STEREOTYPING ARABS - A Timeless Hollywood Tradition

- Arabs suffer from a long and systematic stereotyping from the West. From the Orientalist movement of the 18th century till today, Western perceptions of Arabs and by extension Muslims, are based on what they have been conditioned to believe through the media be it in the form of literature, art, and more recently, movies and television, the tribal sheikh, the belly dancing concubine, the filthy rich oil billionaire and the token terrorist. How has this impacted how Arabs and Muslims in today's world? Arabs still do not attain the level of humanity equal to the West. Westerners still feel entitled to the possessions of Arabs be them natural resources or lands and are still treated as uncivilised and educated.
Hollywood has had a significant role in creating this reality. Ever since the late 19th century , the Western film industry has promoted negative interpretations of Arab societies, belief systems and their intentions for life. This video will take you on an analysis of the history of such a strategic process of dehumanising Arabs and Muslims.

It’s funny to notice how Aladdin's film mixed and mistaked absurdly between Arabic, Persian, Ottoman and Indian cultures, and this appears clearly in many things such as wears, elephants and music etc.. everything in Aladdin doesn’t resprent Arabian culture well
Agreed. It's a hodge podge of stereotypes blended into one. But it's still effective in misrepresenting a people, by misrepresenting a people.
Because to our enemies, we're all the same: Asiatic barbarian hoards.
I totally agree! The middle-east is seen as this huge monolith, that all the cultures which inhabits it are the same, but that’s not the case at all. A mazandari person (from northern iran) will have a completelly different culture, food, music, and overall appearence than a jordanian person will, for instance.

They don't call those stereotypical racist movies
" anti semitic "
What a surprise !
Exactly, selective judgment it is!
Antisemite was a term coined by a German in the 19th century specifically to distinguish hating Jews for ethnic reasons rather than religious. He wanted to clarify this as a “scientific” hatred rather than the more traditional religious hatred because he was a secular man that didn’t want to be lumped in with Catholics. It was never intended for Arabs or any other semitic group.

thanks man im arab and when i first saw how Hollywood shows us i was very furious
Thousands of movies that simply just hate on us and with lies beyond belief my
Especially on woman like i just couldn't understand woman are so honored here especially in Syria Egypt Saudi Qatar yeman oman
A story we are taught at a young age is how when Muhammads followers seeked asylum in another city the people there that didn't want them told the cities judge how Muhammed believed that the woman should be honored more than any other and there mistakes should be excused the judge asked the men why do you think that
The muslim men asked him who carried you in the belly for 9 months
Who taught you to talk walk and eat
Who do you go to When in fear
He answered my mom
The Muslim man then asked are you saying with all your heart that the person that does all this without anything to gain shouldn't be honored (even if you don't believe the story they teach it to us and the Arabs go by it)
And Muslim women at Muhammads time could work on land teach had equal rights
My whole childhood and even as i grew up i felt jealous of how much woman have so much freedom of what they can do
Seriously when i first saw the American preceptive i was very surprised
One question why do you respect your mom and honer her but not the mom leaving down the street
Please whenever you see arabs in movies remember that the cia sees the script and can edit it at well because they fund sooo many movies
Random fact a 1400 years ago all forms of slavery where banned by islam and every body was free 1200 years later in America it was still normal
You may ask yourself how would you feel if you lived at the time well nothing cause it was normal
Just like 10000 killed children
And more than 300000 living in an area of Manhattan with random adults because like most are either trying to defend gaza or there simply dead
And there starving and its normal somehow and its more important to talk about some 20 year old protesters i. Collages even though 90% of students are with the protests
İts simply dumb to talk about 20 year olds not going to school for a week or so
And forget 2 million people 40000 already dead
Hundred thousand expected to die of starvation if food is not supplied
Thank you And for your elaborate commentary and insight. Yes Islam is a religion of peace and justice. It is a conservative faith as are all faiths. Islam in its history was extremely tolerant especially when compared to nations that today are supposedly the more civilised. The newest stereotype that should be added to the list is the "Good Muslim." A Muslim that sleeps around with many people, sometimes drinks alcohol, usually has a grudge against oppressive parents/family/culture. As a Muslim Half Arab half amazigh from Algeria 🇩🇿 thank you for talking about this . I’m a fan of history and when I look into old paintings of our ancestors by European painters they always portray women in sexual positions with their bodies half naked and men in weird colors .
It’s a way to mock them and fantasize about them it’s also straight racism and antisemitism and this have been going on for decades with the arrival of animation and all , the Muslim kings were once the most powerful and respected in the world and I think Europeans wanted to hide their weaknesses and defeats by defamation of the great Arab and Muslim history , there’s also Arab movies where they depict western people like women being stupid and uneducated but as Muslims majority of 2 billion are very religious people so it doesn’t affect us at all and some people might talk about Arab slavery , yes there was Arab slavery but it disappeared with arrival of Islam so it’s not fair to link it to more close centuries
Thank you lili13. I appreciate your kind words and your commentary is very comprehensive and well thought out. As for Arab slavery, I am afraid that it wasn't totally wiped out with the enlightenment of Islam, actually there were many of the Arab nations that only outlawed slavery well into the 20th century.
@@thekandarichronicles we can’t compare this « slavery » to the European one. Sure there were excesses especially as time went on. But slaves were actually servants more than slaves in the Muslim world. Mamluks are a great example, they were once slaves but then became leaders of the Islamic civilization.

