Rev Dowd,Thank u from the bottom of my heart for this message.I was married for 34 years to a wonderful Baptist fundamentalist & I went along because I knew no other faith path.I knew SOMETHING was very real in the divine experience, but I still couldn't reconcile fundamentalism w my intellect or inner knowing. We ended up divorcing ultimately because of differing world views.Thank u, thank u, for your mission to share this; I only wish I'd had this earlier. But I will pass this on to my children.
Right a question with no answer... And that means seeking an answer is just a mental game. Asking WHY implies that there is an ultimate meaning, which is philosophically impossible. In the end it all JUST IS.
Brilliant. I'm not religious. There is so much in this. I think my summation of this sermon and life is nothing is unnatural we are nature trying to comprehend itself. Also the Tanakh/Bible/Qur'an/Upanishads/Pāli Tipitaka/ etc. are false idols written by humans.
There are parts of Asia where the metaphor of 'sheep' was replaced by 'pigs'. So you had a pig of god. I agree with the idea of science existing through the skeptic methodology. We should all be each others' shepherd.
Ok, I get you. Believe me, I'm an atheist. But...I've learned to at least listen to people like Dowd. He's not fundamentalist in any way whatsoever. There are certain philosophical questions that drive us. The big existential one is "Why is there ANYTHING instead of NOTHING?" It's a question with no answer, a big mystery. Not knowing the answer is ok. But the drive to know...is fascinating to delve in to. Personally, psilocybin mushrooms played a huge role in opening me up to those questions.
One, what's wrong with mental games? Also, you seem to be saying that because we don't PRESENTLY know the answer, we ought to just give up and say "it is what it is." Just because there isn't an answer now, doesn't mean there isn't an answer. I mean, practically speaking, of COURSE there is an answer. The very fact that there IS an answer to the single most important question there is....means that inquiring into that question is the most important thing we can do. How is that not worthwhile?
I like his analogy of 'apples growing out of an apple tree.' He must be a student of Alan Watts, as that is the very analogy Watts used many times. Alan Watts is definitely someone who's ideas were way ahead of their time. Anyone who likes this video, I highly recommend you look into Alan Watts. He was a philosopher who, sadly, died in the 1970s...but not before disseminating a truly profound existential philosophy. He was rooted in Taoism, but his message was truly perennial in nature.
scary? Way more people are begining to come to views very similar to Dowd's. Societal evolution is a great thing. It's high time we stop taking 2,000 year old dogma as absolute truth. It's time we use our minds and hearts to understand the way the world IS...not the way we believe it is. There's nothing scary about this...unless you're ignorant to the reasoning and evidence. All fear is born of ignorance. Awareness is liberating and the source of love.
One more thing.... Isn't this sort of religion refreshing? I sure find it more worthwhile than the ramblings of 99% of pastors and preachers and "holy" men around the world. The sort of "preaching" Dowd does is humble in that he does not claim to know something he doesn't know. Most all preachers do the opposite. They spout out BS that they couldn't possibly know...and then slap the label "faith" on it. If all religion was like this video, the world would be in much better shape.
