I was really surprised an american spotted 46 percent of europe. I was expecting around 7-10. I met two american guys at a hostel in Amsterdam. They thought Amsterdam was the country name while they were there. They said they heard a lot about Holland and asked me how to go there. Then they wanted to visit the Netherlands as well. The final question was the cherry on top: “How many countries are there in the NetherlandSSS?”
As a portuguese i am quite surprised so many americans today can identify Portugal on a map of europe. Quite surprising given that less than 10 years ago the vast majority of americans didnt even knew Portugal existed. Amazing.

As a Norwegian that has gotten 100% in around 1 minute on this quiz, this brought pain to me aswell (I would suck at US states but he didn't even know where Poland and France was)

Those that already built some history are well known ; Florida, California, Texas, for example can be placed by most people. Arizona, new mexico, washington, new york, lousiana, michigan, nevada are well known too, Alaska and Hawaï are easy... But the middle is just the biggest farmland on earth. And a bit of desert. And emptiness. That's cool, but there's no reason to know them all
Yeah and funnily enough, I played this game with US people about where the US states are. And I even beat them in knowing more states than they did. I got 39 which I think is pretty good for a non native. The best of them had 28. One of them only knew 6...
Being unable to locate such "classic", mainstream countries as France, Greece, Poland, Switzerland... That's incredible. It's a bare minimum for anyone, even a non-European.
The thing is, as a European I can't name all the balkan countries either but the mainstream countries you should learn at least when you talk about the world wars like... knowing that the "2 front war" happened in Germany because it is in Central Europe and has France to its left and Poland/ Soviet Union to its right should be covered in history... besides many other war things that happened...

Well they speak Spanish in Argentina, French in Senegal, German in Namibia, English in Singapore, Dutch in South Africa and Portuguese in Brazil. As a German of course I know where Switzerland and Italy are located, and I could locate most countries in Asia and the Americas. With Africa I'd have a harder time though. Like ask me to find Tansania and Zimbabwe and I would have difficulties.

He was about the level of some of the pupils I taught last year. Granted those pupils were about 10 years old, and the ones he beat were the ones that couldn't care less about other European countries :). It is a great side. The kids were always allowed to used the page as extra in my class, when we were using computers. We also worked with different spatialmaps, but we sadly didn't get as much into orienteering, as I had planned.

I don't know how is it in the US but in Europe some geography teachers are beasts. We had quiz periodically after we finished a continent. Like we finished Europe and we wrote a test. It contained a blind map. We had to fill in the country, the capital and basic info about religion, race, nationality and economy. Also had topographical, hydrographical blind maps. This was since 5th grade. Than in high school we had capitals. 20/test + diseases.
I remember someone telling me he said to an American he was from Sweden, and the American replied: "That's how you call it in your language, in English we call it Switzerland".

When it comes to history/geopolitics there are 3 types of people in Europe. 1. The crazy nationalist who goes on a 30 minutes rants were they insult every ex enemy the country ever had as if the war is still going on, and how X land should be theirs because //insert a here some half ass reason//. They also know very little history in spite of their rant. 2. The people who adore history and have every history channel on their subscribe list. But the second a controvertial topic comes out they nope out because the are afraid of attracting the crazy people. 3. The ones who barely know any history and the second they hear something that was not in their basic history book from 4th grade, they are amazed or confused.

I don't know how is it in the US but in Europe some geography teachers are beasts. We had quiz periodically after we finished a continent. Like we finished Europe and we wrote a test. It contained a blind map. We had to fill in the country, the capital and basic info about religion, race, nationality and economy. Also had topographical, hydrographical blind maps. This was since 5th grade. Than in high school we had capitals. 20/test + diseases.
