Hi! Loved the video as always and the answer to the AC question I believe is that if u do it slow then air bubbles will form which isnt good! Keep up the good work!
Hi AC, I emailed you before, my name is Gregory, I am getting your book, and will start an keeping in a few months. I love watching the Phoenix empire grow, #antloveforever.
He obviously writes scenarios for his videos and is not telling us everything. For example, we see TWO different fire ant queens in this video - one with dent on her torso (1:48) and the mother of colony (without any dent - 8:16).
Environmental Scientist here, most commonly when water takes on a pink hue it is serratia marcescens. This usually occurs when there is pet or animal waste in the water. I know it is harmless to humans, rarely causing minor infections but I can not speak for ants. I find it unlikely that it is a serious concern and most likely harmless. To add to this: Honestly, I find it more concerning that the water source is contaminated with waste. Just because serratia marcescens isn't a huge concern doesn't mean other more harmful bacteria won't thrive in the water. Water with lots of waste is rich in phosphorous making it a breeding ground for bacteria. So just because serratia is usually harmless doesn't mean the water is harmless. Lastly, I worked in a microbiology lab for ALS Global for a time, and let me just say that is ALOT of bacteria. In the lab a hue that dark is almost always waste contamination.
Like all pets, this is why you provide fresh water daily and clean the water dish. How many people drink from a half finished water bottle left out for a couple weeks? Not a good idea.
I think the hybrid nest is better for the next setup. Keeping an eye on the Queen while the colony is still in the early stages is a good idea because if anything happens to her the entire colony will be lost. Anything can happen as the "pink outbreak" has proven and like I said if it happens to the Queen then it's bye-bye to the entire colony.
True, but the same could be said for a fire ant colony of *any* size. Since the colony will only ever have this one queen, it doesn't matter how big they are; if something happens to the queen it's light's out. At this point I think there are more than enough workers to properly care for her Royal Highness the Empress of Embers (a name I prefer over Ember Empress), so there's no need for the AC Family to be keeping tabs on her anymore. If we want to keep being able to see her, it's only for our benefit, not hers. With that in mind, I think the Ant Tower is the healthier option. Not only does it more closely mimic the ants' natural habitat, giving them ample digging media (which they apparently want desperately), but it will allow for the introduction of a much wider array of symbiotic organisms from The Nucleus, keeping the colony cleaner and healthier.
Trevor21230 they will dig anyways. Plus seeing them run around at early stages is something to be grateful of. We can’t throw away something so great so early. Yes I think they should be in a natural habitat but sooner or later they will get an AC outworld.
This exactly. Something went wrong with a colony that I put in a natural setup, never figured out what exactly happened. Now I move all my starter colonies to a "hybrid nest" type formicarium before moving them to anything else. So much easier to see what's going on... but majority rules! I like them getting strong in a controlled environment.
I think the pink water is actually called "Serratia marcescens", the coloration is formed by bacteria so I recommend removing it immediately. The pink water is really dangerous for the ants so please remove it immediately. I hope this helps you.
I mean really how do you not have your own TV show on Discovery or Animal Planet? You make this extremely interesting and get us emotionally involved as well...it's great educational entertainment! So again I ask...how are you not on TV?????

Pink water is not toxic - it is caused by an excess of permanganate present in your drinking water. Why is my water pink? Your water is pink because of an excess of permanganate present in your drinking water.
"Pink water" **has sudden flashbacks to Chemical Plant zone where I drowned several times** Edit: Be warned, wars are happening in this reply thread. Edit 2: Like seriously this is out of control. Edit 3: WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE STILL COMING GO BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE
This makes us kind of "God" (if we would believe in that) for the Ants, as we determine their Food and Space to live. Or we are just Scientists, eager to learn.
Please do a hybrid nest! It always puts me in awe when I can see the ants forging, moving stuff around and honestly its a better option: You can monitor health and also it would allow us viewers to see all these wonderful ants! Edit: Thanks for 53 likes! I've never had this many!
@@Trentrick_Lamar im not a scientost but that doesnt really look like a fire ant. looks more golden than the fire ants we usually see. but that could also be due to light.

3:00 Looks like an acid base indicator combined with a change in pH. No idea where the indicator came from but many bacteria produce acid as a by product.
Noo don't choose the tower :( I want to see them a lil longer! I mean sooner or later they will end up in a terrarium where we will never see the queen and babys again. And there is no risk of mites infection without soil, which is important imo since the colony is still so small.
Why is everyone choosing tower, it’s been so long since we had an ant colony that we could actually watch grow instead of just staring at a box of soil and plants
@@AnnoyedWoof356 because the ants like privacy, when you open the lid up, the light comes in and that freaks the ants out, it might get boring to not see the queen, but we respect the ants preferences, right?

Pink water is not toxic - it is caused by an excess of permanganate present in your drinking water. Why is my water pink? Your water is pink because of an excess of permanganate present in your drinking water.

I am giggling about being able to vote for their future. I love how interactive this channel is. Thank you for that!
Thanks for voting and determining the future of the ants! Ant love forever!
This makes us kind of "God" (if we would believe in that) for the Ants, as we determine their Food and Space to live.
Or we are just Scientists, eager to learn.
@@AntsCanada Yup i enjoy this journey of the empire. With us voteing on the next thing.

@Emma Cain No it isn't, you can see it crawling around on the table as well.

@@Trentrick_Lamar im not a scientost but that doesnt really look like a fire ant. looks more golden than the fire ants we usually see. but that could also be due to light.

Noo don't choose the tower :( I want to see them a lil longer! I mean sooner or later they will end up in a terrarium where we will never see the queen and babys again. And there is no risk of mites infection without soil, which is important imo since the colony is still so small.
yeah
but the ants want some freedom with the way they dig their tunnels and whatnot, ants would rather stay in private and you should respect that!
