    You guys! Today we're chatting kitchens and how to make the most of their design :)
    Kitchens are genuinely such an important part of interior design and they can make or break a home. I obviously have way more to say but for now I'm just running through some general ideas to consider when it comes to space planning, storage, materiality, lighting, & some other random opinions that I feel the need to share ✨

    I am part of the small percentage anticipating a kitchen renovation in the near future, so this video is spot on. Currently in the process of trying to purchase an old house in Norway from the 1930s in need of total renovation. I'm a big fan of your design philosophies and they are pretty much 100% in line with mine. Would love it if you could make a video on renovating/upgrading old houses/interiors without taking away its personality and history. What I like about old interior is that its already worn in. Makes me feel more relaxed when I'm not afraid of scratching the floor or denting a wall. At the same time I like modern interior, but feel like they are difficult to maintain and gets easily messy. Much like a nice car. It looks great when it's clean and polished, but the second it gets dirty it looses it's attraction.

    Just a note: in our custom kitchen we have two corner units and they’re great! It gives us four walls to work with instead of just two. They don’t become wasted space bc we purposefully installed lazy susans on each level of each corner unit. On the bottom, deeper cabinets it’s a space to hold our pots (organized by size), which usually take up a huge amount of space anyway. And on the top units we hold things like teas and spices. It’s not gimmicky-it’s a great use of what would have been wasted space. I agree about your dislike about 45 degree angles, though. And we have almost all drawers-they are fantastic! And we have quartz-also great; we can put things on them straight out of the oven or off the stove and they look brand new after many years. I didn’t know about the harms of engineered stone-will consider that in the future.

  • @janelte
    @janelte 19 дней назад +6

    I am in Australia and the ban on engineered stone is active as of 1 July because those manufacturing and installing it are at high risk of inhaling silica dust particles and developing silicosis or lung cancer. The biggest risks are in cutting the "stone" dry to put it in place, so the problem in manufacturing might be more manageable with really good and stringent workplace safety but is passed on to those installing the kitchen.

    as someone who has recently entirely renovated a kitchen, I have so many opinions on this !
    I agree with l with what you said about the corner cabinets, but when you don’t have a choice, I think the best solution is just to put ordinary cabinets on both sides and to put appliances on the counter corner.
    it’s better to have two normal cabinets and loose a little bit of space, than to have that ridiculous lazy Susan style thing … this is what I did and I’m very happy about it.
    also, thank you for recommending quartz, I put in granite and it was definitely not worth the difference in cost.

    I hate cooking but I like kitchen design because kitchens have such specific requirements that it becomes very obvious when they have not been designed well but so satisfying when they are. I think that is also why they are under represented in a lot of design media. You can't just make them aesthetic and leave.

    I love all your videos, but this one has been my favorite. I’m in the middle of redesigning a kitchen, and based on this video I’m going to be changing a few things such as: I had initially reduced the number of lower drawer cabinets, even tho I love them, to lower the cost, but now I think I’m going to eliminate all uppers and put the money I’ll save there into lower drawer cabinets. I do have a separate wall of floor to ceiling cabinets, so that will help with storage. Thank you so much. Maybe a similar video on bathrooms?

    Hi Noel, I totally agree with your take on open shelving. I have done my kitchen several times now. The first time was back in 1998 when we bought our house here in Santiago, Chile. Right from the start I designed two native wood, low depth shelves to put only my pots. We cook a lot so we have large pots that would not fit nicely in the lower cabinets (with doors back then). I have remodelled since then a couple of times the whole kitchen but I have always kept my open shelves. The pots do not get dirty or greasy. At a certain point I bought a set of beautiful pots that made the whole place look really stunning, especially because you can see the shelves from the entrance of the house.
    Also, I have been using Milanote for about a year now. Seeing your mood boards taught me new ways of displaying my ideas. I use Milanote for, literally, EVERYTHING, including planning classes, keynote talks or research.
    BTW, I never comment on YT videos, but you got me here!

    We're about 85% done with a kitchen renovation that we have done almost entirely ourselves - my husband is a hobbyist wooodworker and generally handy, but we definitely underestimated the coordination needed for a full kitchen project. Never again lol. For those who are about to renovate: the internet at large loves to talk about the benefits and low maintenance of quartz countertops (or at least they did two years ago, when I was researching), and while I don't necessarily regret our quartz countertops, I wish I had looked more closely into other materials like soapstone and exotic granite before making a decision. Also (no surprise here), listen to Noah on design solutions reworking the corner area. Corners are NO JOKE, we're having issues with hinges (its a trigger word for my husband at this point) with our corner cabinet fronts. We had no idea hinge design could be so complicated. If I had to do it again, I'd rework that portion of our kitchen. Live and learn!

