Fun Fact. If it wasn't for the electronic starting system Lyle's loses this race.
Traditionally races where started with a starting pistol. The sound of the shot tells the sprinters to begin.
But sound moves relatively slowly, atleast compared to light which is how final times are measured.
So it takes 0.0035s for the sound wave to cross each lane.
Lyles & Kishane where 3 lanes apart, so Lyles would've heard the starting pistol 0.0105s after Kishane.
But Lyles only beat Kishane by 0.005s and so if this race had been started using the traditional method Lyles loses through no fault of his own.
That's how ludicrously close this was, that the speed of sound itself could've made the difference.
Thankfully the Olympics switched to an electronic starting system in 2012, with an electronic pistol wired to 8 individual speakers behind each athlete.
It really goes to show how every little detail must be considered for events like this, even the slightest thing can end up biasing the race.
Congrats to Noah Lyles, what a race.

i love noah and hes getting too much hate for this race, but this is an exaggeration lol... lyles had a last 40m of 3.35 here and a first 60 of 6.44, and while he didnt have the greatest start, his best ever 60m is only 6.43 as well... keep in mind this is the fastest track we've ever seen, so even assuming everything goes perfectly for him, his best possible first 60m would probably be around 6.3 high with a 3.3 low-mid close, putting him around 9.7 low at best or maybe 9.6 if he makes big improvements, nowhere near bolts still

FIVE milliseconds is not a fair criterion on which to base the outcome of a race. If a runner starts up to 100 milliseconds faster than the rest of the field, the start is still deemed to be correct and valid, and if he then wins the race by only 5 milliseconds, he won the race because he anticipated the start of the race better than the other runners, and not because he ran faster than the other runner during the race.. so, I stay with statement that there should have been two gold medals, and no silver medal awarded..🤷🏼‍♂️
