    While working at a Caterpillar shop in Key West, FL in 1979, a gentleman came to our shop with a 1957 Cadillac that had a 3208 Caterpillar engine with a Allison trans replacing the blown engine in 1967! He said it was not starting like it used to and loss of power! I found two injectors not firing but replaced them all with rebuilt injectors and had to do a valve lash adjustment as most were way out of adjustment! He drove from Marathon to Homestead five days a week 85 miles to his restaurant! The Caddy had 565,000 miles on it!

    We guys here in europe have it made when it comes to diesel engine in the jk. I have the 2007 jku sport with the 2.8 CRD that puts out 177 ponnies and a ton of torque (the number not on the top of my head). I added the pedalbox and it eliminates the turbo lag which feels like I have 200 hsp. But it doesn't stop there, I have a specialist that can reprogram the ECU and increase the turbo boost up to 1.4 bars which he said will draw me close to 245 hsp.

      You and me both. Might be in the cards in a few years as I've just framed out and boxed out my entire unibody it's now so SOLID and I have a 8.5" long arm lift to fit it right. I would be a perfect swap candidate for one since the stock unibodys eventually snap spot welds once you wheel for a few years of tough serious offroading. I've heard whispers of 30 mpg paired in with some sort of automatics which would be great for me as I've no interest in manual transmission especially for a 50/50 daily and every weekend wheeler but would not believe it till I clocked those mpg myself. Gearing is key to all of it I'd suspect.

    Did these guys do any frame strengthening before they installed a diesel engine in a Jeep. Like sleeveing the frames. Dodge used to have them twist the frames because of the engine torque in their Gen 1 vehicles and they stopped putting them in 1/2 ton pickups only 3/4 and 1 tons. I do like the engine swap tho.

  • @John-uj9zy
    @John-uj9zy 6 лет назад +1

    I gotta give credit to all the work put in. Go for it if you have a passion for diesel. If you just looking for torque, just stroke a 4.0 to 4.8 and do some work the cylinder head. Same torque as a R2.8 but roughly 100 more horse power. I live where it gets cold enough for diesel to gel on a nightly basis for weeks. It's just too much work to make diesel fuel systems reliable in sub zero temps.

    Hopefully it's better than the e-rod, as far as getting your BAR sticker goes. Long story short, the e-rod is a waste of money and requires about the same amount of hoops to be jumped through to get approved. It's not like a cold air intake. You don't get to just slap an EO sticker on and show up at your local SMOG shop.

  • @KurNorock

    That 2.8 is a fantastic idea, and I am glad it is out there, but I just can't help but be disappointed. It is too expensive and too under powered for its size. 2.8l is about half the size of the 1 ton truck engines, but it is only putting out 1/4 the power and torque. Meanwhile, european diesels are 2.0l or less, but put out 25% more power and torque than the 2.8l cummins.
    This 2.8l by all rights should be putting out at least 225hp and 350lb/ft, and should be doing it for $6k. For the $9k price tag they are asking, it should be *AT LEAST* 275hp and 400lb/ft.

    • @eliminster06
      @eliminster06 6 лет назад +2

      cummins historically under powers their engines to ensure they can get massive mileage before needing rebuild, it doesn't take much to pump their power, there are already people with ~200hp and 400ft/lbs of torque on their 2.8's so the numbers are there they just have to be tuned in.

    • @__WJK__
      @__WJK__ 6 лет назад +1

      @rNorock - I see your point, the price is high and (for better or worse) that's about what one would expect from Cummins. Cost aside, the R2.8 looks pretty sweet given the fact it ships 95% complete, is OBD compliant up to 1999 (and eventually beyond 1999), it's also fairly light/not a boat anchor and has a fairly small foot print, which makes for a very versatile/compelling diesel swap option... plus folks are finding they can tune em 90hp over the stock 161hp with no internal engine mods. The price btw has actually dropped a bit year to date and could drop a bit further given a little more time.

