I'm getting screws removed on Thursday, after a being on a 7 month waiting list. I had the initial injury, a trimalliolar ankle fracture, 2 years ago, and I have had pain ever since. At first the pain was horrific. About 8 months after, it wasn't as bad, but after those 8 months, it started getting worse again. I had an xray, and they could see that the longest screw, that was attached to the fibula bone plate, had started to crush my tibia and spin around, so you could see crumbs of the tibia on the xray. Also, the 2 screws on the inside of my ankle will also be removed since they are scraping away at some other bone, causing alot of pain. So we'll see if I'm in that 50% that will get an improvement. I really hope so, I haven't been able to be active at all these past 2 years. Wish me luck! :)🍀

@GoTActionDotCom My surgery got aborted. Right there on the op-table. I had an issue with my heart, and they had to stop. So there was no hardware removal at all. I'm still waiting for a heart x-ray (don't know the english term) before they know which surgery method is suitable. So I'm sorry I can't give you an update on hardware removal. Maybe remind me next year? 🤗 How is your ankle/leg going? I hope your pain is decreasing and that you get the help you need! ❤

@@designstinamarshmallow9868 what a pity. Hope it gets better for you. In September 23 i had an accident in Bali Indonesia. I had surgery there, because i triple broke my left ankle. I got 14 screws and a plate build into my ankle. I feel the material permanently and i want to get it removed. I can see and feel the screws through my skin. When i lay down my leg on hard surfaces, like on the floor, it hurts. My german physiotherapist thinks it could be to much material in my ankle.

Just had a plate and seven screws removed from my elbow after nine months. The recovery is a breeze compared to
my initial surgery. I'm pretty thin so I could literally see the shape of the plate under my skin! I already had recovered
about 95% of my ROM after physical therapy. Hoping now to push it back to 100%. My surgeon gave me my hardware
to keep. So weird to think all that was in my elbow!

Im going go have my surgery of removal on elbow radius next week after one year four months. Reason to remove is because i feel the rubbing and muscle have to go through bump of the hardware when turning my arms while i having some actions. Also sometime i feel slight sting on the spot. The dilemma went through the whole year and i decide to do it as i try to do gym weight lifting the muscle limitation to go through bump is getting in the way. I had a wrist fracture 5 weeks ago and now I have plate and screws in it. It's still too early to decide whether they should be removed or not but in my case, tendons are constantly being rubbed by them which is causing discomfort, of course. But, alongside getting physiotherapy, I have to move my hand all the time in order to reduce its stiffness. Hopefully things will get better with time. The operation took place one month ago and its main advantage was that I could get back to work very soon after that. My wrist was stiff, of course, but the limited mobility I desperately needed to do my work was OK. My physiotherapist constantly encourages me to use it, of course, and steering my bike today with my (once-)broken wrist also let it make some improvement.

You cannot generalize about screw and hardware removal, except to say that if there is no immediate problem, don't touch it. Some scoliosis patients have over 20 large screws in their spine and they stay there for the rest of their lives, without much problems. Other people have a broken collar bone and because there is not much fat in that area, the screw and plate may be apparent. I've got all kinds of metal in the body from fusions and do not plan to have it removed. One thing you have to be sure is that the hardware is actually the problem. If you don't understand the surgery, physiology and neurology well, you may wrongly assume it is.

    • @mrsd1095
      @mrsd1095 7 месяцев назад

She didn't generalize. She gave multiple examples of why people may get them out.

    • @bengt_axle

@@mrsd1095 I'm not talking about her. I agree with what she is saying. "You" refers to a person who is contemplating screw removal. When people have post-op problems after a screw has been placed, many assume it is because of the hardware and insist on having in removed. And they will go to another surgeon just for that, who will do it because they get paid for it.

Excellent information Thanks. I had the hardware removed from a broken humerus just under the shoulder. It was a plate and 7 screws. I'm now WORSE than after the first surgery. The Dr. told me it would be 'arthroscopic of may include a mini open repair, but he completely opened up the full incision and removed All the tissue including some muscle. The right shoulder being connected to the left hip area via the fascia is causing muscles not to fire right and I0 months later I'm still having problems with muscle spasms and walking, standing and sitting.
I would have left the hardware in, but he said it had to come out. It was causing some discomfort. He told me I'd be able to sleep on it if I had it out, but I can't sleep on it. It hurts my shoulder and all the way down into my right hand.

Hi, I broke my left ankle in 2020.
I have hardware both sides of my ankle and at the back of the ankle (I did a wonderfuljob breakingthis one).I also teared all the tendons in my right foot at the same time I broke the other ankle.
My left ankle is swollen and painful every day. I try not to take painkillers regularly as addiction runs in my family.
But I usually find even if I take painkillers and anti inflammatory medicine, it does not help.
I am a pre school teacher and am constantly on my feet and even when at home I am always busy.
Should I just walk it off and pretend the pain isn't there like I have been doing or is it a good idea to see the surgeon again and ask for the hardware to be removed.

