@@mohameddiaby835 I do not attempt to condescend, and as such, I truly hope that you might read reputable sources such as Bruce Catton's 'This Hallowed Ground'; to assume the war was ENTIRELY about slavery is asinine even amongst reputed historians. Certainly it was a major factor, but it ignores a half century of economic 'bullying', for lack of a better word imposed upon the south. I care for you as a human, and as such wish the best for you. I would hope that you might at least consider the same for myself, and look at the many other factors that led to the war.
A war of that magnitude cannot be maintained for that long, with such an EXTREME body count without the will of the common man of the dissident faction, and (forgive me for I do not recall) something to the order of 95%-99% of all southerners did not own slaves.

Today i found an old picture of my grandpa in his uniform, a picture completely worn out and almost falling apart. It was then that I was reminded of this song. You might wonder why I say this all, after all it is not about the CSA, but this songs reminds me of all the men who stood up for something in their lives, especially in the army. Glory to them.

Abe lincoln himself said "if I could save the union without freeing any slave, I would do it"

Then you would've fought for the preservation of slavery if you wanted to or not In what’s now known as the “Cornerstone Speech,” Stephens told a Savannah, Ga., crowd in 1861 that “our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas [as those of slavery foes]; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.”

@clandau1618 While we should respect the good both sides, the war was definitely about slavery. Lincoln only let the border states keep their slaves because they would join the confederacy of they were taken away. The emancipation proclamation also didn't effect them because it was about weakening the south, not achieving Lincoln's personal interests. While slavery wasnt the reason every soldier enlisted, it was by far the biggest cause of the war.
Alexander Stephens said "Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery-subordination to the superior race-is his natural and normal condition"
Mosby, an anti-slavery confederate cavalry leader even said "I've always understood that we went to war on account of the thing we quarreled with the North about. I've never heard of any other cause than slavery."
While I think respecting the south is important, dismantling the lost cause is too. I would also add that we should judge soldiers from the time, slavery was excepted in the south at the time and it was key to the southern economy. If southern society didn't say it was evil then it wasn't evil for the politicians and planters to fight for it, nore any confederate soldiers who fought for slavery either.

rosemarie443 When I say states rights I feel you don't understand what I mean. States rights doesn't necessarily mean representation in congress. It means the state has a right to determine what is best for the state as long as it doesn't harm other states in the Union, but with the federalization of the union and growing power of the executive, what gets passed by the executive is universal across all the states. One example before the civil war was the "tariff of abominations" which satisfied the merchants of the north but the raised prices directly harmed the south. If there were states rights the tariffs would only apply to northern ports and the south wouldn't have to suffer, however this wasn't the case and the south was embittered by this and protested. this is where the palmetto tree came in for S.C.. The issue with slavery in the south wasn't that all white people hated blacks and felt they all needed to be enslaved, in actuality the south needed the labor and if they were freed they would go north for better opportunities in the factories causing wages to inflate destroying the southern economy. If states rights were in place there would be no new slave states, but the south would keep theirs till they can grow out of it if you will. If you still think the south was the only racist party look north shortly after the war. In Detroit in 1863 only measly 8 years after the war and the blacks left the south, as predicted, Race riots ensued between the whites and the blacks but the Union never got attention to it

I love the Irish influence in many of these beautiful songs. Up the Irish. I understand why those Irishmen of the South fought for the Southern States. They came from a place of government oppression and understood it well. They also were well aware of the treatment their kin in the North were dealing with at that point in time. Bless the Confederacy and the ideals they held dear, which were States Rights and what they felt was overburdening and unwarranted taxation by a government that was disinterested in them. Gee, does that sound familiar? These proud men wore their uniforms of Grey with honor. I salute them, and all who chose to do so.

+rosemarie443 , With all respect I don't know where you got your facts from. I've gotten mine from the written history of the Irish immigrants that were in New York at the time and what they endured. We will agree to disagree on this I suppose.

    • @billneice3747
      @billneice3747 9 лет назад +2

+rosemarie443 , I sincerely doubt that we've ever met. Not that it's impossible, only improbable. I do know that many Irish across the North called themselves Scotch-Irish in an attempt to separate themselves from the other Irish immigrants to try to avoid the discrimination. This discrimination was based solely on appearance. If you had fair skin and red hair( the classic stereotype attributed to the Irish)you were a target in the North. The fair skinned, red haired Irish immigrants also had a name for those that called themselves "Scotch-Irish"(or to be more accurate, my Mothers ancestors)they called them the "Black Irish." It's no secret that discrimination was as rampant in the North as it was in the South. Even among the Irish themselves.

