FACT: In all the visits I made to Vegas, I noticed one peculiar thing: I always won more money playing slots, when I was playing just for the fun of it! When I played with the intention of "making big bucks," I never won a dime.
I've won pretty consistently on slots because I play for a few hands, if I get nothing, I move on. When I win a nice amount, I cash out and move on to the next machine. The trick is to play the highest odds and cash out if you win something decent. Thinking you'll win the big pot is a suckers game and will cause you to lose whatever you have won. I've won a little here and a little there and at the end of the day it amounts to a nice amount. It's all random, so luck is the key factor, but if you keep going after a big win, you'll probably end up losing it all. Just saying…

Also, its completely right, there is no such thing as a strategy for playing slots (Other than trying to lose less and playing slower). Every spin is its own event and has no effect on future outcomes. If you poured 900 bucks into a slot then the next person sits at that slot machine hits a jackpot, guess what, it wasn't yours. I can go on forever about RNG and advantages and all that but this guys got it covered.

I'm a casino tech for about 10 casinos. He nailed it, they're computers designed to pay out less than they collect in the long run. That doesn't mean that you can't hit it once and make a huge profit. It means that the longer you stay there, the more you conform to the ~90% payout rate. The entire goal of the casino is to keep you playing, and take ~10% of your money. They'll even give you free drinks, just keep playing that machine.
Same here, I was a croupier and I can affirm what you say. You can´t win if you keep playing and yes, the longer you play, the more you loose. The payout rate is closer to 80% in europe.

I know for a FACT that casinos DO tighten up machines that pay out too much.
There was a machine at Auga Caliente in Palm Springs that paid out consistently for several months. Then suddenly...it stopped paying out period.
The casino tightened up the machine to hardly ever pay out, where as at first...for a time..it was paying out on a regular basis.
Have been fascinated by them since I was allowed in Casinos. The old-fashioned ones in Harrah's in Reno went thru unmistakable "cycles": you knew when they'd pay out (usually only 50 bucks, but hey, money was worth more then)
As a designer of many gaming approved slot machines, I can tell you that there are things you didn’t mention.
Some machines do not use an RNG for stopping. Scientific Games (formerly WMS) got sued by IGT for violating the Telnaes Patent which uses an RNG on a “virtual reel”. Instead, WMS used an RNG to determine the pay and stops the reels according to the desired payout.
The concept of a “virtual reel” or “virtual paytable” makes any “near miss” deceptive. In the case of a mechanical slot game, the physical reel is 22 or 25 stops, but the virtual reel can be as high as 500 stops per reel. This makes the Megabucks jackpot possible.
It’s the deceptive electronic equivalent of the mechanical slot days when casinos filed extra notches in the reel drum cam to reduce the chances of stopping on a symbol.

Bravo! Fantastic bit of research and this video! I have heard all of these theories about slot machines through the years from my friends and family. Mathematically, logically, and practically, none of these ideas made sense to me but I had nothing to counter their statements. At least what I had figured was in fact the reality of how these machines worked and how the industry is regulated turned out to be correct! Thanks again.

The sure bet to win is to not play slots in the first place. Casinos are a for profit business not a charity. Anything you win is an investment by the casino to reinforce addictive behavior (impulsive behavior) such as prioritizing the immediate payoff instead of worrying if you have enough money to pay your bills because that dopamine hit is powerful.
That's why first and foremost people must consider this an entertainment and not a stream of income. Some people just test their luck, and it pays off, but most people will lose. Of curse you have people coming in with huge bankrolls and playing low denom machines like quarter machines, i.e. $5k-$10k bankroll, so they are putting the machine through far more spin trials than someone playing a few rounds. That won't change odds, but technically you are using more trials. Imagine if you had a bag with mostly red balls and some white ones, and you were to pick ONCE. Imagine you were asked to pick 1000 times, odds are eventually you might pick the white ones. But do most people have large bankrolls, nope, and even with a large bankroll there is no guarantee, and you are likely to lose it all, as you keep playing anyway. So your best bet is NOT to play machines, SAVE your money instead and build a nest egg, even with market conditions, in the long run you will profit.....With a slot machine you WILL lose, and your odds of being LUCKY and hitting that big jackpot are slim - Even if you do, calculate all that you have gambled before, how many can say that they are in profit ? Thank about it.....Statistically majority of players are at a loss. So all those bogus youtubers who shill casinos, and flash their jackpots, are they telling you how much they spent TOTAL all sessions combined ? Not really, they list tell you how much they spent in their CURRENT session!!!
If you are going for fun times and testing your luck that's fine, you might hit big and go out in profit, BUT it's when it turns into an addiction and people use machines as a stream of income that things become problematic.... If you go to casinos you will see some frequent players, the same ones, you see them day and night spending money like they do not know what to do with it, probably spending their 401k and all life savings down the fucking machines.

