- Perhaps the most viscerally exciting of the Sherlock Holmes' novels by Arthur Conan Doyle. One Baskerville is dead under very mysterious circumstances, and his heir has just arrived from Canada. Meanwhile, down on Dartmoor there are strange lights shining on the lonely moor.

Dear Mr. Wagland,
Your readings of the Sherlock Holmes stories have sustained me through severe political violence in Haiti and a a nasty bout of ovarian cancer last year. Eight years later, I look forward to your readings like a child who insists on hearing the same bedtime story again and again. Your elegant declamation is instrumental in helping me relax before bedtime and kept me sane during some of the worst of my chemotherapy infusions.
Thank you again,
Jamie Cartright
Hi Jamie. Glad the Sherlock tales have given you a boost through your trials. With very best wishes, Greg

I want you to know that you have ruined me for other narrators of audio books. If it ain't Greg Wagland ...i ain't listening! So grateful for your gifts to us!
Thank you, Suzanne for your kind words.
I have listened to this production several times, and can not say enough about the quality of this production. If you have only seen old movies of "the Hounds", treat yourself to this excellent audio book. Greg Wagland does every character justice. Even though you know the tale, I guarantee you will be on the edge of your seat more than once.
+Susan Dombrowski thank you Susan 🦄
THOB and fellow SACD audio stories have proven a Godsend over the last 11 days of quarantine. I thank you & the narrator for your commitment to excellence.
Thanks Greg, you're indispensable now. The consumate voice of SACD.
I have savoured every word of this dark tale.
What a marvellous achievement reading fifteen chapters flawlessly and with such commitment.
This is a must-listen for anyone who loves mystery novels. The combination of a classic Sherlock Holmes story and superb narration makes for an unforgettable listening experience. Highly recommended! Thank you!
Very kind. Thank you!
I daily look forward to that part of night before sleep when I put in my earphones, close my eyes and feel every single word relishing my neurons deep down my brain.Thankyou Greg for such a great experience, your narration adds to Sherlock's beauty. Appreciate it.
This has to be the best story Conan Doyle ever wrote! Just love it, could hear it again & again always noticing something I missed before.
Descriptions of the moor are really incredible, enjoyed visiting Dartmoor as a child, but somehow don’t fancy it anymore??
it's def my favorite. but there is one other story i identify with so much, when holmes says about the horse shoe meant to make cow tracks, he tells the father of the lost boy, this is the second most remarkable thing i have seen here. explaining that the large commission holmes has made from solving the case, 'i am a poor man.' I love that!
But it is this story overall, that's great.
Conan Doyle was under tremendous pressure to bring Holmes back . He succeeded beyond most expectations . There was , at one time , a fascinating documentary on how he researched the story and brought the different elements together -
in a fairly short time - to create one of the classic murder mysteries . ( Docu WAS on RUclips at one time ? )
Can’t help thinking Watson broke this case, he got the Laura Lions connection also the fact that Stapleton ran a school before coming to Dartmoor which lead to Holmes tracing his original name of Roger Baskerville.✊♥️
Is anyone addicted to Sherlock Home stories like me?
ESPECIALLY Mr. Wagland’s performances of them. I am spoiled for any others.
No.
Yes me😃though it’s one of a few addictions!😊
Yup
Yes ,yes, I am!
Excellent reading. Such natural skill in the voice of the reader. A most enviable talent indeed. Have listened dozens of times. Never tire of this story.
Please allow me to say that I absolute love your narration of this story!!!!
As I listen or read Sherlock Holmes it just sucks you right into the story, these stories are books that should sit on everybody's book shelf. They are true classics!
Thank you ever so much, it is very gratifying to know we can find books like this on u tube, especially during these last couple of year's. Very Grateful.