    The part about authentic vs organic really resonated with me. Weird thing to resonate with, probably, but I have the same exact attitude/issue when it comes to the fashion/beauty side of things, and it can sometimes be difficult to convey properly.
    For instance, I can't stand faux-whatever. Leather, fur, pearls, the list goes on.
    But it's not that I'm obsessed with "the real thing," in a snobbish way, I just don't like it when a material is trying to mimic something it's not. I'm happy to use an obviously synthetic bag/purse, or piece of jewelry, or trim, as long as it's proudly what it is.
    Sure, give me a wildly printed/colored fluffy-hairy synthetic, just never one that's trying to look like it's actually fur. I'd take any number of explicitly man-made materials that are used for cool designs over a synthetic material designed to mimic leather, and so on.
    I think it has to do with intentionality. If I choose an item or a look, I don't want it to be confusing as to whether it was deliberate or not, and using things that are covertly trying to be other things muddles the point, if that makes sense. Some of my takes can get quite controversial in the hair and makeup space for the same reason.
    I do fall on the "no open shelving" side of things, but that's an issue specific to my home, not a universal hatred. First of all, we have cats. Second, my husband and I find it nigh impossible to keep any surface clear to begin with, so adding more potential messiness to our home would be counter-productive, but this obviously doesn't apply across the board.

  • @tartnouveau35
    @tartnouveau35 20 дней назад +5

    I think open shelving is beautiful in kitchens depending on who lives there, where it is placed, and if all the pieces displayed are aesthetically appealing (like yours!). In my very small house, my kitchen (which also doubles duty as the mudroom), would absolutely look like the “bad” example you showed. Plus, I have kids, so a lot of my dish ware are plastic and silicon kids stuff, and there would be no place to put that stuff, except for the shelves, if I ripped out the upper cabinets. I think a lot of creators jumped on the bandwagon of open shelving hate because a lot of their viewers live in multi-person households with not a lot of space (ex. they have kids and therefore a deluge of ugly crap). I had open shelves in a previous place prior to kids, and the shelves by the stove were a pain to keep clean because of the grease build up (I’d have to clean them every day), but farther away from the stove was fine.

    My parents have their *very small* water heater in that corner, and also a display of old pots there. Kind of works, I would use the space for placing ingredients though, or a coffeemaker. I like when the corner is a part of a full height wall, and the corner part of the bench is used as a cabinet for coffeemaker, other appliances that you would like to drag out onto the rest of the bench but regularly conceal, behind a jalousie door.

    I really love your thoughtful and insightful content and the relaxed/cosy style of your commentary. I often watch your videos over breakfast and coffee and really look forward to it :) Interesting point about avoiding U-shape kitchens. I've just switched to a new apartment, same sized kitchen. The old one had a U-shape and the new one doesn't, it is two parallel lines. I feel like I have sacrificed sooo much counter and storage space not having the U-shape, so perhaps it's just the layout that is poorly designed. In my new apartment it looks like I have more storage with cabinets rising to the ceiling, but I can barely fit all my kitchenware in here, where as it fit nicely into my old U-shaped kitchen. So interesting.

  • @OnboardG1
    @OnboardG1 18 дней назад +1

    I’m not sure I completely buy the overhead cabinet bit. If you have a big kitchen you have the flexibility to avoid them, while a smaller kitchen can’t have too many of them because there isn’t the wall space. The issue I have with the kitchen I’m planning to renovate is the standard U.K. issue of a medium size room with weird utility point (gas and water) spacing. The size means you can’t omit opportunities for storage while the layout precludes a single tall-wall unless you relocate the utility points. Not impossible but it adds to the cost. I think the trick with top cabinets is to keep them on opposite long walls so they don’t ever “overlook” the space.
    I do love open cabinets though. The new house has a pair of integrated cupboards that I don’t like and would prefer to replace with a stainless steel high-load shelf for my cookware and nicer kitchen gadgets.

