I was really surprised an american spotted 46 percent of europe. I was expecting around 7-10. I met two american guys at a hostel in Amsterdam. They thought Amsterdam was the country name while they were there. They said they heard a lot about Holland and asked me how to go there. Then they wanted to visit the Netherlands as well. The final question was the cherry on top: “How many countries are there in the NetherlandSSS?”

As a portuguese i am quite surprised so many americans today can identify Portugal on a map of europe. Quite surprising given that less than 10 years ago the vast majority of americans didnt even knew Portugal existed. Amazing.
Being unable to locate such "classic", mainstream countries as France, Greece, Poland, Switzerland... That's incredible. It's a bare minimum for anyone, even a non-European.

He was about the level of some of the pupils I taught last year. Granted those pupils were about 10 years old, and the ones he beat were the ones that couldn't care less about other European countries :). It is a great side. The kids were always allowed to used the page as extra in my class, when we were using computers. We also worked with different spatialmaps, but we sadly didn't get as much into orienteering, as I had planned.

I don't know how is it in the US but in Europe some geography teachers are beasts. We had quiz periodically after we finished a continent. Like we finished Europe and we wrote a test. It contained a blind map. We had to fill in the country, the capital and basic info about religion, race, nationality and economy. Also had topographical, hydrographical blind maps. This was since 5th grade. Than in high school we had capitals. 20/test + diseases.
I mean It’s kinda different level though. Like - guessing administrative regions of a country vs. guessing entire countries. Also. Marking Russia as Poland… well this was a Polish land once, soo.

Can someone please explain to me how it is that most Americans don't know geography? I, as an average educated European, can point out on a map most of the states in North and South America and even assign flags to them, I can do the same with Africa and Asia. And no I'm not a nerd, I have an average education and work as a forestry worker.

Well they speak Spanish in Argentina, French in Senegal, German in Namibia, English in Singapore, Dutch in South Africa and Portuguese in Brazil. As a German of course I know where Switzerland and Italy are located, and I could locate most countries in Asia and the Americas. With Africa I'd have a harder time though. Like ask me to find Tansania and Zimbabwe and I would have difficulties.

For me its Funny how they compare knowing a country's states to knowing the location of countries. Maybe the level of challenge for an individual is the same but in reality its not the same thing. So to have a fair challenge it should be both marking the names of the whole worlds countries.

Well, tbh, I'm European and outside Louisiana, Hawai, Alaska, Texas, California, Nevada, Washington, New York and Florida I can't really tell which state is whici, I know the approximative location (like Arkansas is somewhere south middle, North Dakota is in south East but the precise one, hard to tell) but when it come to Europe, outside of the Balkans I'm pretty sure of me, even for Andorre and Liechtenstein

Macedonia is also a place in northern Greece, causing a naming dispute between the countries. So Macedonia changed its name to North Macedonia in 2019. South Macadonia is kinda in Greece then (kinda) x x

I don't know how is it in the US but in Europe some geography teachers are beasts. We had quiz periodically after we finished a continent. Like we finished Europe and we wrote a test. It contained a blind map. We had to fill in the country, the capital and basic info about religion, race, nationality and economy. Also had topographical, hydrographical blind maps. This was since 5th grade. Than in high school we had capitals. 20/test + diseases.
I mean It’s kinda different level though. Like - guessing administrative regions of a country vs. guessing entire countries.
Also. Marking Russia as Poland… well this was a Polish land once, soo.

Can someone please explain to me how it is that most Americans don't know geography? I, as an average educated European, can point out on a map most of the states in North and South America and even assign flags to them, I can do the same with Africa and Asia. And no I'm not a nerd, I have an average education and work as a forestry worker.

As a German of course I know where Switzerland and Italy are located, and I could locate most countries in Asia and the Americas. With Africa I'd have a harder time though. Like ask me to find Tansania and Zimbabwe and I would have difficulties.

@@roso_dei_venti Most Americans (I think it was 60-70%) can't even point to Iraq or Syria despite their recent political situation with the US.
For me its Funny how they compare knowing a country's states to knowing the location of countries. Maybe the level of challenge for an individual is the same but in reality its not the same thing. So to have a fair challenge it should be both marking the names of the whole worlds countries.
When boiled down, it's all up to memorizing names and locations, which makes both virtually the same.

Like why would our schools teach about american states, yes some American history contains some of em but not geography. So my point is more that don't all countries teach the countries on every continent so wouldn't that be the most fair comparison.

Well, tbh, I'm European and outside Louisiana, Hawai, Alaska, Texas, California, Nevada, Washington, New York and Florida I can't really tell which state is whici, I know the approximative location (like Arkansas is somewhere south middle, North Dakota is in south East but the precise one, hard to tell) but when it come to Europe, outside of the Balkans I'm pretty sure of me, even for Andorre and Liechtenstein

As an American, I assure you not everyone in the USA is this bad at geography, my best time is 100% in 70 seconds, I strive for a minute, but I average around 90 seconds; Every time I see one of these videos a part of my soul and my brain dies
Ok for some reason I thought Switzerland had its own language that’s similar to German. I didn’t know they had three official languages from other countries. As a European I am appalled that I did not know this.