+rosemarie443 , I'll not say another word Ma'am. No other group received the kind of treatment that the American Indians did from all races that immigrated to this country. This shocking truth was something I first became aware of as a youngster in a Junior High School History class. We were studying our local history. I was born and raised in Erie, Pa., on the banks of Lake Erie itself. Now I'd never given much thought to why the city or County was named Erie, it's not the type of thing that would have interested a Junior High School student back then and maybe even now. But the revelations I was exposed to were shocking and troubling then and to this day when I think about it. The area that became the County of Erie and city of Erie was, when the European settlers arrived in the area, inhabited by the Eriez(I think that's how they spelled it)tribe of American Indians. Now it's well known that there were times that the tribes warred between themselves over disputed territory. But this was different. From what we were taught there more than likely was some friction between the Eriez Tribe and these foreign invaders. It's understandable, your homeland is being taken from you, what are you supposed to do? What horrified me, then and now, was the solution the Europeans came up with. Instead of trying to work something out between them the Europeans, banking on their superior weaponry attacked and annihilated the entire Tribe. The Eriez Indian Tribe disappeared from the face of the earth, not one was left alive. I couldn't believe it Warriors, women, and children, all killed. The oldest and youngest, all massacred. The final straw for me was when we were taught that after the entire Tribe had been eliminated the Europeans decided to name the County and the City after them. There's also an Erie County in New York State and I suspect the same thing must have happened there although I don't know for sure.

I commented on this video about 6 years ago saying I didn’t get this video, but I get it now.
This song is really about the tragedy and grief and sense of loss that comes with war.
The South really has been vilified beyond all recognition. They were ordinary Americans who law states’ economies relied on slaves, which is wrong obviously, but lots of those young 18 year olds that fought weren’t fighting for that. The random poor kid in Atlanta who heard the Union was coming wasn’t fighting because he hated minorities, he thought he was protecting his home. The random Tennessee volunteer, who was so eager to volunteer even though her never owned a slave in his life did it because he thought he was being patriotic and wanted to be a hero to his state.
Lots of these people aren’t these evil people racists that despise African Americans , they were just fighting for their homes because it’s all they had.
I think it was we a good thing that the Union got rid of slavery, but to call every Southerner, not just “the bad guys”, but also “evil, nazi, racists,” just simply isn’t an accurate description of our American history.
The truth is that we’re all Americans and no one is perfect, we all make mistakes. Slavery ending was a good result, but at the terrible price of brother against brother, family against family. American against American . It’s truly heartbreaking.
And I think that’s the deeper meaning of the song, the grief and heartbreak of not only fighting a losing war and seeing your friends die, but you also were fighting the people who were supposed to get your brothers as well. Think about it, they shared the same culture, the same language, a kid from Ohio could easily bond with a kid from Texas over baseball and rural life, they were very similar Americans. To fight the people you’re so similar to must’ve been hard.
All in all, war is always a tragedy, but war of brother against brother is especially heartbreaking. Again, in my eyes, the Union winning brought the best net positive of being strong enough to win WW1 and Ww2 and the Cold War which wouldn’t have been possible as two separate rival countries, as well as eliminating slavery.
But to call every southern soldier and evil person is simply not a nuanced enough view of history. Lots of them never saw a slave , let alone owned them.
And the grief after a war is always terrible no matter if you’re the victors or the losers. I think that’s what this song is about. It’s a beautiful, but such a sad song. Adieu

Taylors granddaughter married Jefferson Davis making him some kin. I would have to look the exact relation up.

Let's not forget Johnny Reb, almost to a man a poor boy who took up arms to defend the rights of his State and people. In academia we may say and rightly so that the Civil War was "about slavery", but it wasn't to most of those folk who shed their blood for the Confederacy, who never owned a slave, nor hoped nor wanted to, and that is often forgotten.
They fought and died for their rights, as Americans, by the ideals and promises of our founders, in the "Second American War of Independence", and every American should honor them, not only Southerners, as much as we honor any of our war dead.
And I do hope their spirit is not lost, because now we face the immediate consequences of oppressive federal government again, and wherever we may come from, it is time for the people to rise. And this time, I do hope we will win, though it's not for victory we should fight, but because those who oppose us support an evil and a cruel system.
And maybe we will wear gray, and think, upon our sacrifice, of old Johnny Reb.

I agree; both parties are rotten to the core and will just screw ordinary folk over in slightly different ways; it's a tag-team, and a good cop/bad cop routine that they've worked out amongst themselves. It's also an insidious tool to make the American people think they have real choices and real input in government when, really, we no longer do, except in matters that powerful people deem insignificant.

Not when only one of two parties ever gets elected to anything, because they're the only ones with the financial backing to get elected in this system, and they stand for basically the same things -- they can speak very different rhetoric, and do, but if you look at the substance of their policies, there is virtually no difference, e.g. Republicans will pass gun control legislation, Democrats will approve the Patriot Act without question, "Obamacare" is identical to "Romneycare", they all commit to sustaining an endless "war on terror" ... I could go on. That's a nice illusion of choice, but it's been designed to deceive the electorate.
This is why the founding fathers did not like the idea of political parties, in spite of the federalist/anti-federalist divide, which *was* a genuine ideological difference.

Civil War was not about slavery. It was about states rights and citizens rights. The same rights that are getting trampled today by our Government. I truly believe the South will rise again. Only this time it will be to save the whole country. Im glad that most of our Army forts are in the South. Also Southerners make up a good share of our Army. Think more so than the other parts of the US. God Bless the USA and thank you to the patriotic southerners. And that is from a Northerner.