This is a classic. I love these stories. The narrator is perfect
I agree. Thanks Connie!
Favorite story thank you so much you read it so well
My absolute favourite. As a child I got my ma to check under the bed every night for 'the hound'.
She never asked how I thought it got under there, she dutifully checked as she knew I wouldn't
let the light be turned out until she had. Even then I never let my arm dangle over the side
of the bed.
haha 😂
Lifesaver for English class honestly 🙏
Good!
Mr Wagland could read from the Telephone Directory of Cumbria and hold my rapt attention as he did so …. A master of storytelling … Thank you so much sir .
Kind of you, John. Cheers!
Would a more populous county mean higher praise? ;-)
I would prefer a Rowan Atkinson to do that book. Just for the pronunciation of, 'Waberthwaite'.
Excellent reading! If you run out of Sherlock Holmes stories to read, you might consider some of the other old classics. Perhaps Dickens or Henry James Turn of the Screw, or Kipling. Kipling hss some creepy tales, or Wilkie Collins. There are many great old mystery stories, or Victorian suspense stories that many young people today have never read or heard of.
wmnoffaith1 '
thanx
Maybe Lovecraft or Roald Dahl
Yes, please! Dickens would be terrific.
"Do you like Kipling?"
"I don't know - I've never kipled!"
wmnoffaith1 Maybe the Father Brown stories too.
While listening,I felt as if I was a part of investigation and stood in front of each and every character. Thanks for excellent narration of this story.👌👌
This story was the only sherlock Holmes story to scare my panties off when I was a morbid, goth loving teenager. Glad to have this wonderful rendition 😘
You seem cool.
Listening for the umpteenth time. Many thanks Mr Wagland.
Glad you like. Cheers!
Your voice is very pleasant to listen to. I can't wait to listen to your other audiobooks 😊
This is quality listening and it's so nice to hear dr Watson portrayed as main character and not just an ineffectual man who just follows Holmes without question with out the whole play he acts as a alpha mail not just a beta mail
Making ineffectual men slightly less so
Our motto here!!!
Thank you for the hours of high quality entertainment Greg! You're a true master.
Many thanks
As a child, this was the first “book” I ever read. Thanks from Orlando Florida
Well this is my first Sherlock Holmes book and I didn't understand from whose perspective the story is written. Can U Please explain? Thanks in advance
Thank you so much for these Sherlock Holmes i listen to them every night.... again thank you.

Glad you enjoy 'em.
I cannot help but imagine it is Tarkin doing the talking here. Kind of fitting when i think about it, since peter cushing did play Sherlock at some point.
This is great work.
I had to look up Tarkin.
Great actor! Loved his Hammer Horror films (as Van Helsing quite often).

5:32:02 Nonpareil -- the last letter of any word is not pronounced in French, unless it can be elidden with the first letter of the next word, for instance:
If the word ends in a vowel and the next word begins with a consonant, then the last letter is pronounced and elidden into the followin word.
If the word ends in a consonant and the next word begins with a vowel, then the last letter is pronounced and elidden into the followin word.
Since "nonpareil" ends in a consonant and "club" begins with a consonant, therefore the "l" is not to be pronounced.
5:46:42 I was expectin "con - fid - ANT" with accent on last syllable as in French and American English. Could not find British English online that my browser would allow me to open.

I dig Greg Wagland’s voice, even though at times he sounds a little light in the loafers. Like he rides sidesaddle now and then.
You mean versatility? 😅

Yep, right in front of me. I reckon I'm in for a long haul. These do prevent me from attending to chores.
I find them wonderful for chores. A good set of headphones and by the story is through, the house is thoroughly cleansed while the process was a blissful haze.

Great American accent!! thank goodness - when an accent is good, you don't even notice it - it's just natural. i've heard such terrible ones: flat or southern - so many British actors seem to think we all have southern accents LOL
I'm actually Southern and don't have a southern accent, LOLOLOL
I thought Mr. Bertillon was a fictional figure. But he's not.
This is fascinating, how Conan Doyle really worked contemporaries into his works!
Yes.
Am I being tricked? Is the great Greg Wegland REALLY doing all the voices. Can it be possible?
I am afraid so, Elizebeth. No deceit intended - it's kind of what audiobook narrators do. All the voices.

