- The point isn't that we should never try to change the world.The point is that we shouldn't want to change the world for the sake of feeling significant by getting our name in the history books. Change does not always mean improvement, and we must be careful when we say we want to change the world, and ensure that it's for the right reason.

I disagree partially. There still lefts the thing: Are all changes an improvement? How do you know what is good/right? We are all just people, humans. And what about other people? They can think something different is good/right.

For a long time now the thought of dying haunted me and still kinda does. I'm not a religious person and an afterlife isn't certain. I figured that if I am to die one day I want to be remembered and not slip thought time like nothing. I wanted to write history in a way. to forge my name within it so it would be impossible to for get forget me...i wanted to impact the world so greatly. But this video made me think. I want to focus on life. i can only live once and when you begin to understand it, living is so much more Beautiful. Every person i met, even if it was for a little while will be changed because of me and hopefully it'll be for the better. things, places, names, and even where a rose will grow will be impacted because of me simply existing.

Reality made me realise I can't change the world. Some years ago I've also had this dream/desire to change it until I travelled abroad, alone, for the first time. It was exciting but very scary to be alone in a foreign country. And there were so many people living out their lives not knowing who I was or that I even exist. That's when I realised how foolish and futile this dream was. You want to change the world? Start with yourself.

What he talks about is an example of an individual who wants to change the world because he wants to make a difference, not necesarry to actually change it to a better direction. He references this multiple times. What these people forget is, their impact is way more important than themselves. It is never about you, but what you represent, and the change you make. That is why one should want to change the world truly, if he wants not to make the impact, but the impact to be made.

"Changing the world" is an idea that can only be generated and cultivated in a naive, self-important, self-righteous mind. The world doesn't change; it doesn't have the capacity to change; as it has always been, it always will be.
What a person can really control and work on is the pursuit of being a better person and a better human being, striving to always be better than his former self; work on personal flaws and weaknesses, and enhance strengths and abilities. Be a better person so that the world you live in become a slightly better world; and then maybe when the day comes when you have stored enough mental, emotional and personal leverage over your own life you'll plant a seed, generate an idea, or even come up with an invention, in the right place at the exact right time, that will make the world really become a better place at an exponential rate.

I love this. Says so much of what got me out of promoting politics. At a certain point I hit the limits of what I understood about the world, and the Butterfly Effect taught me consequences are not just immediate and intuitive, but often random and chaotic long term.

@@longschlong846 yes it is no longer important. It is something I devote a small amount of energy towards, in terms of voting. But besides that I try to avoid it.

Everybody wants to do something big and make meaningful change. They want to leave some kind of legacy. Do something that impacts a large number of people. Something that says to the world and everyone living in it, "Hey, I exist and it's important that I exist!" They get inspired by people who have done it before and aim to be just as good and effective as them.
However, what I think a lot of people misunderstand is that changing the world - doing good or leaving a legacy - should not be an end goal. You should never do good just for the sake of making yourself look good, and you shouldn't invoke change just for the purpose of saying that you did.
The biggest world changing people and events were actually very rarely intentional or expected and not done by just one person. They came from the result of people doing what they love the best that they can with the help of friends and working everyday to be better. If you really want to improve the world in some way, start here.
Your goal in life should not be to be just like the people who inspire you. Instead your goal should be a person who can inspire others.
I appreciate this, it reflects my own thoughts on this so well. I know that I, as a single person cannot, or rather shouldn't have the power to make great change. But I have done so indirectly, through influence and interacting with so many others that I have likely changed the courses of hundreds of lives big and small in ways I won't ever see