    Hi, I’m from Aus. Engineered stone had Silica which in large amounts causes silicosis. It was the quarry’s and where they mixed the minerals to make the stone that had the largest risk to workers.
    Typically in one of these stone slabs the amount of silica is like a cake with baking soda or sugar. It’s not the entirety. Also silica is a naturally found mineral and is still used for preserving food and in cement. The quarry unions just got together and managed to ban it in this specific sector. The government has not compensated any stone masons for this change and a it’s taken a huge hit to these industries.
    I work in dust management so not too afraid of Silica and how to manage it so I got slabs of this stone (before it went to landfill) worth over $5000 for basically free.
    Thought this might be interesting to you.

    I would love to hear more of your thoughts on designing in small spaces! I totally agree with you about corners. My kitchen is unfortunately in a small enough space that I don't think there's room for countertops running on either wall. I think because of this, the previous owners made the counter L shaped. I don't hate it because it means there's still a triangle between the sink, stove, and fridge, and there's counter space surrounding each of those items as well. But I do wonder whether there's a better option!

    Thanks and all very sound and solid points as usual. I think it came from the Tuscan Trend, but stove exhaust vents tend to be overly large and gaudy ornate. Thereby an exhaust vent is the obvious focal point of the room. This us more strange than the weird corner cabinets, of all things to highlight, the exhaust fan would not be it.

    Fun fact. I told my architect that I didn’t want corner cabinets, but in the end I wound up with them anyway and I DON’T regret it one bit. Both corners have pull outs and they are great. SO much storage and great flow. No upper cabinets, windows instead, and all drawer and other pull out storage - including two dishwasher drawers. So much better than traditional dishwasher. I’m a happy camper. 😀

    I’m one of those planning a kitchen renovation and unfortunately won’t make it without upper cabinets or a corner one with the little awkward pullout thing, since my kitchen is all of 198 cm wide and has 254 cm available wall for cabinets. Hell, it’s so small that my rough design only allows one 50cm wide block of drawers under the 2 space induction cooktop, and that’s only if we manage to put the half size built in oven in an upper cabinet. I could have demolished a wall and make a bigger one connected to my living room, but I’m effin glad I haven’t, since sounds travels through my commie block’s vents, which are in my kitchen. And the neighbor two floors above realllly loves bad hip hop.

    The corner kitchen counter is really a wasted space and I never thought about it until now. My kitchen was built in 1957 and it's a typical "L " shaped kitchen cabinet and counter deal. but it does have that "V" flow which makes me think they did know what they were doing. We have our microwave cooker on that corner of the counter which works so all is not lost. I debate on renovating the kitchen because the cabinets were built so well back then and I fear getting a product that just is not built to last like the existing cabinets. I changed the countertop and painted the cabinets which looks pretty good. I struggle with kitchens and bedrooms. In 39 years of marriage, we have never figured out in a thoughtful way what the bedroom should look, and this has been a situation in both homes we have owned. It's sometimes difficult when one person runs the majority of the design look of the house but can't go full in on a design of a space. I'm sure I'm not alone on this dilemma. The main thing I struggle with my own home interiors is the curation of some really amazing pieces. It's always seemed like a work in progress and maybe that's the whole thing with a home is that it changes when you change. It's an endless learning experience and these videos of yours help us figure out somethings. I have lots of art and that's a problem of what to hang. I always feel like making a collection of the things I just have to have and won't part with and go from there or have someone else take what things I do love and find a whole new approach. Interior design is pretty cool and I come at it from a different angle being a painter. I do not have any of my paintings in my own home. It's everything but mine on my walls. It's work that makes me happy and inspired. Is that weird? My personal work goes out into the world and is sold. I have seen it turn up in design magazines.

    What are your thoughts on linoleum counter tops? It was too expensive for us, so we opted for a slimmer and the least offensive vinyl counter option from Ikea.

    What would you suggest for the tiny gap between a free-standing stove/oven and the surface next to it? The kitchen in my older rental is miniscule and the oven is between a wall/cabinet and the refrigerator. There is a gap on each side that collects dust and grease that is almost impossible to clean unless I pull out the stove and the fridge, and that's a lot of work in such a tiny space. What is a person to do?

    If you saw my social housing rented kitchen you would have to laugh or else you’d cry. It got ‘redesigned’ by the council 6 years ago, and what a mess they made of it! Corner units top and bottom, cupboards that don’t shut when you put -lates in them, and they didn’t measure properly for my washing machine so I had to buy a smaller one (nothing wrong with the old one). The quality is so rubbish as well. I wish so hard that I’d never agreed to it - the previous kitchen was designed by myself, with no corner units and loads more storage space. It was past its best, but better than the crap I’m left with now. There’s damp as well now and I can’t keep any dry food in there at all.
