- McLaren-Mercedes looked very strong in the first two phases of F1 sprint qualifying in Miami - on medium Pirellis - but when the top ten switched to softs for the final blast it was Red Bull-Honda's Max Verstappen who again rose to the top with a beautifully-sculpted lap. Lando Norris, who had dominated Q2, qualified only P9, his only consolation being the thought that his fastest lap in Q2 would have put him on the pole had he reproduced it only a few minutes later. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified an excellent P2 after losing all of the morning session due to a spin, ahead of Red Bull's Sergio Perez and a very impressive Daniel Ricciardo, who recovered from a wall-glancing moment in Q2 to prove the worth of the updated Visa Cash App-Honda. Neither factory Mercedes, by contrast, made it through to Q3.

Stroll out qualifying Alonso should be noted. He’s quick sometimes when he’s not lancing other drivers.
He's always quick in low grip conditions, be it wet or just a track like this with smooth surface and not warm enough rubber, but in low grip he excells, like regularly..

Hopefully he's found the setup he needs like at Renault in 2022. He drove the wheels off that thing, even though Ocon got little out of it.

Ridiculous comment again. Yet ferrari, redbull, mclaren, alpine won races during that era. Ferrari were competitive in 2017. 2023 was a 1 horse race. 2024 is going the same. Also you haters seem to almost forget Hamilton career at mclaren. Plus the disrespect vettle gets is hilarious.
spoken like a clueless chap who has never watched f1 before this year and gets his information from echochambers who spread misinformation out of hatred. 2014-2016 they had the advantage. 2017 and 2018, ferrari had the faster car till mid season and got out developed by the end while hamiltion kept them in contention. Though I do think if you put current Max into that 2014-2016 Merc he would absolutely destroy and humiliate Nico like he's doing to Sergio now and win 80-90% of the races during that period.
Lewis on top form is probably the fastest driver there is. However, he's less consistent and has more off weekends than Max has.
I still remain adamant that the 2014-2016 Merc was further ahead of the competition than the 2022-2024 RB.
It’s not just the engine either. That generation of merc especially towards the end had very good aerodynamics

Max made a mistake, but still had 3 purple sections. Finally Daniel it was baout time.
It was 3 purple sectors because he was one of the first drivers taking a lap. I think all 3 sectors got eventually snagged by other drivers.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Max Verstappen is a racing savant. No matter the conditions he finds a way. I still believe he would win the WC in any of the top three or four teams.

It was amazing to see how fast the Redbull was when Max's pole lap had some big mistakes
Max had a terrible qualifying, but still got P1. The guy is really from another planet.
In this case, almost all of the other drivers also had terrible Q3 session. Daniel was remarking he felt the car was terrible as well on the soft tire, and was surprised such a bad feeling car got 4th.
Oscar Piastri was also complaining the car felt bad on soft. Fernando was saying the car was inconsistent during the whole qualifying.
Indeed, the fastest lap was in Q2 on medium tires.
Either the track had very sudden became slower, or the soft tire really didn't work, or needed a very different setup to work. And that wouldn't be the first time. A few races ago the soft was too soft to be a real choice.
How are the Mercedes upgrades going?
How about bigger mirrors and/or led light(s) on the dashboard to alert drivers of cars around them, including those in possibly blind spots or with a potentially dangerous speed differential? That could help additionally, given that once in a while, it is argued that the pilot was not warned on the radio about a serious hazard.
Or perhaps mount cameras in the rear wing and have high definition screens in the cockpit and do away with the mirrors altogether?

Regarding the mirrors and their lack of effectiveness nowadays, why dont they just put blond spot monitoring sensors like they do on road cars? Yes it’ll add some weight but if it’s homologated and mandatory for everyone it wouldnt make any difference.

FIX THE MIRRORS.
Add indicator lights on the dash to warn the driver of other cars.
Very simple technology. Make it standard issue, identical on all cars.

honestly shocking qualifying.... Leclerc with almost no practice destroying Sainz on a track i didnt expect leclerc to do better...also ricciardo out of nowhere from being horrible and his career being over to p4
whats so surprising about LeClerc beating Carlos? Charles is the faster driver. Carlos is on top when Charles doesnt perform. When Charles is on form he's easily a few tenths clear both in quali and in the race.
I wouldn't say Max did a perfect lap in SQ3, he said it was terrible and couldn't believe he got pole. But you know how Max is, Perfection or absolute crap in his eyes.
Max lap wasn't that good, 2nd sector especially, he even said so. But he is so good that he can make mistakes and still end up on the pole.

It's Max. He's just so good. Any other driver in his Red Bull would do worse. Doing a time near Max's in qualifying doesn't mean anything in the race. He could easily get a full minute ahead of the rest and they know it.

Max was slower then Norris on mediums in Q3 and he had an couple of imbalances it wasn't perfect in Q3. He was surprised to win.. Can't blame him if my time is slower then Norris on meds in Q2 i wouldn't expect to win either.

that was risky from RB to do 1 run in Q2 at the end for Max. could just an eff up lap due to a yellow section, traffic or a red flag, or just a rare error of driver. but anyway went into Q3.

The chassis was changed for Daniel - not for Yuki. I looks like Daniel was correct about there being "something a bit off" about the old chassis, because last race Ricciardo was in for a points finish before the Stroll shunt. Yuki needs to get a new chassis as well, however, today's Yuki result was more to do with Yuki being a hothead yet again rather than a problem with his car. He was pushing too hard.

Max did not "put in a perfect sublime lap" in Q3. He had an early lap bobble that he openly acknowledged. Peter seems to have a mental or keyboard shortcut for that, even when it doesn't apply.

Hi. Mr Peter can we find out were Merc put the new floor ? In the garage or in the office ? Becouse the cars looks like another big fail. IT is just to much . I am realy afraid for the safety of the Merc pilots , IT is so unbeliveble what is happening overthere. I Don t coment about the others teams becouse I am a Lewis Hamilton fan , I have always been and also Merc . Sent please another email to Mr WOLF and ask him about the new floor, where is IT becouse all we see IT is the same unsecure car , slow on straight line, with many problems.

Max did not put out a brilliant lap, his lap was really not good, and could have been much quicker. But the circumstances were difficult for many in the last part
Max with less than desirable lap due to soft tires which also compromised a host of other cars especially McLaren and he still comes out on top.
McLaren must be scratching their heads. Mercedes is par for the course, just bad.

Charles makes so many mistakes and once in a while pulls one out of the bag. Too inconsistent to definitively be a world champ and I world have kept Sainz to learn from Ham.
In order to drive to the limit, you first have to find it.
Charles drives on the limit thus he can make a few mistakes. But that allows him to be fast.
Carlos makes mistakes during the race more often than Charles.
Charles does all his mistakes in qualifying.
