This is the story in which Watson's wife refers to him as "James". People who delve into these stories ( i.e. The Baker Street Irregulars) try to reconcile such seeming discrepancies. The Holmes stories are not called "The Canon" for nothing. The explanation that I read somewhere is is that since Dr. Watson's name is John H. Watson, his middle name must be "Hamish", which, of course is Celtic for James. Thank you for this excellent reading.
Hullo, member of the Illustrious Clients here (scion society in the Midwest). I actually think this is a good explanation to consider. Besides Conan Doyle frankly not giving a damn about his Holmes stories (I personally think he forgot what called Watson for a bit), those who play The Game (taking the view Holmes was a historic figure) like to find these inconsistencies and think of what they mean.
I have started to listen to this storys as a way to test my English, it is my second lenguage. I must admit that I've grown very found of them. excellent work, beautifully read.
As much as I love these stories, it makes one painfully aware of the sad decline of the English language over the past century. Beautifully read, very well done - a pure treat.
Exactly. I was careful what i read to my children and always read old childrens books that were a bit above their level. They loved asking questions and it was a great learning experience for language and history.
Greg Bravo , your stories come to life . Thank you for your hard work. Doyle would be Proud of you Sir and how you bring Holmes to life . I love all of your interpretation s . Your the Best ever. Please bring us more !. Your Stories are Timeless!!!!
Mr Greg sir, have you been honored or recognized by any Sherlock Holmes or ACD heritage society for your good work? You deserve to be knighted for keeping Sherlock Holmes alive for all of us fans. I would love to meet you some day.
As with tinnin fran, I am old with failing eyesight, and Greg Wagland is my favourite Reader. At 73 I spend my 'golden years' as a shut-in looking at my worthless bookshelves yet gladly have a blessing of great British ghost stories and Sherlock Holmes books, I much rather hear books than Hollywood movies, or even English movies of Sherlock, I have the ability to in my Mind see and follow the Books in my personal 'Picture Show of my Mind." I see the fields and streams in full colour, and henceforth I despised Television since 1963 when as a child of 13 watching TV I seen my Hero, John F. Kennedy murdered. I was traumatized and became a Radio Amateur Operator, and I still am, licensed by FCC as a Technician Class 'Ham" operator. My senior housing will not allow Antennas however I can 'listen VIA A WebSDR which is a Software-Defined Radio receiver connected to the internet. I often listen to Famous Ham Radio Operators - Oxley Region Amateur Radio Club
this story kind of makes me think of this guy that was i think an upper class fellow and had times where he would dress down and live a few days as a homeless person and train hop o.o
Wonderful reading, thank you! Like so many of the best Sherlock stories, I was not ready for this one to end. I wonder what would have happened afterwards. What did the gentleman tell his wife? What kind of work would he do now? LOL!
In the TV adaption, starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes, Holmes ends the scene by saying "all is known now" hinting that his wife was told. Finally while burning the Hugh Boon's clothing, his wife comes and hugs him. Probably artistic license.
Very well narrated, listening to Sherlock audio books takes me back in time, and my thoughts make me feel like I'm with Watson and Sherlock, please let me know if you have an audio book of "the four oaks", I wasn't able to find it in your playlist
That ain't ancient sir. Near Northampton I'll take it. Me yorkshire grandparents lived in far more ancient places that ya. 😅😅. Continue with your good work sir.👍🙏🙏
I had a friend in the Navy who's daughter paid for her PhD by panhandling for a year outside casinos on the Las Vegas strip. She went into social services, having a unique perspective in homelessness, and used her experience for her thesis. In the age of social media starlets wanting some sort of patronage for talking on the internet, Victorian-ers begging scams seem both utilitarian, useful, and of impressive durability. Doyle was nothing if not extremely insightful into human nature.
Good evening everyone, some months ago, I wrote a comment asking help to find a story, I got some answers but no one can identify it, so I decided to listen to all the stories in order to find it. Here I am, 6 months later and I did not find it!!! I am truly starting to think that I dream this and it doesnt actually exist!!! It starts describing a very cold and foggy day, sherlock its at the basement making a lot of noise and watson is reading something, then at dinner sherlock tells watson something about a very important experiment (something about bullets being fired, i think) and tells him that if he wants to know about this he must promise to stay at home and not talk to anyone, watson accepts this and sherlock goes back to the basement; then in the middle of the nigth a friend of watson arrives at the house and ask him to receive him. Thats the part where I always felt asleep. If anyone can help me with this I will be forever grateful!!! I am sure that im not creative enough to dream the story by myself but I listened to all the stories here, even the pastiches and I CAN NOT FOUND IT, maybe I dont remember correctly or I dont know... help please!!
I admire and appreciate your work. Thank you. Can you fix the play list? It is messed up again, showing only 30 titles. Makes it difficult to listen to stories in sequence. If this is a RUclips issue I apologize for bothering you.
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio Naah, it's okay. I googled it later and apparently, Sir Doyle himself wrote "James" even though he had previously established that Dr. Watson's first name was "John"... Nobody is sure why. But thank you for taking note!
@@milkknife To clarify (sorry if this seems pedantic), we don’t know if Hamish is Watson’s middle name. Dorothy L. Sayers proposed this theory, but Doyle has never written more than “H.” It is equally (maybe more?) likely that Doyle screwed up. It wouldn’t be the first time. In A Scandal in Bohemia he seems to refer to mrs. Hudson as mrs. Turner.
Can’t believe everyone’s making unnecessary innuendos in the comments and nobody’s commented on Sherlock “respect women” Holmes advising the cab driver to “give her her head” 😤

I know that there's nothing dirty and that it's just words that have changed meaning alot since it was written but I couldn't help but laugh when I heard the phrase "a sudden ejaculation woke me up" followed by "the amount of shag I saw last night"... in todays society, it might be taken a bit different from what it's meant to convey :P

I feel like thats a bit of a stretch. But it's better than nothing. Makes it sound like some sort of an inside joke between the two of them
Oh, thats so cool. That must have been where it came from in bbc version.

I listen to these whilst working in my workshop, a welcome break from the doom and gloom of 24/7 news.

I love the description of the opium den...could almost be there.
One of my favourite Conan Doyl's tales....Jeremy Brett exelled himself playing Holmes in this story well worth a watch.

You are the perfect person to narrate the Holmes storys
It's been years since I heard this one. Then it was Rathbone and Bruce. This was so well done it wins. Thank you.

what does "Dregs of the docks" mean? Like litter and garbage or like something organic if the origin
The stuff left at the bottom of a barrel or jug after all the liquid is poured off. Hence, worthless, of little value.
