Joaquin as humble as ever. I've never heard a speech like that before. Talking about the greatness of others shows your greatness. You gotta love this guy for who he is and what he does. His role as the Joker moved me so much and in my opinion he deserves all of the awards he's getting. Phenomenal.
same with River Phoenix, they were both so talented, wise and beautiful and sadly gone too soon, the cinematic world is richer because of their greatness
Talk about himself: he feels completely uncomfortable, serious, starts balancing, moving and touching his face, stutters and immediately change the topic. Talk about others: he feels completely comfortable, liberated, fluent in his speech, and even smiles and laugh. What a genuine human being.
Appreciating the nominees one by one. Humbling himself to recognize the actor who previously did his character. That would be the most genuine and epic acceptance speech in recent memory.
Almost every other Actor will go up there and speak about themself, God and their family. Joaquin doesn't thank anyone at his table when he stands up, he goes up and talks about other actors and then leaves. He doesn't talk about himself or anything. What a legend. So humble.
There's something about him that very few actors have. I don't know how to put it in words, because maybe there are no words. It's a feeling. He touches your soul.
I wanted Leo to win so badly for years and when he won I honestly didn't think his movie was all that but I was happy for him this time I think Joaquin deserves it and I actually think it's because of his performance not because it's about time but because he did such a good job.

Don't know how accurate the sources are from twitter, but one of a trivia tweets stated that the last 14 out of 15 SAGAwards for best actor has ended up winning an Oscar. I think Joaquin finally made it. Well deserved.
The only thing he said about himself was his homage to Ledger. But that's not the reason he deserves the Oscar. He only solidified his chances with this speech. The man was BRILLIANT in Joker. He went places many cannot go and he put the audience right there with him. I felt his pain. I felt his sadness. I see it in the many people today that have disabilities and mental illness. I have a son with Autism and I've seen how bad it can get and how beautiful it really can be. Thank you Joaquin for Joker, you did more than portray a psychotic clown, you showed the world that mental illness is real and you showed how real it is. God Bless.
This man delivered this speech. Then shows up literally hours later in his Tux to give water and some comfort to pigs before they are cruelly slaughtered. The epitome of class and a beautiful human.

I watched the Joker on a flight home three weeks ago and was enthralled. What a fabulous performance. I thought the movie would suck. Was I wrong. Congratulations Joaquin. You deserve the Oscar.
I think it sucked and a lot of people do agree with me. But the acting was amazing by pheonix. I do think it could’ve been better if their was more action parts
AK-47Archer P no everyone that said it wasn’t good understood it. But it could’ve been better if it showed both action and mental health on a different scale instead of soooo much mentally ill scenes
I'm not sure if it's dawned on anyone but all the roles his fellow nominees have been nominated for Joaquin has done all those types of roles. His Once Upon A Time is Inherent Vice. His Marriage Story is Her. His Rocketman is Walk The Line. His Ford v Ferrari is Gladiator or We Own The Night. He literally has played every role you can think of and then some. He now can add Joker to the list which was also played and won by his favorite actor Heath Ledger. What makes him even more amazing is he doesn't even see is own greatness. He just does the work and creates magic.
“I’m standing here on the shoulders of my favorite actor Heath Ledger” I actually got tears in my eyes. The only reason he was this good is because he tried to best to even match Heath Ledger. And I think he did so. He played joker the same but different and it worked so well. I think if he was still alive he would give him big hug
"...really I'm standing here on the shoulders of my favorite actor Heath Ledger" That is a great reference to Newton. Well said, Joaquin! and mostly well deserved! you rock!

What an amazing human being, uses his award speech to praise his fellow actors and he is vegan and a constant loud voice defending animals, you can't not love him.
You can tell Joaquin is too humble for his good. He mentioned in the past that he hates the idea of these actor film awards because it creates unnecessary competition. He respects and recognizes every actors in their own way that he doesn't want to accept these awards because of the idea of winning among them. So what he does is, he accepts this award on behalf of all the actors that he respects and recognizes by mentioning them in his speech... It's an action that he has thought over for a long period of time, thinking of ways to honor his fellow actors rather than absorbing the glory alone. Such an intelligent and humble man. He may not be perfect but definitely respectable not only as an actor but also as a human being.
Joaquin, Christian and Leo are all of the same age. And happens to be three of the best actors of their generation. We're so lucky and blessed to have these amazing talents to celebrate and enjoy.