Over a century after its publication, this story is still a genuine bomb. Definitely deserved a reading this good, 👏
Yes, it still works don't it? Thanks Mindlabytinth.
Mr. Wagland has a rare talent for making each character distinct. He portrays their personalities, and their backgrounds, so well that you can conjure up a mental picture of them easily. Not only that, he has the unusual ability to make the women characters all sound different, and female without sounding like simpering idiots - a weakness too many male readers have. The stories become as vivid as movies in the mind's eye.
@@sierraseven3680 I really liked the accents he gave Barrymore and Sir Henry, too -- they fit the characters and help the listener keep track of the dialogue, without making them sound like hayseeds ;)
This is my all time favorite Sherlock Holmes adventure!! I’ve listened to this reading at least ten times and I absolutely love it. Thank you sir for these wonderful readings!
Thanks Blue. My pleasure.

Your Sherlock tales have been alongside me through 6 years of Stage IV cancer. A funny story, shortly after I was diagnosed, we had to stay at my in-laws to get some renovations done at our place. Me and my 8-year-old boy would sleep on a mattress on the floor in the loungeroom. I had the chemo pump in my arm and to help me and my son sleep, I had your version of the Hound of the Baskervilles shared through two headphones - one for me and one for my son. As we listened in the dark, I knew my boy was a little scared and so I comforted him, telling him that when the really scary bit came up, I would fast forward. He agreed and we listened away. The next thing I knew, it was morning and I woke to see my son with the headphones still in his ears - he was lying on his side looking at me. In a moment of a little panic, I asked, “did you listen to the story right till the end? I’m sorry, I fell asleep and didn’t switch it off.” He nodded his head and said with wide eyes, “there was a big black dog with fire coming out of its mouth!”
He’s turned into a fine young man - so no harm there! From all of us out here: Thank you for your work, Mr Wagland!
I have listened to this a number of times, the narrator is a genius. This is as good as reading it yourself! Thank you Greg! A Master Story Teller!
Glad you enjoyed it!
To me, it's better than reading it myself because I make more detailed mental images. Greg's narration is perfection itself.
This is a masterpiece of audio narration.
Thanks Greg. Kind of you.
I love this man’s voice and all of the voices he’s able to do
Hound - one of me favourites. Thanks for the comments!
Indeed the most famous of the sixty Sherlock Holmes books! 'Tis my favourite, too.
I have several voices and accents, but can sustain them only for a line or two. I need to become good at doin what you are doin, therefore am goin to try to learn from hearin you. I hope that you are gettin paid right much for your readins. I particularly admire your timin in the pacin of the beginnin of each character's lines in dialogues.

You and Mel Blanc are very similar, though totally unlike one another. Well maybe not totally.
I would be so curious to know your reaction to Mel Blanc, were you familiar with his characters, such as Foghorn Leghorn (Texas), Yosemite Sam, Marvin the Martian (Mars), Daffy Duck, and others.
They are not like your portrayals at all, yet the similarity lies in both of your ability to portray sundry characters. His range of characters is broader, although they are more like caricatures of a fantastic cosmos, unlike yours which manage to be entertainin in spite of bein much more homely and modestly presented.
I leave out Bugs Bunny because his accent is repulsive to me.

Remember play games and watch movie 🍿 of the the hound really spooky and creepy too
Being American and having grown up on Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce I have to say your reading is a good as it gets. Spot on Sherlock Holmes. I'm very happy to see you do all the voice's. Again a Very good reading Sir. Sincerely William Horsley
Thank you William. Appreciated.
You know Sherlock isnt the cold calculating machine he seems to be when he reveals his love of being dramatic in every genius action
SOME of that could be the "Sensationalism" of Watson
This was the most surprising thing when rereading this. No one shows how cheeky Sherlock really is, they usually just make him a sarcastic asshole as shorthand.
The voice of Mr Wagland is very reassuring & soothing. Like that of David Attenborough or Morgan Freeman. I feel he could read the Oxford Dictionary & make it sound interesting!!! ❤
But the Oxford Dictionary IS very interesting. Washing machine manuals translated into English by Turkish or Chinese manufacturers - now that would be a challenge
My mother often said that I insisted she read me the dictionary at bedtime when I was very small. I don't remember it, but I still read dictionaries, (especially English to other language ones) 70+ years later.
This is your best work. Top notch narration + voices
You read to me every night, as I am falling asleep, transforming me back to the child safely ensconsed in parental love, and with no worries or duties other than to listen, enjoy, and drift into sleep Thank you! 🌺
That's a great message! Cheers!
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio No narrator wants to hear that their work puts someone to sleep.....but fortunately, Mr. Wagland seems gracious enough to accept the complement as it was intended. I completely agree with you Anakrahn, When I can not "sleep with Sherlock" my night is not complete!

