A tip for the rice paper lamp! I bought a stark white shade because it was cheaper, and I steeped some black tea and spray dyed it with a spray bottle to make it warmer. Looks great during the day!
This is my favorite video of yours yet! I watch a lot of interiors content and it's rare to see this level of detail in "advice for subscribers" videos. I like this sort of deep dive a lot and would prefer it over you discussing more homes in the same amount of time.
Totally agree! I’m completely uninterested and unimpressed by massive homes, built and decorated with massive budgets, because it’s just unrealistic/unattainable to me. However, I could look at small cozy homes all day long! ☺️
You are the first person I’ve seen explain spacial awareness with design and how it relates to our experience as whole so simply and profoundly. The way you explain “why” people feel the way they do and why things work in relation to interior design choices is so eye opening and clear. So grateful for you mind and your words 🩵
You are noticing things my brain would never be able to describe. Love seeing in real time how you translate an “off” feeling to actual words and constructive advice.
Excited to watch! Also just wanted to say I LOVED your Facebook Marketplace vid - would love to see more videos pulling together second-hand pieces for a full room. My fave thing about interior design content is helping see the big vision, and how pieces might work together!
Agreed. And the way he described why to go with a round shape, with a texture, mixing woods etc. It made connections I have never had before and was so educational.
The general rule for mounting the tv is the bottom THIRD should fall in line with where your eyes naturally rest when looking straight forward from your seated position. When faced with whether or not you should move it up higher or down lower, lower is always better. Also the bigger your TV, the shorter the media cabinet. Furthermore, there's a general rule for picking a tv: movie enthusiast: 65"-85" OLED Binge watchers: 55"-75" Mini-LED Sports enthusiast: 75"-98" QLED Infrequent Use/Form over Function: 42"-55" LED In regards to the audio side of things, a soundbar is sub-optimal. Audio plays a huge role in your perception of media, and studies have shown that people actually preferred a setup where the audio was better than the video over a setup where the video was better than the audio. For most homes, a stereo setup is far better than a soundbar. The first reason is that for movies and TV shows, you want the actual sound from the speakers to be in line with the center of the screen, as that is where most of the dialogue is coming from. With stereo speakers, this is possible as they sit on either side of the tv, unlike the soundbar which sits under it. Another reason one would benefit from a stereo system over a soundbar is "separation". With a soundbar, your entire front stage is inside of one thin box, limiting the "sphere" of sound it can create. With a stereo pair, your left and right are actually on either side of the TV. If you properly "tow" the speakers out, meaning angle them towards the listening position instead of just backing them up and having them face straight out, your sphere of sound is greatly increased, and the quality of breadth and volume becomes much more tactile. From an interior design perspective, the soundbar and stereo setup both have their benefits. The soundbar is remarkably simple and can blend in. Most possess very modern and sleek designs, so they blend in well with the general modern style. In contrast, the stereo speakers themselves are entire pieces of furniture and come in such a wide range of styles and sizes that they can become a beautiful statement piece for any style. If I convinced you to make the switch here's a general guide to starting a stereo setup: General use: go to FACEBOOK MARKET place, find an AVR and a pair of stereo speakers, and go from there. Movie enthusiast/Sports Enthusiast, simple and easy to use: Sonos Amp + (x2) Polk Audio Monitor XT60 Movie Enthusiast, advanced and customizable: Yamaha Aventage RX-A2A + (x2) Polk Audio Signature Elite ES260 + Polk Monitor XT12 Binge Watcher: Dennon PMA-600NE + Polk Signature Elite ES10 (Wall mount or get speaker stands, do not sit on credenza) Form over function, interior design friendly/ no TV music focus: Cambridge Audio Evo 75 + (x2) Klipsch Heritage Heresy IV If you have any questions feel free to ask PS: There are so many situations, specifically those of you who have two living rooms, where just a stereo setup and a record/CD player are what’s best for the room
As a toddler mom I just want to give my strong advice against putting up track curtains instead of the closet/office doors. It of course looks a lot better with curtains, but looks are not worth the hassle of having to put up new tracks all the time after your kid tore them down by playing with the curtains. Also good to be able to actually close off things like cords, computers and other stuff you don’t want your kid to get a hold of. Based on pure aesthetics I’d follow your advice entirely, but since having a child I’ve realized that some compromises have to be made…
At one point I thought 'stop he's already dead' but all your advice was delivered so non judgemental that the advice sunk in and I can see ways to improve my own home. There's such a constant focus on the new trend or new item to buy that it's great to see a focus on actual design of the space
So excited to have found your channel as I’m in the midst of trying to rationalize my own place after a friend passed away, and I have many of his pieces in my space, so watching you give your perspective on the rooms that you’re featuring, so I can follow the bouncing ball, is exceptionally helpful. Yes the large chest was giving me anxiety, with it’s bulkiness, and I also noticed that the plaid chair seems to have had an argument with its matching Ottoman, which you point out can be more usable once the sofa is moved against the wall, where the chest is right now. Anyway, suffice to say thank you for your content and thank you for your viewers who have submitted photos of their living space so you can walk us through. You are very talented. I’m going to forward your channel to other friends who are in need of friendly professional direction.
I totally agree with the others, more of these, please! When I've watched other people's advice for subs videos (which I love) there is this level of detail that's missing. You gave suggestions and alternative suggestions, it was fantastic. I'd be happy if they were longer videos, 45 minutes for example, or if you created more of them. Like others have mentioned, this in-the-wild approach to making suggestions for real spaces is beyond helpful. 😃👍
Totally agree that in the first one the sofa needs to go where the cabinet is. I think, I would actually do floor to ceiling built in shelves on both sides of the fire place than install little curtains in front of the bottom few shelves to make up for some of the closed storage we lost due to getting rid of the big cabinet. Then like you suggested, I would do roman blinds for the windows because I think with the skirted shelves, there would be too many curtains too close to each other if the windows have curtains as well. I would also leave the closet doors instead of adding curtains. I think that putting the sofa where the wall is would actually allow you to pull the dining table a couple more inches away from the closet.
Thank you for pointing out what negative space looks like! I have several of those in my place so I am literally putting my phone down to go see what furniture & pieces needs moving/ repurposing ❤❤❤❤
this was offered up to me by the algorithm and I am subscribing on the strength of your unjudgemental, practical, accessible advice for these homeowners. I learned a lot I can apply to my own rented space. Thank you.