Why? Not a hostile question, but what you said seems a bit paradoxical to my mind, by changing society you eventually inevitably change the world and by changing the world I'd argue you can also change the society on it. I'd like to hear your perspective!
World as in literally? The earth? A high in mass, solid object made of minerals and rocks from the universe, that just so happened to be in the right place and right time, a perfect position in space time that an environment that was produced was able to hold create a natural system of life we call nature and create different forms of life with only one species that was given the most powerful tool that would change the course for its species through generations, a conscience.
I thought "society" was a more of a local thing, and "world" meant everything that involves humans.
Some actions benefit one society while harming another. That's why it's more important to look at the full impact on the world.
i think by "world" he means mankind and all of humans and the entire way we live our life and our cultures, etc. and by "society" he means people, civilization, communities, cities, etc.
Humanity should be Constantly trying to make strides to minimize suffering.
Humanity has constantly been trying for as long as humanity has existed, and yet here we are, still in the thralls of suffering. That does not mean we should give up, but perhaps our suffering has some root in our feeling that we constantly need to change everything, and that nothing is ever ok as is. Maybe the source of suffering is some amount indifferent to our attempts to fill the world with new companies, new products, new technologies, new ideologies, new systems and so on. Every case of change is unique and not all cases are bad, nor all good. Change is not automatically improvement. Improvement is automatically improvement. And there are definitely some things that are clear in terms of certain improvement, but not many.

Yes, agreed. Essentially everything appears to progress overtime. Things become more advanced as a a result of subsequent increased knowledge and technological capabilities, which combine to progress how life is lived. Today will certainly seem primitive to the future, but it's not clear that because of that, today will be worse or better than the future. It's not that we shouldn't change the world, because we will. It's that we shouldn't approach everything like it needs to have some massive, ultimate change and we can only feel important if it does.
Life for my working class grandparents was a living hell the rights i enjoy to day they fought for and won things did not just magically improve ihope and pray my children and theirs will continue the fight until we end injustice most people in the west who adopt eastern belief systems come from relative privilege try spending your life down a coal mine or in a poormarginalised comunity and perhaps your perspective on the working class inter generational fight for change would be different different

We all want to change the world to one that will provide all what we desire, that includes no pain, no suffering, no sadness, no death.. yet that is impossible right now.. the world has an end, people may hurt each other and work and effort is always needed to deserve prizes or to feel achievement.. 😅

All the images you showed were people who wanted $$$$ and fame. Very few people actually want to change the world. And those who genuinely do, often start with themselves.

I Usually love you're videos but I am going to disagree with this one...hear me out.
The first thing I'd like to ask is "who" are the people who can even think of changing the world? I would argue that the only people with the capacity to seriously think on and reflect on this question are those for whom there is some room to breathe in their daily lives. I can seriosuly reflect on this question, so can you amd many others viewing this channel. Those who have too much going on, who have to work 2, 3 or even more jobs are consumed daily by the immediate need to support families, pay off debt, pay bills etc. Chaning the world can be a thought, but their lives demand immediate action for survival and so this thought would not likely be entertained for too long. The answer to this question then, is filtered through the experiences of those capable of asking and thinking it through. The answer CAN be " I'll decide to appreciate the world because improvement is subjective" for US who don't have much at stake this is a reasonable answer. For many living on the margins though, there are REAL material consequences to the systems that shape the ways people can live in this country (the US). Poverty, for example, is a trap that many people, hard as they may try, may never escape and for no lack of working hard. If you were born into poverty, you will most likely have a poor education leading to poor future prospects. That's not to say people don't get out, but not everyone is so lucky. Being poor also means you have less options when it comes to food and less access to the prohibitively expessive healthcare system. All of these factors weigh heavily on the trajectory of any life under them.
I conclude two things.
First, that even if we can't always predict the full scope and breadth of the impacts of our efforts we must nonetheless try because,
people are suffering, many people live objectively awful lives with few resources and constant stress. They may never be in a position to decide "I'll change the world today". And when WE ask that question to ourselves we must also answer "change or improve for who?" The Irony is that this bit of wisdom changes the world by virtue of its persuasive power to affect change in others...leading to reduced sense of action and urgency to many of the problems we face today, worsening the situation. And my answer is this: To help improve the lives of others will also improve the lives we ourselves live as those who are helped can become contributing members of society once liberated from crushing poverty and with the ability to actually think of other things than work, money for bills food and the doctor.
i'd rather die knowing that i was able to affect and make an impact on someone in my life than change the world. first of all, changing the world is a big goal and i'm lazy, okay. when i make my "impact" it'd probably be in the form of a book, or through music. sure, it may not reach all of humanity or maybe not even a large audience/demographic, but if i was able to affect every or anyone who sees my work, that's fine with me.
I still feel insignificant to the world as a whole, but I personally feel significant as an individual.
Lots of people make good points here. My opinion is, that we all know we are part of something much bigger than us, like our planet or a whole universe. Everyone wants to know what they should do in their life and things like that. We all look for our place in society, job, world ... so we should try to fit in rather than stand out. The question is: Is that what we do?
I strongly disagree with this. The message I got from this video is "The world is a mess but don't do anything, just enjoy it as it is and live a happy life". This video basically says we shouldn't dedicate our life in changing the world, and we should focus on ourselves instead. But who is going to make the world a better and safer place if no one takes action and everyone just watches the world die?

