  • Welcome to this week's FEATURE FRIDAY ✌
This week we take a look at AFRO MUSIC FOR THE FIRST TIME, starting with Rema - Woman, we then listened to Tayc's new song "Le Temps", SAUTI SOL - "SURA YAKO" followed through pretty nicely with their complicated rhythms, then Tiwa Savage with "Koroba" made us adore not only her music but her fashion too! We were then totally mind-blown by Olamide's VR music video for "Loading" and to finish it all off Official Mafikizolo feat May D made us truly happy with their song "Happiness"✨
Join us this Sunday on FEATURE FRIDAY PLUS where we'll be chatting with ‪@magnushaven9779‬ at 12 pm Uk time! 😎🤩
Thank you all for the incredible suggestions!!! You are the best! ♥♥♥♥♥♥

if you are interested you can listen to the music sung by Griots when telling the stories of the past. There's video on youtube "Brikama Griots". Also Classical Mali music is pretty cool. Not sure who influenced who, but for me it has flamenco like elements. Cheers from el Caribe.

Eyyyy Kenya to the world 🇰🇪🇰🇪
Fyi three members of Sauti Sol were in highschool together Bien-Aimé(vocalist,songwriter,guitarist), Chimano (vocalist & plays the saxophone) and Savara who Efra will be very pleased to know aside from being a vocalist,he is a percussionist, drummer & producer. Polycarp (guitarist & producer) the 4th member joined afterwards. They mostly mix Swahili & English. Efra the one you said you like is Chimano and his range is absolutely wild. They still do acapella on their channel. Whenever you get time check out their songs like Suzanna,Melanin,Short & Sweet,Afrikan Star and they even featured a choir from their former highschool in a song called Kuliko Jana.

I am not a fun of Nigerian music but rather conglese, south african and East and central African music and I consider it Afro music!!! Afro beat is not afro beat unless your listening to Fela Kuti. You're talking about afro pop and afro fusion. Also amapiano is not a genre. Gqom and bhenga is the genre. Ama piano is a sound/style within the genres mentioned above. Its fused with the afro house sound which South Africa is renowned for. Most western deep and funky house artists, copy the sound from SA.

English speakers still limit this in English-speaking African countries when it comes to music, but you forget the Coupé-décalé among the Ivorians, even in Central Africa, you forget the Congolese who are very strong in music Ndombolo, Soukouss , Kwassa Kwassa. Angolans also Kuduro ... The francophone countries of Africa are there. I find them even better than the three genres of music you mentioned.

I would say rhythm is the highlight of most African music. There's lots of polyrhythmic texture and really intricately placed instrumentation. Also, I can't speak for other countries, but for Nigerian artists, they usually speak Pidgin, which is a form of broken English mixed with a lot of the local languages, including Yoruba, Ibo, and Hausa. The grammar is different, so for example when Tiwa says "I no come dis life to suffer," she's saying "I wasn't born to suffer." I think you'd get the gist of the message if you looked up the lyrics. Excited to see you guys do more afro music! Would love to see some Simi, Falz, Burna Boy, Partoranking, Niniola, Teniola, Adekunle Gold, WizKid, and Mr Eazi! And more Tiwa & Olamide! Love that y'all are staying true to the mission of the channel and really exploring all sorts of music.

East Africa has its own version of Afro-Pop. In other parts of Africa, you get Kwaito (South Africa), African Rumba and Kwasakwasa (Central Africa). I'm so happy about this!! I grew up in Senegal listening to many different genres and about your question about Reggaeton, it is actually very popular in Africa, especially with millenials and Gen Z. I also want to say that salsa is also big there. You'll definitely hear many salsa songs (from Celia Cruz, Jose Cande, for example) in weddings, parties, first communions, etc... Senegal has their own salsa (Senegalese Salsa), which is inspired by Afro-Carribean salsa. Much Love to you guys

Afrobeats is originally Nigerian, there's Ghanaian highlife, South Africa has many genres house etc. But most music in west Africa is now being grouped under afrobeats for some reason, there's a common rhythm and groove pattern in afrobeats (without even hearing any lyrics)

So I just stumbled on your channel & this reaction i’d say is one of the best I have seen on RUclips. I’d love to answer a few of your questions to the best of my knowledge. So I’m a Nigerian & in Nigeria we have different genres of music and we living in the country can tell you what part of the country it comes from . Afro Music is originally a Nigerian invention but now it’s sub divided, has spread round the continent and different African Countries & musicans have their own take on it. So there’s Afro Music , that stands alone then there’s Afrobeats, Afrojuju, Afro Highlife , Afro Alte, Afro Hip Hop , Afro Pop, Afro Fusion , Afro dancemusic , Afro R n B, etc. You’d notice that the Afro is added to stand alone / popular genres to make new genres and some of these genres can only be found in Nigeria . Now , not every African country has Afro music and it’s better to check with the artiste than to lump everyone together . Also , it’s a common mistake to say ohh African music is Afro Music , even some countries next door to Nigeria like Benin Republic don’t have Afro Music in their music genres .
You chose really amazing music to react to & that’s dope . Tayc is a Cameroonian/Camerounian/ French Cameroonian unless he states he is just French , lol coz you were trying to be so right about it , don’t sweat it . Also it’s Bad Boy Tims ft Olamide ( pronounced Ola- Me-Day) not the other way round . We do pronounce our Rs in Nigeria , lol the French and Arabic part of Africa do roll their Rs. I don’t know what the Portuguese & other parts of Africa do though . I’d love a part 2 reaction , this was really , really fun . Also , I do listen to a lot of Reggaeton , I think it’s amazing, uplifting and makes me dance . Actually I listen to any good music from any where in world , it just has to have good vibes like African music .
Lol , I think you dance when you hear African music because you are hearing the heartbeat of the continent, you just have to move lol but honestly it’s about the instruments used & the love put in. Our musical Instruments which varies from tribes to tribes even within the same country , add the extra oomph to our songs .