Hi Noah! With the first house, if the couple were going to go with curtains replacing the doors to the work space, I would definitely do that, and extending them all the way on each side altogether with at least four curtain panels. Also, make sure the curtains are as close to the ceiling as possible, and then right to the floor. I would also use the same curtains on the other wall with the windows - again, from ceiling to the floor. Amazon and Ikea are good options to look for curtains. Also for the windows, The Home Depot for example, have "Cordless Zebra Blinds" or Privacy Roller Shades they could just go with for where the windows are. I'd just make sure they're the same color as the curtains along the wall where the work station is.
I watched 5 of your videos! I love the vibe of your videos because they feel like you’re talking to me individually as a friend! I like that you teach the mind set not what to micmic from Pinterest or famous pieces to purchase! Every single videos I watched so far are so good! Please keep doing it!
Its actually so helpful to go into detail. It helps to understand the system of functionality in the house, and not just, oh this is why this room sucks. Super informative!
giving my own opinions for fun . i wonder if that wood wardrobe would fit in the nook on the left side of the fireplace.. probably not but i think it'd be the best solution. also perhaps that floor lamp could also go in that nook and arch over that chair, to give an adjacent vibe to the lamp you suggested while solving the problem of it disrupting the space by putting it in the corner (that the chair already makes inaccessible, anyway). plus then they don't have to buy new stuff. also i think the little red art hanging would look nice above those yellow prints near the light switch! also cause that bit of wall feels kinda bare
i REEEALLY loved how detailed you got with this and appreciated the time taken. it gave me a much greater opportunity to see how you strategize a space and be able to imagine how you would approach mine. this rocked
This is such incredible advice. I really appreciate the way you gave really in-depth advice and explained why things weren't working. I would love to see more of these!
Been really enjoying watching your videos lately! I just moved into a new place in a new country and it's so fun to be starting from scratch, and you've had some great advice! Around 23:15, I think that empty space is leading to a balcony (you can kinda see the balcony and the handle on the door). Maybe an elevated platform + rug there to create a transition from outside to the inside would be good?
For the first couple, i agree for the rotation of the couch/rug/coffee table BUT i love your clutter (and the asymetry) so if u wanna keep it that way i think its super cute and lovely!!! even the red dog head! i love random art at random places!
So constructive, love the detail, feel like I can understand the improvements when I know the reasons behind each of them, feel like I'm slowly learning a language or tuning my eye
I really enjoyed this video. It also gave me ideas on best practices... please keep more vids like this coming. Normal people's homes. It makes design accessible and also super practical esp for people who feel like design is some kind of rocket science.
Really loved this video concept! I actually thought you spending more time and doing fewer spaces was more helpful than trying to rush through a lot of them. thanks for your considered approach!
This video was so so so helpful! I really appreciated how you took your time and gave so many notes, rather than showing more homes with one or two notes. It helps to hear a full consultation so we can apply those techniques to our own homes ❤
I Love this video! it was fun to see the original picture and guess what you would say.... knew to remove the large wardrobe and knew the second one could use a rug, but thats about as far as i could go in confidence. I love the detail you went into with each one. MORE PLEASE!!!! ALL your videos are amazing. keep em coming! cant get enough of you and your thoughts about styling.
Loved this video! More like it please! I love that you were able to pick up on the vibe the homeowners were going for and you weren’t trying to change that! Just a few tweaks here and there to make it more successful. Truly awesome. Makes me want to send photos of my space because I feel like it would be treated respectfully and actually improved by your suggestions.
This was my favourite video of yours so far! GREAT content - very precise and appropriate recommendations! I’m sure this is lots of work, but as others said, don’t hesitate to make that type of video as long as you would like. I’d listen to them forever haha. Thank you!!!
This was so fun. I loved it! Thank you for sharing your thought process. Sometimes I don't know why I like of dislike the look of something and it feels ambiguous and overwhelming, the way you articulated everything really made sense to me! I'm excited to evaluate my space with some of what I learned today
Wow this was such a great video and you have such a good eye for this stuff it's really impressive. Absolutely loved your idea to move that arch lamp over the table in between the chair moment! Just loved that. Part 2 please!!
This was AWESOME. I absolutely love that you featured very different styles and went deep instead of broad with your advice. I’ll be taking some of these thoughts onboard for my own space, which is kind of a mix of these 2 homes!
I LOVE these subscriber videos! I'm always down to see more, plus your notes were SPOT ON! I don't really have the ability yet to visualize what exact changes should be made to spaces that feel "off" so these videos are soooo helpful ❤
Great video! I loved hearing your ideas and you explained everything really well so I could imagine the "after" really easily. Also I like how you explain why you would make all the changes.
I love this! It’s great advice and will have a magical effect on these homes. As for the high rise apartment, how about a throw pillow in some warm color? I see yellow.
This was so great, I love it. I’m hopefully soon going to have a new place of my own and can’t wait to use all of the information I’ve learnt from your videos!
Loved this format! So many great tips. My biggest problem is that I have a lot of disparate pieces I bought when living in S.E.Asia and the South Pacific ... I don't want to declutter (I love minimalism but the items are not clutter). Instead I need to corral them into contemporary display shelving (on a budget). I will be watching your future episodes like this for any tips or tricks that might help me and others like me.
Could you please do a video on wainscoting? Thinking about authenticity when adding it to a space that previously didn’t, for instance in a modern (30 years) apartment and styling around that.
hi noah, thank you so much for imparting your insight and knowledge. i did not think i’d find a channel from which i could learn - and also finely tune my personal taste. your insight and the way in which you speak about these topics hits me on a deeper level. not sure how else to describe. could you recommend any books that have impacted you as a designer? looking forward to the next one 😀 lex
I loved it ! Thank you! Even if those appartments are quite different from mine, the time and the advice you gave help as well for understanding what should be balanced, where i can improve mine with sometimes just a few but important details! I'm looking for seeing more !
This is so excellent. Something about how you are explaining things has me taking notes in my living room - it's making sense! I want to submit but I already know a bunch of things I can do - thank you!
"A weird forehead of wall" hahaha that cracked me up. I'm always going to be thinking this now when I see people's TVs mounted in a weird way. Btw, love this style of video and I would watch them every single week if you did that many
Don’t be afraid, make the video an hour long. Let’s look at homes all day
i would honestly watch all of it 🙈