I think it's important that instead of thinking we shouldn't change the world, we should know that we don't always need to. Considering we have changed the world in so many ways already that have resulted in negative effects on us and our planet, we SHOULD change the world and make it better again for good. However, this change would have to be huge and it would take the effort of many rather than just one person. This video should have been more about why we CAN and SHOULD change the world, but why we shouldn't try doing it alone.

Changing the world for changing the world is the same as finding hapiness for being happy : it doesn't go well. The journey, to be as great as it can, needs to be done without having an end in mind (at least not doing it for the end only). It's all about living in the moment and realizing that you can have hopes and still being happy if things don't go has planned. Because, just by doing our thing, we already change the world one baby step at a time.
I actually disagree with this one. Try and change it. It ultimately doesn't matter what you do anyway. Change, don't change, whatever, just do it and see what happens. I encourage what one may perceive as a positive change because their intent is noble and I believe being as ethical as you can makes life run smoother, but if it winds up being negative then so be it, ya know? At least we tried and one day there won't be day so let's try anyway.

You can’t change the world but you can help the human race to succeed in what those old explorers were always looking for. Even though you don’t know a solution for everyone, don’t let you ego take over and only find happiness with in your life. We will find a solution with conscious humans, as long as the old fashioned society is changed and the people are ready to understand it. Peace and harmony in the world, on the hole planet earth, will give us a feeling we never felt before. We might never live in that time because it’s takes time for big changes, but being a part of it is just one of your game rules in your human game. So maybe try going with the plan and things turn out to be quite nice.

I can feel this video so much. When I was growing back in Haiti as a kid I could not look at an adult straight in the eyes and I had to use honorable title to address them such as Mr or Miss, uncle, or granny and any of them could punish me for a wrongdoing, however psychologists today say it is wrong to punish the kids while hurting society there were fewer bad sons in the old days because if you stole or sold drug your family would reject you so the neighborhood contrary today bad guys get the nicest cheeks, family and friends are being very supportive so we changed the world for worst!

sorry, dear, i've already achieved everything you've been talking about. i'm happy. there's undimmed curiosity in me. for most people i'm weird, for those who know me better, i'm somewhat special among special. i'm kinda proud and ambitious and i might be somewhat upset with myself if i don't manage to do something, it doesn't really have to be saviing the world. rolling those dice is a fun thing to do and i think that's enough. we have no idea about possible aftermath of our actions and those shouldn't be judged taking into perspective the knowledge we didn't have while making decisions. but we often may predict general direction of those consquences. definetelly not enough to tell what evil it may cause in 100 years, but we can predict direct impact and a few major steps afterwards, sometimes. but as i said - most of all it's fun and challenging. and may impact lives of ourselves and people around us in the way we want... for some time, at lest. and no idea what happens next, it doesn't have to be bad, it's generally neutral on avarage if we take into account all of the consequences. soo why not?
let us not try to inhibit the process of reconfiguration. change often emerged exactly from such dreams