"It's Leonardo, it's Leonardo. Who is this Leonardo?" haha. Love how honest and humble he is.
His humility is incredible. Notice how he heaped praise on other actors and ignored his own achievement. Such a wonderful man, actor and human being. Congratulations Joaquin, a well deserved accolade.

Siddhartha Mukherjee RIP
I cried a little bit when he said that. Not gonna lie :(
Joaquin as humble as ever. I've never heard a speech like that before. Talking about the greatness of others shows your greatness. You gotta love this guy for who he is and what he does. His role as the Joker moved me so much and in my opinion he deserves all of the awards he's getting. Phenomenal.

I think the only other time was when Michael Caine won his second oscar. Both speeches were humble and great.

same with River Phoenix, they were both so talented, wise and beautiful and sadly gone too soon, the cinematic world is richer because of their greatness

I noticed that too, he’s so happy for his buddy
It's exactly like portrayed in this recent movie with both of them! :D what a supportive friendship.
Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt, Leo Decaprio, Christian Bale, Adam Driver all in the same room that’s amazing

Al Pacino is the best.
Reading comments to find out who that other face was, he said Adam. Adam Driver, thank you. I recognised him. Can't recall from what. I only saw the Joker recently on a long haul flight. Wow, seats to myself, free drinks, and I kept taking his photo coming down those steps! That was iconic cinema.
Bale is a legend as are all the others. I love films 📽️🎬🎥 so many films still to watch
DiCaprio not decaprio
He cries when he talks about Heath Ledger. He turns his head when he finishes his speech just to hide his sadness. He is an a amazing actor but also he is an amazing human being. God bless him.
They were good friends before his passing, props to him man and rest now Heath you're in a better place

@skully yeah he is, he doesn't get too much credit for it though, but he is one of the greats, I hope he gets to prove that someday in a grandiose way

To call out everyone else and say Christian bale and how he gets into characters was mind blowing cause I feel Joaquin Phoenix does it better than most actors.
you've either only seen The Joker or you don't watch many Christian Bale movies. Which one do you want to be?
Neil Chronister seach about the machinist
Have you not seen American Psycho ?
Yeah Joaquin Phoenix definetely commits, but if there's someone who's better than him at really going into the role, it's Christian Bale.
Bale goes much deeper externally where Phoenix goes eternally
Adam Driver almost burst into tears .
Man, only Phoenix can just get up on the stage, advertise other nominees, praise them, and walk away.

The Academy snubed him three times in the past, this is his year.
And the Oscar goes to JOAQUIN PHOENIX.
The most beautiful, selfless and touching speech I've ever heard... This man is remarkable 👏👏👏
yes this is really fantastic speech ever
This is one of the absolute best speeches of all time. So humble and gracious. Love that Joaquin Phoenix.
God Bless.
Hella underrated comment

I watched the Joker on a flight home three weeks ago and was enthralled. What a fabulous performance. I thought the movie would suck. Was I wrong. Congratulations Joaquin. You deserve the Oscar.
I think it sucked and a lot of people do agree with me. But the acting was amazing by pheonix. I do think it could’ve been better if their was more action parts
robert kasokeo people don’t understand it. It’s about mental health. The movie was amazing but Joaquin made the movie 100000000% better
AK-47Archer P no everyone that said it wasn’t good understood it. But it could’ve been better if it showed both action and mental health on a different scale instead of soooo much mentally ill scenes
robert kasokeo joker wasn’t an action movie. More action would have made the movie worse.

Joker giving a tribute to Joker. I felt that on different levels.
100% truth!
I agree
thats why he's one of the best working actors today
His once upon a time was inherent vice? Why..because they took place in California during the late 60’s/early 70’s?
Some odd comparisons in there but sure, Joaquin has been putting in great performances for decades.
He’s literally the opposite of the Joker.
Kind, caring and someone you should look up too

I actually got tears in my eyes. The only reason he was this good is because he tried to best to even match Heath Ledger. And I think he did so. He played joker the same but different and it worked so well. I think if he was still alive he would give him big hug
He was great way before the Joker, he doesn't need to show he's better than someone else.

I just fu..king love Joaquin! He is too humble and so not fitting in the whole hollywood's style of fame that he feels even embarrassed to stand there in front of everyone. So humble that his whole speech was about nominee's colleges, not a single word about himself.
What an amazing human being, uses his award speech to praise his fellow actors and he is vegan and a constant loud voice defending animals, you can't not love him.
Indeed. we need more people like him!
My mom says other wise lol.
He just showed everyone that "You rise by lifting others"
