  • Flying the P-38J first on Kota and then on Combat Box. I am surprised how much I like the Lightning in the current planeset. I kinda expected that the aircraft will have a hard time competing against the K-4 and D-9. And while beeing slower, the boosted ailerons, high altitude performance, decent climbrate, armament package making it a viable choice in a team. Alone it will be difficult since the aircraft has quite large blind spots below, making the aircraft vulnerable from below.

    The more I look at the P-38, the more it looks like some crazy alt-reality design out of Crimson Skies, or some science fiction comic.

    I was excited to get this plane but I like shooting it more than flying it. Hitting it with some 30mm and watching the two booms come apart and flutter to the ground is very satisfying.

    I haven’t flown IL2 in 10 years but I logged many hours in the J and the L. The J suffered from the compression problems as the real version. When flying the L with its airbrake I could hold my own against all comers. Out climb any axis plane, yes the K4 too. Strategic use of the air brake you could df a Zero.

    That's interesting with the mirror during taxi, but I guess it makes sense. On the ground the 38 is nose high but if iirc its slightly nose down in level flight.

    I was always reading stories about the legendary p38. When I tried it on Sims, the slow roll rate, and control lockup in a dive really dissapointed me. I switched to P47, or F4U, they fit my play style much better.

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  4 года назад

      the roll rate of the J is really good since the aircraft comes with boosted ailerons, but despite some dive brakes its still not a good diving aircraft. Lots of shaking and elevator lock up.

    • @sonicapollo
      @sonicapollo 3 года назад

      With dual throttles you can greatly increase the roll rate by aggressively pulling the power back on the engine you want to roll towards and then putting it back in.

    • @zOMGREI
      @zOMGREI 3 года назад

      @@sonicapollo This is terrible advice. Cutting the throttle on one engine just creates a ton of drag and instability, and it's not even going to accomplish much in the way of boosting your roll rate in something like a P-38 with counter-rotating propellers. This is an absolute last resort move, because all you're really doing is dumping a ton of energy for very little gain.

    • @sonicapollo
      @sonicapollo 3 года назад

      @@zOMGREI Look at the direction the props spin. (excluding the prototype) It is opposite to most aircraft. Ergo, each engine acts like a "critical engine". A quick pull on the power and back takes very little time. It's basically like an aileron assisted Vmc demo. This increases roll rate. Go try it for yourself.

    • @zOMGREI
      @zOMGREI 3 года назад

      @@sonicapollo I never said it wouldn't increase your roll rate, it will, just not by a particularly useful amount. Even on a standard twin you get more yaw than roll out of cutting the throttle on one side. The core issue isn't even the minor increase in roll rate---it's the fact that you're trading a massive amount of energy for a small, very temporary boost to your roll rate. Yes, on it's face this may not seem like a bad idea, but unless this is a 1v1 against an absolute moron, you're just going to get yourself killed. New F-14 pilots in DCS fall into this same kind of trap with a similar kind of poor energy trade: they go full Top Gun, throw the air brake out, and go vertical to force an overshoot. They either end up crashing, or they miss their teeny tiny window to exploit the overshoot and promptly get killed by another enemy, or even by the one that they tried this reversal on while they struggle to gain enough energy to maneuver again.
      It's just not good advice to tell people to attempt things like this without making the low odds of success and the heavy consequences for failure clear. Plus, the roll rate isn't even that bad on the 38. You're better off continuing to maneuver with both engines rather than taking a huge gamble on a small boost in roll against a plane that's likely able to either outroll you anyway (or just outrun you afterwards).
      Edit: Alternatively, just use rudder inputs to boost your roll. Same result with a lot less risk.

    I see you figured out some stable graphics settings! Care to share?

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  5 лет назад +3

      Well I identified that the graphic cards get spikes of demand very suddenly, while the card is running at full power to get the max amount of frames. So I capped my FPS to 60, disabled some graphic options (Shadows to high, SSAO off) so my GPU has some breath left to meet those sudden demands. Now its mostly smooth.

    Is the p38 a good heavy fighter? And if so how should you use it

    • @SheriffsSimShack
      @SheriffsSimShack  5 лет назад +3

      I wouldn't even say its a heavy fighter, it is basically a normal fighter which happens to have 2 engines. So considering the visibility downwards, I would recommend to use it as a attacker with bombs or has a high altitude interceptor with a wingman. The Turbocharged engines work very well against the germans very high.