There were 3 holes in the bone where the screws were; best thing is to eat a lot of protein, Vitamin C, D. Dark leafy greens, milk, calcium loaded foods. I was glad to get those things out; they were causing a lot of pain. It takes about 6-8 weeks to fill in those holes. Then you are good to go!

I just had hardware removed from my ankle. I had 8 pins, 1 plate, two screws and a hammock removed. I had a trimalar fracture with a dislocation back I may of 2021. They don't fill rhe holes with anything. Scare tissue will fill in and bone. But it takes up to 12 weeks. I have to do pt again to build up the ankle again. Plus I bought a nice b4ace that I can wear in my shoe to keep me from rolling my ankle. Otherwise I coukd re-break it again.

my son had 3 fractures in his femur and they had to place a screw in his growth plate so they said they will be removing it, so that it doesn't effect his leg growth otherwise one leg would grow while the other remained the same size and he will have a noticeable limp if we keep hardware in. my son is 5'7" and he is only 14...

    Hi ma'am,
My name is Melvin. Im 22 years old. I broke my right tibia, fibula and the ankle in a motorcycle accident exactly one year ago. Fibula got broken completely and got saperated. Tibia was also having a major fracture. I got my surgery and now there's a rod and 3 screws inside my leg. Doctor told my bones are completely healed and the rod and the screws can be removed after three more months. I started walking after one month of the surgery and gradually i started riding motorcycles and later on i started doing workouts too. But sometimes i get pain at the area where the fracture was there and sometimes at the area where the screws are placed. I badly wanted to remove the hardwares from my leg because its not so comfortable having those things inside. I can feel the screws by touching. But last day one of my friends told his brother broke his hand and he also had to have a surgery to fix it with rod and screws. And after one year he removed but later he just fell somewhere and he broke the same hand again. Now again he got the surgery and its fixed with hardwares. After hearing this I'm totally confused. Its my leg. Now i have the support of the hardware while walking. But if i remove it, theres no support for my broken bones. And obviously chances of injuring the leg is really high. Please help me out with this. God bless you.

The hardware won't prevent another fracture. The metal is there for temporarily support. By itself, the metal fatigue will cause it break shortly. Removing hardware will not cause the bone to have less strength.

It was done on march 3 2018.Now i started climbing stair exercises to loss weight and im able to climb 120 floors and as much as possible i dont want operation to remove it because im worried about complication as of now i had only mild pain occasionally but i can climb and walk long distance so my question is if this necessary to remove how many years to remove from time of surgery or if not remove its ok to stay this without complications.

Hi, I recently had a trimallular fracture surgery done on Jan 10 2020.( two plates and seven screws) I just started walking on it at nine weeks and since I started I have been having painful sharp jabbing shooting pains on each side where the pates and screws are as well as up through my shin . It often feels as if the pain is in my bone if that makes since? I also am having some crunching feeling at the top of ankle where the band is and the tendons run underneath. The dr said that was not normal and ordered a CT ( waiting on insurance to clear) .The Dr told me to continue taking my antibiotics and wait 7-10 days and go from. there. I kinda felt like he thought I was exaggerating about the pain and I felt I didn't receive the answer I was looking for. How does the surgeon know for sure its the hardware causing the pain or my body rejecting the metal? Should I go ahead and have the harware removed?

Hey! Thank you for the information. I'm in the same boat as you. I'm 4 weeks post op, and I have two screws and the doc is really suggesting to keep it unless something happens.
Question though, can you get in the water without any trouble? You did mention the rain, but what happens to your foot when you leave in water for long. Does cold water, hot water or any changes in temperature affect the foot?
    Thanks again!

I had bimalleolar surgery only 11 days ago. It went well overall. Excruciating pain the first 36 hours or so but I was expecting that. I am doing cold therapy and I find that after a certain point it might be that the hardware is getting cold and it starts hurting. This is all new so it's hard to say.
I live in the northeast and am hoping the hardware won't be an issue when it gets cold. I have asked several people who have said cold isn't an issue for them. It's good to know, though, that removal is an option down the road.
Nerve block sounds horrible again (for removal), haha. But I guess I can put up with it if I have to.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. 🙂

@@rikiellia Hi, a doctor told me that plate should have never been used on my radius. It was a hollow plate and apparently that isn't strong enough for the location of my break. I personally think the plate broke when the original Dr. screwed the plate into my arm for the initial surgery but based on my SEVERE pain levels after that surgery and other issues like my arm being curved after my cast was initially removed. There's no way I could have broke the plate while my cast was on so I believe it was broken during insert.