Hello Murad. No randomness whatsoever. It is a common thread that can only be intentional.
A Hollywood origin story? Hmmmm. Will have to contemplate that one.
I really am blessed with your kind and wonderful words of encouragement and support.
This is really informative and covers so much in such a short time. I grew up as a white homeschooled conservative and when I was a kid, I never thought twice about being steeped in this propaganda because I didn't know it was propaganda - I didn't even know many people outside my family and homeschool group. But I'll tell you what nothing woke me up faster than going to college and having my career and seeing for the first time that there were friends and colleagues around me who bore the brunt of this stereotyping and had been having to watch it all, while I was growing up blissfully unaware of this massive problem. I hope that because people have more access to information these days, these stereotypes are called out more and more for what they are until film and TV writers are finally embarrassed out of perpetuating them. Until then I'm going to share stuff like this with all my friends and keep calling it out myself.
BTW Tareq, your subtle and yet very powerful use of music in your videos is of perfection!

As i do agree with you, i still have to say that Arab media also approaches Western culture in a 'sexualised & fantasised' way.
An example of this is Adel Imam's movies, & how in almost each of his movies there is a "Foreign European girl" who is hot & sexy, usually depicted as slightly stupid but given a chance eventually.
This is a great point and a fair observation.
I dont disagree with you. Misrepresentation is bad across the board. But Adel Imam's or any local media doesn't represent a global voice and impression making machine like that of Western media. Even our media duplicates what Hollywood depicts, news wise or in telling a story.

Thank you Mohamed for your amazing commentary and kind words. Yes we should stand up to this type of classification that is by intention harmful and inhumane.
It is also intriguing that in this vilification campaign, most of these stereotypical Arab characters are played by either Israeli or Jewish actors like Sacha Baron Cohen, Eugene Levy, Oded Fehr, Ofer Samra.

As always thanks, this is a topic that needed to be discussed and for long on my mind. We are seeing references made to the 60s movie "Exodus" and how it helped shaped the mind of generations; I believe even the Israeli politicians at the time said it's worth it's weight in gold, now add 60 more years of layer upon layer of that. It's the stigma that this generation needs to destroy, even though many don't quite yet know they have it yet. The movie Kingdom of Heaven was I believe the first time that I saw a movie where the dignity of the opposing sides was held at the same level and was very refreshing.
You're absolutley right on the movie Kingdom of Heaven, portraying a respect of other people civilisations and religions by the Muslims and especially Salah ElDin.
There are many instances where we see how Hollywood either diminishes Arabs or reinforces a Zionist narrative. Yes Exodus was one but many others such as Ben Hur and Cast an Iron Shadow speak of the plight of Jews in history that follow that same Zionist narrative. Many many more are out there.
Thanks Hakukuze7947 for your amazing input.

Check also the introduction of "the sorcerer", "To live and die in L.A", and "the exorcist"(Irak, Arab facing the statue and standing the same way + the crossing of the wings of the statue and the crossing of the keffieh"
All this will help you to understand the pattern