You just have to be smart about it, put in the amount of money you would be okay with losing, you either win or lose that’s all.
that's right...the best way to win is to get the most enjoyment for your money...so even though playing penny slots gives you the least chance of making a profit, if you lose $30 playing penny slots for a few hours, but feel you had $30 worth of fun, then you really didn't lose, you just paid $30 for some fun with a slight chance of making money.
I call BS on near misses not being allowed to be programmed in. How many times have you seen the big jackpot symbols line up below or above the pay line? I have seen this MANY times. If it really was not allowed, this would have the same odds as landing on the pay line. Totally programmed in. No doubt about it.
Certain games have their reels weighted - they do this to make the math work. Three reel slots for example. Some video slots are weighted too but the actually math - the RNG pull - does work for either type of game. The teases you speak of might have to do with the limited amount of stops on a three reel game - it's common for progressive symbols or multipliers to land right above or below the Payline only because the blank or other symbol that does land on the Payline is weighted to land more frequently.
Chad Kandaris Have to agree, I've seen many machines that run through pre-programmed teaser patterns, near misses. Things like gamble / collect and nudges etc aren't random either. Certainly not in the UK

Humans are amazing at detecting patterns and if there are three or four of the same in a row we assume that is is programmed. The easier explanation is that randomness sometimes delivers streaks that appear predetermined. Slots are amazingly random - simple math and programming dictates this. I've had the privilege of speaking with several of the mathematicians from WMS and Aristocrat. These games are highly tested and regulated and outcomes are nothing but random.

The house Edge on a slot machine is one of the highest in the entire casino. If you want to gamble learn how to play poker or blackjack
I used to date a casino floor cashier. She told me employees are not allowed to gamble at the casinos they work at because they become aware of the "hot" machines which were always being moved around to different locations within the casino, so she would get together with other employees from neighboring casinos and they would share the location of the hot machines with each other.
On her days off she would go to one of those hot machines she was tipped off about and she would fearlessly pump up to $2000 into the machine knowing confidently that the machine was set to pay her $6000. She was bringing home an extra $3000 to $5000 every week!!! As long as they were smart and didn't get greedy the casinos were none the wiser.

Fortunately I'm blessed in being the unluckiest person when it comes to gambling. If there was a two horse race my money would be on the one with three legs. Outdated now surely this info. Remote changing of percentages can be done now surely in 2022 at the flick of a mouse?
Theoretically it can be done, realistically the casinos won't do this as it creates a backdoor into the slot machines that can be remotely accessed and abused outside the view of the physical security.

I put $20 in a dollar machine and won $2500. A few months later I went back and won $3000 on the same machine. About six months later I won $2500 on that same machine. A friend was with me. After I got paid I gave my friend $20 and said "play this machine". He won $3000 on the third pull. A few weeks later I saw the casino techs take that machine apart. It no longer pays out. For the last two years I periodically watch other people play this machine and they get no hits. My own strategy is to move to another machine if there are no hits.

Everytime you almost hit a jackpot . This encourages you to play more. Most all machines do this. This guy is telling us its a big accident and not intentional. This guy has no credibility.
On a three reel machine there is the chance of six near misses. (eight on four reel) for a possible win. So it might appear there are many more near misses than actual wins - only because there is.
Put another way you have eight times more chance (on four reel) of it being a near miss than a hit. Those odds are identical whether it's an old mechanical machine or electronic one with ANG.

It's all random. The theoretical payback percentage is based on the pay table of the game you play (assuming maximum bets and perfect play).

Just remember when you walk into a casino it is a business and like any business its there to make money not give it away. If you are running low on money and you think you can go to the casino to make some extra money the chance are 90 percent against you of doing so. Never go into a casino and play with money you can not afford to lose. I would recommend if you go take you credit cards out and do not take them with you and only take the cash you plan on losing.
