaller diameter than the line head trimmer diameter cutting width . F.Y.I.
I went to my local sthil repair shop last week …to bye some fuel Lin for my old pro Mac 5700 chainsaw ….. I was planning to get a couple of feet of different diameter fuel lines .until I asked how much it was per foot . $10 dollars 🤯 ⁉️. I said to the shop attendant … no no , I didn’t want the entire box of fuel line Just 12 inches . What a fukn scam .
don't know the answer to the first question, and yes fuel line can be very expensive
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE the repair guy mentioned the fact that the fuel line , was actually , A medical grade tubing . 🤔 I might look at a few pharmaceutical supply stores / chemist 🤔🤷 .
My daughter bought a sthil and I had issues with it. Echo makes much better equipment these days for much less money. Sthil has gone the way of John Deere, all name and the products are no better than other brands.
very well said
I wouldn't buy it because it's a Stihl...not a fan of their products in general and in specific - I don't like the added complexity of the 4mix...while I have a comparable Echo SRM-2620T - you hit the nail on the head with the SRM 225...it is the sweet spot of price/value IMHO for homeowner especially and even the professional 👍
thank you for that Kirk Leaper!
I dislike those 4mix engines
they are not everyones favorite, that's for sure
Same shit, different wrapping…
Soooooo salty
so extra
Perhaps your Cheap
there's no pressuring that, certainly aint rich .
I see comments about stihl basically being the all be all but personally I’ve had stihl until I was 19 but I quit buying them because there simply not made as good as the older ones was. I have a stihl fs90 or 91 I can’t remember at the moment but it’s a older one it has out lasted 3 fs94’s 😂 so I switched two echo & I gotta say if they keep making the x series they have my business. There tough as can be 🎉
nice, thanks for letting us know
so whats the point of this video? Looks like the trimmer was not maintained