I'm Colombian and I live in south America, I don't watch Netflix because I both consider it a waste of time and money, but I hired it for my "nurse friend " who was taking care of me because I broke my knee, while I was recovering from surgery.
I also do not like it because in Latin America, it has honestly a BUNCH of shows narco related where Colombians are seen as just people that belong to a drug cartel and nothing else, oh yes, they portrait women as sexual workers or evil bitch*s that want to take anyone's money. It's disgusting. So I can definitely relate with that misrepresentation Arabs also have and I hate it.
Anyways, while I was going thru the Netflix catalogue to see if something could catch my attention outside those drug cartel shows that people love and that I hate including breaking bad, I searched for Palestinians, Palestine, nothing. Just a documentary from 2015 that I obviously watched, then googled Israel and there were a bunch of shows and oh yes, including some that had Palestinians portrayed as t3rrorists. I was as disgusted as when I look at those representations from my own nationality that make me feel sick.
I also repeated the same formula with "Jewish" "Jews" and "Arabs" "Arabic"... You can imagine how the search resulted. 🙄
And tbh it is SO HARD to be able to jump the fence and find something where u can actually start unlearning and relearning something outside orientalism!! Like even if you want to it's hard if you don't know anyone from Arab countries or Arabic in general, for example I have looked for years playlists of traditional music from Arab countries and the only thing I have found are videos were the same monotonic instruments playing in a very computerized and that keep being Boring for hours and hours.
I recently found the good trace and finally RUclips started recommending me things outside that mold. I was finally on the right track.
It took me a while to figure out how to search for the good stuff.
Anyways, the western americanized media influence makes it harder for us to learn about the middle east in the proper way. But we will get there. The world is getting there.

Moses was sent to all three elements of this 'unholy trinity'.
40:24 To Pharaoh, Haman and Qaroon, but they said, 'A spellbinding liar he is.' [28:6,29:39. Saahir = Magician = Trickster = An eloquent, spellbinding speaker =A deceitful liar = One who stuns the intellect. Pharaoh, Haman and Qaroon (Korah) are the archetypes of tyranny, priesthood and wealth respectively. It is important to note from this verse that Moses was sent to all three elements of this 'unholy trinity'. From this infers the mutual dependence of the forces of tyranny, priesthood and hoarding. These three elements have always worked in concert against the forces of justice and equity. Haman was the chief priest as well as chief of Pharaoh's armies. The wealthy Qaroon belonged to the Israelites, the people of Moses. But he was Pharaoh's slave-driver. He represents Capitalism, pursuit of wealth with its associated inequities]

Abdalaziz, thank you so much for sharing scripture that relates to the topic of stereotyping and misrepresentation that happened and is happening today and in identifying the culprits of such deceit.
That's very true in the west and I totally agree, but in the southeast, especially where I'm from, the conditioning of arab stereotypes are literally from word of mouth either from maids that tell nightmare stories of them being beaten or getting SA'd and from nightworkers that say arab tourists are the ones that readily book a woman for months in a "temporary marriage contract". Also the horrible abuse that mostly muslim south asian workers endure in arab countries doesn't help arabs in their image.
I'm sure these aren't the norm and it's a minority case, but it's not so small that a stereotype can stem from it. Maybe arabs need some "stereotyping" help as well? Especially towards south and southeast asians.
There is no society that is void of people that are immoral or unethical. I will not defend those who act in such a way even if they are Arabs. Arabs and Muslims definitely need to rediscover humility and the fundamental practice that we are all the same, brothers and sisters in life.
Thank you for your thoughts and observations.
I think more people are coming to understand how the media depicts certain groups as heroes or villains to justify national interests. For example, depicting the Afghans as heroes when they fought against Soviets, and as villains when they started resisting NATO.
Nowadays, it seems the strategy is to appropriate the stories of the victims, and retell it to either feign sympathy or justify the cruelty of previous actions. Dune 2 is the most recent example which comes to mind, particularly when the protagonist (ironically played by a French actor) shouts out “Long live the fighters!”… which is apparently inspired by the Algerian war-cry “Long live the martyrs!” (said by the victorious independence fighters after kicking out the French). Sadly, the Dune franchise is full of these things.
But I wouldn't be too concerned about kid movies like Aladdin. Kids are innocent and won't think twice about funny animations.
Related anecdote: I used to watch a show called "Babar the Elephant", which was about an elephant king who moved to the city and returned to reclaim his throne and improve his kingdom. As a kid, I just enjoyed the story. When I reached 11th grade, my teacher told me it was a racist story about an African being "civilized" after living in European society, and bringing that "civilization" back to his homeland. Thinking back on it, I can kind of see it. But as a kid, I never saw it that way. Even as an adult, I would never have seen it like that if my teacher didn't bring it up. And this is coming from a Pakistani who, in theory, should be aware of subtle neo-colonialism.
It's not really about innocence for kids. It's about conditioning through repetition that someone who is different to you will automatically have a fear factor associated with them. Repetition is key as well as the quantity of elements that can affect one's mindset. Dont forget also it's about the context you live in. Parents come into play and the fact that you I assume weren't living in a Western society where you might feel privileged and superior to others.
Thank you for the great input and really enjoyed reading your thoughts.
@@thekandarichronicles Yeah that can true too. Subconscious conditioning.

