What an irony that a "kids' movie" delved onto the most profound question of all: What it means to be alive. A puppet and his father taught the world that to be human is to live for something other than the self, and to die for the very same thing.

This song is so beautiful and haunting, because no matter how old a child gets, and what adventures they go on, they're parents will still think of them as a small child. This movie is beautiful and has stayed with me since I saw it. Parenting is hard, and being a child too; I wish we gave ourselves a break more often.
These scenes, how they made me and still make me cry. To See and feel like Pinocchio, misses his dad while: 1.- He Travels on the train (scene with Volpe). 1:15 2.- When he is with Spazz (on the stairs and pasting the advertisement). 1:20 3.- At the end of singing on stage: 1:45 4.- When they bomb the city and he sees the memory of the pinecone 1:59 (immediately the Candlewick's scene) 5.- The scene of the soldier on the stage. 2:35 It really conveys pain and pinocchio's feeling. "Eyes in the rain, I tried to hide, Tears of a boy who shouldn't cry" (What a way to express the pain and suffering of a child who misses his father...) 😞 What a beautiful and wonderful movie, I hadn't felt that in a long time.

It made me teary the movie tempo is quite fast so i can not understand each scenery yesterday, only now take more time to listen and watch~ i can feel the fear in Candlewick’s eyes. It something really human being of a child 😢
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is a visual and musical masterpiece from beginning to end, and so very profound. I will watch it over and over to do it justice.
Love this magnum opus by Del Toro. The animation is awe inspiring, the voice acting is superb and the story is sublime. Pinocchio, the different little wooden boy to the end, drew the good out from those his innocence touched. There's a lesson there for us today that we might benefit from.
I love that there's also immediate foreshadowings of the climax in clips 0:33 and 1:11. It shows the immediate danger and situation that Geppetto will soon run into.
This song really does drive me to tears. It gives the feelings that I am going to be on my own eventually, ensuring to my parents that I'm going to be fine along the way.
For me, my entryway into this song is “the smell of bread” - such a simple but beautifully evocative sensation that fills me with all sorts of feelings and memories from childhood. The smell of fresh-baked bread will always be one of my “pieces of shine” like in the song.
The Academy has sinned for only giving this film the Best Animated Feature nomination, when this masterpiece would've swept Best Original Song. I am extremely grateful for the BAF nom, this is better than any of the songs that did get nommed, aside from Naatu Naatu.
Winner of the “Best Animated Feature Oscar of 2023… 🎊 YES!! 🎉 all that’s missing is a miniature Oscar for Geppetto or Pinocchio to hold like at the BAFTA awards! By god he was a good “enough” boy in the end! 😊
The song is beautiful but so is the movie's not so subtle message. Pinocchio was a puppet that refused to be one in a country ruled by a dictator that wanted every citizen to be his puppets. That is why Guillermo Del Toro set the movie in 1930's Italy when it was ruled by fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. And that is why he focused so much on the character of Candlewick. Who was a very human boy who desperately seeked his father's approval. Even if that meant that he would lose his humanity and become yet another PUPPET for Mussolini. So the movie has a message that I hope that it doesn't get lost with all the "LOL Del Toro did a better Pinocchio than Disney" memes.
It's a bit more than that. Del Toro has openly talked about how his least favorite part of traditional folk tales is the message always being "listen to your parents". This idea of obedience as virtue is why he sets his imaginings of folk tales (Pan's Labyrinth and now Pinocchio) in Fascist countries - one of the core tenets of Fascism being obedience to higher power as essential. Then he has heroes of his story who succeed not by learning to listen to their parents or following orders, but by being themselves and being rebellious - flipping the script on the traditional meanings and showing the moral core of opposition to Fascism. It's no coincidence that (Spoilers) Candlewick's dad is killed by a bomb seconds after he disobeys him openly for the first time. And minutes later Volpe dies after Spazzatura finally disobeys him. And Pinocchio is only able to save his father after he says no to Death, demanding that they change the rules as it isn't fair. It's a well executed theme, perhaps done better than Pan's Labyrinth if only because the ending in that film is such a talking point that it distracts people from discussing the theme.
