This video has been blowing up lately for no reason lol, if you like BotW videos I did 2 others you can check out on my channel (in my opinion they are better than this one)
i personally really prefer the cel shading. i think the plasticy look really works for games like link's awakening, but in botw the soft lighting and glowy effects really add to the atmosphere.
Regular shading doesn't result it to look plastic by default though, its that Link's character model and textures weren't made in mind for that in mind
The cel shading is absolutely essential. Especially because only characters are cel shaded; the environment isn't. That creates a visual dynamic that is constantly stimulating the eye and steering gameplay. It was one of many brilliant decisions that made me sink so many hours into this game.
Perhaps that is why the Tunic of the Skies set looks great on Link in the Vanilla game. I can't say the same about the tunic of the wind set though, because he is so tall.

This game really doesn't look good without the cel shading. The characters look like they're made of plastic. If this were Toy Story or something like that, I would be fine with it, but this is The Legend of Zelda. The art style Nintendo chose for this game is hands down the only way this game looks so good.
The game looks better with cell shading, but I feel like if you took the plastic characters, dark environments, and added a little more detail to the models, the game would look amazing. Just look at the cutscene at 9:45. Everything looks great besides the faces.

This is the second comment I’ve read about the lake hylia cel-shading, I can’t believe I didn’t know about it until now. I’m gonna try it as soon as I can
I don't think this will be possible in any game, ever, because they would need to create two totally separate artstyles for the game. Imo, Gannon himself looks by far the best out of the show case. I think a lot of the environments and assets feel fairly made for the shell shading style and having that taken away makes them feel slightly unfinished (granted that may just be some retrospective bias). But On Gannon, the lack of shell shading darkens a lot of the pieces of armor(?) and brings out the darker red glow he gives off. Makes it feel a lot more sinister.
While I prefer the game without cel shading, it is also rather dark, like clouds for days.

The thing with the cel shading is that they used it to hide a lot of imperfections due to the switchs limitation.