Yes indeed, Tareq has always put out top notch work, he has perfected this one and quite eloquently states his case point. Public Service Announcement material here, this message is seriously needed in today's world... Sad painful truth.

Sacha Baron Cohen movies for example… what a Cohencidence, right?
Exactly. He does feature in the video's imagery.
Great work
Don't also forget the awful Stereotypes and tropes of Africans in both Hollywood and US or western media
For sure, there is more to the stereotyping of people coming out of the West.
Thank you for your wonderful support.
ur videos ive watch thus far are all golden
Appreciate that, sincerely. Thanks PageUp202.
Thank you for using words like anti-Semitism correctly. We need to bring back the real meaning
Thank you Tanura5830 for your support and commentary. Even words need to be correctly defined to rectify a narrative that is misleading.
Great thought process, great and clever organization of ideas and even a better production, amazing work.

Ironically through the movie “America: World Police” mocks hollywoods portrayal of muslims being generic bad guys along with the US being no-fault do gooders.
I think there are moments that Hollywood attempts to rectify its path. I dont think it's a mass movement but rare cases of "misguided" idealists (as perceived from the common Hollywood crowd). But these cases are few and far in between.
Wow... this makes me very glad I had real people that I met as examples before any dumb ideas could form. Though, being from New Zealand we had a decent mix of people in my neighbourhood as I grew up. Though the first Arab I met was a physical therapist who had once been a Bedouin.
You're lucky and even luckier to meet an amazing first Arab, therapist who was a Bedouin. Simply cool.
Must admit I was propagandarised from Australia, my husband and two small children were trawling for prawns in the red sea in 1992 and will admit I was very apprehensive until I met so many good people from all over the Arab world
Hi Petrea. What a wonderful experience and thank you for sharing such a personal one. You know what you went through is the base human condition. It should be the norm. We all have this in us. To learn and to be kind to everyone we come across and avoid the judgment prior to any real tangible experience. Made me smile!
Brilliant video, keep' em coming, liked and subscribed
Amazing comment and support. Hopefully will see you now more often in the future.

It's you doing all the hard work
Even if you're just doing it for money
At least you didn't take the easy path and make money with your talent supporting Israel
Shows that you have passion for truth (you don't want extra dollars for saying lies )
I do it for passion and a calling to tell stories that need to be told. if success comes then it is a byproduct of this effort and persistence.
As an Arab who watched Aladdin as a kid and took the story as high level english in school too.
I wish i would see this place. It sounds adventurous. Ironically most of the westerners believe that i am actually living in this place..
That is a funny way to look at it. "See this place". We would have to adventure deep down into someone's dark subconscious to find it @Recker1125.
I'm Making a Story about an Indonesian Muslim Boy in New York who befriend Many kinds of Kids both Christian, Jews, Hindus, Buddha, Shinto and Atheist People! What do you think?
Sounds like an exciting premise. Is the dynamic about their religious backgrounds, or their immigration sequence generationally, specific cultures or a mushroom mash of all? I think that’s where you need to identify which direction the story goes? Where are you from so I also understand your vantage point in telling the story?

'Reel Bad Arabs' by jack Shaheen is a great book that details this issue. It goes into super great detail abt all the stereotypes of arabs in hollywood before 9/11. Jack has another book that talks abt post 9/11. I recommend anyone to read those. There is also a documentary abt the former book.
Omar thanks for reinforced the quality of Shaheen's work. The book is referenced as well as a link when the documentary is mentioned is found in the video itself. so I hope people get to check it out.
You can’t be hero without Evil , So create your own villain
Once Majority of People understand, they will became the thing they scared of
Yes for sure, no good without and evil. Next video talks at a length about this concept. Thank you for your insight.
It's about time.
Yes. Overdue but now that we do, we should continue! ✊🏼
My God, the world needs more videos like this! The Genocide in Palestine and the sketchy narratives defending the atrocities against the human beings in Palestine opened my eyes.
Thank you and more videos will be coming that address the injustices.
they also do this with russians and germans
That's very true. It is crazy how they target those who they dont understand and fear.
Another angle to this portrayal, it also affected the psyche of young Arabs. I’ve witnessed many Egyptian and Levantine people distancing themselves from being an Arab. Like saying “I’m not an Arab, I’m Greek mixed with Nubian” cause these movies made it being an Arab or adjacent to it shameful.
I can believe that for sure. Categorizing people can be extremely suppressive.
Por favor, subtítulos en español!😔
As arabs its our fault as well. For example did Japan or S-Korea waited for the Hollywood to be fair with them?
No they worked hard and now everyone love their culture. And understand their prespective of things.
Can’t deny that we haven’t helped ourselves in the impressions and understandings of our identity religion and culture, that’s for sure.