Exactly my thoughts, that would make this series super cool
I LOVED this, it’s so helpful to see how you approach real homes instead of just seeing unrealistic spaces professionally styled. More please!!!
All my homies love interior design advice that isn't just clickbait and snarky hot takes
Noah, what you don't realize is that we would listen to you for 3 hours❤. Great video.
I was gonna comment the same thing but I’ll just thumbs up this one instead lol

That was great thanks!! I would prefer these videos to the AD tours as it is more relatable to the average person.

Lots of this is also rooted in Feng shui, especially the balance of materials and furniture placement
The irony is that personal, private spaces are often made so much better with input from others

This was a very thoughtful analysis. Im a visual learner so i could follow your logic while seeing the photos.
This is so, so fantastic. PLEASE, please, please do more of this! I'll take any version of this type of format.
Great video! I enjoyed that you went into elaborated explanations for you design suggestions for each place.
Could you please do a video on wainscoting? Thinking about authenticity when adding it to a space that previously didn’t, for instance in a modern (30 years) apartment and styling around that.
hi noah,
thank you so much for imparting your insight and knowledge. i did not think i’d find a channel from which i could learn - and also finely tune my personal taste.
your insight and the way in which you speak about these topics hits me on a deeper level. not sure how else to describe.
could you recommend any books that have impacted you as a designer?
looking forward to the next one 😀

I'm not watching youtube, I'm learning!! Love your videos
Great advice! I'd love to see photos of the updated spaces.
Btw, love this style of video and I would watch them every single week if you did that many
Me too!. That's an awesome way of describing that space 😂
That was a wonderful analysis. I could also watch hours of this. More please.
Please do a Part 2...3...4... This was very interesting. Thank you!

The Rubber Plant, Ficus Elastica Tineke would love being directly in the window too and you’d get more rapid growth too
