    The U model was made for mostly city deliveries with a lot of backing and the very short nose to meet the length limits of the day. I drove one in 84 in upstate N Y with the artic cold weather package with shutters and the thermostat controlled fan but with the 300plus with a 10 speed road ranger. Man did it pull

      @JRBUISEXCAVATING 4 года назад

      Thomas Ancas the u model was designed to meet the bridge weight limits of the day. The fact that it was short for city driving was a secondary benefit.

      Back before STAA the trucks were measured bumper to bumper
      55' in some states 60' in others.
      So 144" wb tandems with 90" short nose
      Conventionals and single bunk Cabovers
      Were the standard. So with a 45 ft trailer
      You only had 10 ft for truck. And gross weight was only 73,280 lbs. In ALLOT of the states.
      The federal bridge law didn't come into play till mid 80s early 90s with the 48' and 53' trailers.

    U models make great spotting trucks. Sitting on the far left side plus its so easy to jump in and out of. We used them and DM's for spot tractors on offroad logging jobs. We called them sidewinders!

    Believe it or not, in 2021 you can still order parts for these through any certified Mack dealer. My company has several that are still in service and we rebuild them from the ground up until they flat can't be rebuilt anymore. Absolute workhorses. Same for the old RD models.

    Verrrrry Coooool! What I love about those old Mack U and R models of that vintage, is that you could hook that baby of yours to a flatbed, dump, drop deck, or lowboy today and go make money with it today in 2014! In fact, I see some of these old trucks in the northeast still on the road doing just that daily. Love the garage full of Macks at the end of the video you're a lucky guy. Wish I had the cash and time I''d get a U, R, F, Cruiseliner, and Superliner!

    Can anybody tell me the advantage of those offset cabins?

    • @daltonbrink9924
      @daltonbrink9924 4 года назад +1

      Because the hood is so short, the back of the engine protrudes into the cab. They made the cab offset so the doghouse didn't take up the driver's side footwell.

    • @bertgrau9246
      @bertgrau9246 3 года назад +2

      They were intended for city delivery, when backing an old 96 inch wide trailer you could see the end of the trailer more easily than with an R model
      With the 102 wide trailers a little more difficult but still better than an R model