If you have not read it yet, I recommend you to read Orientalism by Edward Said
@tentacionxxx5711. One of my favourites Orientalism. Actually two quotes in the video are from Edward Said. He really capture the depth of how the West shaped a very narrow and negative view of the Arab world. Thank you for the recommendation. Hopefully other viewers can take you recommendation.
Wael Hallaq goes even deeper, in « Restating Orientalism »
Will check it out Commontouch and thank you for sharing this knowledge with everyone here. Truly appreciated.

I would like to think that all adults reach a point in life where they are able to critically examine what comes out of Hollywood and realize much of it is nonsense, but reality tells me that that is not necessarily the case
I like your thought process but I unfortunately dont think adults can separate too consciously how they were conditioned during their formative years. Or else psychologists/therapists would be out of business.
It is shocking how normalised this all is.
The sad part is that it's become normal and numbing for Arabs to see themselves as these stereotypes.
The oil billionaire is 100% accurate in the UAE and Saudi, and somewhat accurate elsewhere. From personal experience.
Can you elaborate? Because I believe not many have met oil billionaire from the Gulf. Most are either not very publicly out there and second, not many will recognise who they are. And if so, how do they represent all Arabs? Or are you saying that the oil billionaire is a very very specific stereotype that doesn't apply to the full Arab populations. That would mean there is a stereotype for what? Say a 100 people in total?
Nice video
Thanks. for your kind words and support.,
You failed to mention that those behind this vilification are “well well well” guys
Was there a need to?
Great as always 👍 as we have talked before, there are a lot of people who are oblivious about us , and as horrible and sad what is happening in Gaza, it really opened the eyes of many , not only to the atrocities that are happening, but to shady and vicious practices by the media.
And to be fair, stereotyping is a crime that both sides practice, but the damage done by the western side is much greater and well planned, we also see the west as the source of all evils (which they are not) , and we use this as a defence mechanism to justify the failure and corruption that is spreading in our nations .
We all should see each other as humans with hopes, dreams, struggles and identities.
Putting a group of people in a package is just being lazy.
Great summation Ahmed. This channel will never excuse those who commit injustices over others, even if they are Arab or Muslim, but this content is about a planning system of conditioning that has negative intentions.
Always appreciate your thoughts and input my friend.

Well done to you. That’s some amazing discipline and prioritisation @ilegend6470
Footnote: "Hollywood" and "Department of Defense" are code words for "Jews".
One can infer that as the end goals are the same but again I dont think we can generalise. It's not about a faith, it's about a political agenda. So maybe Zionism is a closer link.
@@thekandarichronicles Or maybe the political agenda is already embedded in the core text of the cult ideology which tries to disguise itself as a faith.
I dont disagree with you that the lines have been blurred between politics and faith. But call me naive as I think if we look back to history pre Zionism, Jews did indeed have a strong and impactful presence in Arab and Muslim societies.
Russians: "Mmh. First time?"
Your comment is not clear, can you clarify please?
@tareqkandari7277 he means that Russians suffer from the same thing, it is actually true. They are always the bad guys in movies 😂😂😂
Some may say this is all becuse the prophecy line was taken away from them.... Jealousy.
Personally I dont see jealousy but it could be. I think it's more of a supremacy angle.
A several minute long sizzle reel of hateful content to include children's cartoons would have really driven home the point.
Could have been one way to relay the message. But a story I believe makes for better viewing.
Thought-provoking and logical and just.
But, tit-for-tat reigns higher. For every stereotype by them, Arabs can stereotype back. But weak intelligentsia and movie industries is a failure on our parts.
Now, even some Indian movies are joining the stereotyping bandwagon and showing a hero bashing a bunch of Arabs in a terroristic land.
The stereotyping goes way back since the crusaders who refused to call Muslims what they are but chose to call them Mohammedans or Moors, French philosophers like Voltaire wrote negatively about the Mohammedans.
Unfortunately, this stereotyping made our generations internalise the idea they are inferior.
I don’t want to write an assay, but it hurts to watch a beautiful culture and people get badly characterised.
Not sure about tit for tat, never liked that strategy. I think it's more about our awareness, to be aware that there is a danger to us, as you mentioned.
Please translate to Polish so I can show it to many people
I would love to but my Polish is non existent. Sorry.
@@thekandarichronicles Of course, I know, but I mean can you enable auto translation to Polish for subtitles if RUclips is giving that option (I see many other languages available), or hire someone to create subtitles or even use AI to translate transcription and give it to someone to proof read only.
