The person I grew up with was a textbook sociopath, who routinely came home from work shifts bragging about how he assaulted people, often bringing home confiscated evidence as trophies. The only difference between now and then is the mass proliferation of video cameras. So these days we're just seeing proof of this sick, tyrannical behavior on a daily basis. But we're only going to see more and more of the same because law enforcement agencies do nothing to screen out candidates with anti-social tendencies. People who crave authority over others and want unquestioned power are the kind of mentally ill people who are drawn to the job of cop. And it's not "a few bad apples". It's pervasive.

If the rest of the police force doesn't hold these types of cops fully accountable, choosing not to boot them from the force, and even allow them to continue terrorizing the public... well they then prove they are past the point of a few bad apples to have become a spoiled bunch. Nothing but rot all the way down to the core.
Look, I get that it is an institutional problem, and that there are many good hearted cops out there, but when those officers stay quiet time and time again, be it out of fear or simply peer pressure, my sympathy and understanding for them wears thin. It should be as offensive to most cops for one of their own to be dirty and a danger to their community as it is for soldiers to find out one of their own was putting the whole squad in danger by engaging in criminal behavior that could provoke retaliation by locals when deployed. A dirty cop should be considered, and treated like, a traitor and criminal, not as a fellow officer in need of protection.