Greg, I just bought your Audible narration of HG Wells novels. I was surprised, amazed and then just plain delighted to discover you have narrated well over 100 books available at Audible!!! You sly dog, why haven't you told us about this treasure trove!!! You could have just mentioned that you had narrated so many wonderfully varied books available there. You should know by now how much we love to listen to your dulcet voice. It makes the posting of the entire canon of ACD/SH here, for all of us to enjoy for free, all the more outstanding. You mean so much, you bring so much, to so many of your listeners. It is almost as if your voice magically soothes away the sharp, ragged edges of life. Bless you and a Merry Christmas to all...(even if it's almost Easter)

There is a singular pleasure in listening to a story read aloud. That harkens back to childhood memories of parents reading to us, without a doubt. However, it is also ancient memories of stories told around a campfire. The pleasure we feel is a reflection of how important it was that vital information be passed down via the spoken word. Those humans who did not feel that pleasure would be less likely to remember the lessons and less likely to survive!
2:42:53 “Mrs. Barrymore is of interest to me. She’s a… heavy, solid person; very LIMITED… INTENSELY respectable… and inclined to be puritanical.”

How is anyone giving these videos a thumbs down, they are absolutly brilliant best narrations ive ever listened to.
Jealousy, boredom, bad taste, idiocy....for starters
Very simple. People have different tastes. It would be boring if we all agreed.
@@baruchben-david4196 I agree.
It seems odd that everyone wouldn't appreciate these fine readings, but it only exemplifies how diverse our human tastes are and how challenging it is for us to understand one another. It is easy to dislike those who aren't in agreement with ourselves and our "excellent" preferences. It takes a lot of patience and consideration. It still makes you wonder where the scoffers heads are.??? Young perhaps.
Elementary. Moriarty has agents everywhere.
Greg Wagland is one of the best narrators I have ever heard , pure delight
absolutely
As an actor, I understand how much talent it takes to read, so eloquently, from a book.
Indeed ! A friend of mine made a short film which needed a narrator . This would cost around £400 .
I said I could easily do it for half that amount despite having no experience . I in fact remarked that " anyone could do it " !!
I began speaking too slow : then too fast : then my throat tightened and my voice rose an octave !
Then I made breathy sounds and mispronounced several words .
After an hour we had not completed one page !! It was a nightmare . ! Anyone who thinks that they can simply turn up and talk into a microphone is completely deluded . I learned my lesson that day and my admiration
for professional voice artistes
has only grown since that day !!
It is a real Art !!

Haha! I am a member of a writing group and I thought I'd have a go at recording spoken word homework one week.
I discovered I have a bad habit of 'rounding off' my words and running them together. "Falling in" becomes "fallininin". In fact, somehow entire words seem to vanish like this. I do not enunciate my T's very well at all. Nor my D's unless they're at the beginning of the word. Nor words ending in LE or words with double letters in such as middle or mitten or gladden.
Funnily enough I did record a voice message for a company I worked for when the professional artist cancelled. I had to fit everything in between two 'markers' , and even though I only had to say "thank you for calling blah blah. For books and audio, please press 1" etc etc I kept forgetting my words! I also had to 'smile happily' as I spoke, which made me look like an absolute psycho, lol.
Revisiting this iconic book after 13 years gripped by nostalgia. The quality of the narration is marvelous. Thank you!
Cheers DaSnarky!