My dayly drive is a 65KW HJ45 landcruiser and I know my 4BT in my 6.3m boat is and are the best. I would love the range available with the R2.8 aaand the china girl I've talked to about it make it attactive. In Townsville we have a reliable flow of commmon rail diesels from the wreckers. Is the R2.8 worth in? BTW I've seen this vid before.

      OBD issues aren't likely the only problem, I'm guessing it's also an emissions game thing as well. Which (if true) it figures... given they refined nearly all the sulfur out of diesel fuel and seemed to think that wasn't enough and went on to mandate Def fluid. One good/great thing at least, if anyone can figure out a solution around these issues, Cummins certainly will try their hearts out! Unfortunately however, I don't see the R2.8 being legally swappable/getting cleared for 50 state compliance in vehicles beyond 2012...if it even makes it that far(!) One can hope, but not holding my breath when it comes to EPA red tape.

    I know there's a TON of people out there that have a 4 cylinder engine in their 1997-1999 Jeep Wranglers that want more power. In all the forums, all they are told to do is sell their jeep and buy a new one with a bigger engine, the swap isn't worth it. Will Cummins make these engines doable for people like me with the four cylinder without having to weld on new brackets? I'm fine with swapping out the engine, transmission, and tcase, but I'd do away with the welding if i could.

    • @patrickwayne3701
      @patrickwayne3701 4 года назад

      @Neal Bacon ok, so did you do the repower? Or does the party who did it have access to Insite, to check the fault codes with?
      The description SOUNDS like a protective de-rate is taking place,, and with the electronics on the QSB series, it can be something as simple as the ECM losing the signal from the coolant sensor, or any number of other ECM inputs that are considered 'critical' to operation.
      The 'dead pedal' you describe, makes me think it's a critical signal, the ECM is seeing a problem with because thats our protective way, to be sure the operator HAS to pay attention to the engine systems, is if it won't perform,,, they will (hopefully), have to scratch their head and look it over, instead of just beating it into the ground.
      So, all the simple stuff applies,,, oil pressure (and level, of course), the cam and crank signals and wiring between them and the ECM, the coolant sensor and wiring, the IMTP sensor (Intake Manifold Temperature and Pressure), Turbine speed off the turbo, (if so equipped), WIF sensor (Water in Fuel), and so on.
      Basically, if you have had 30k of operational bliss,, what changes? Fluid levels, and Filter health, and environmental factors like rodents in the shed you park in, and a myriad of other things you start from by observing K.I.S.S.,, Keep It Simple, Stupid. Eyeball inspection of all connectors and wiring, then, a scan for fault codes, and it will become very clear in short order.

    Really .. Cummins should have brought back the 5BT stroker motors that went into step vans of the 1960's and 1970's .. I have a friend with a jeep with no squeeze and it has so much torque that it can go anywhere .. It was about 110 bhp but it did not spin up past 2100 rpm's .. That engine got 60 mph in a 1998 Wrangler .. It doesn't go real fast but who cares with that mileage and that much torque .. WHO NEEDS BRAKES with that engine !!!!!!! Just let of the gas and that sucker slow right down ..
    CUMMINS BRING BACK THE 5BT " P L E A S E " .. That motor in my friends jeep has gone over a million miles !!!!!!!!! .... Low rpm's = less friction = long life = best in class fuel economy = best choice for those who want to trave 900 miles on a single tank ! ..

    I am looking for someone to do an engine swap for me on my Low Low 62k actual mile 1987 S-10 blazer 2.8L anemic V6 4X4 Tahoe. The Blazer is MINT. It looks like it was never sat in. Under the hood it looks like it is still on the showroom floor. The original 2 tone blue paint still looks mint. This was an estate sale vehicle vehicle, I am the second owner. It has been garage kept and senior citizen owned since new (and it still is garage kept and senior owned). The 2,8 V6 is worse than a slug and I do not want to slam a V8 in it. My hopes are for a Cummins 4BT or other Cummins(I hear they have incredible 30+MPG, or I am also interested in the new 4 cyl turbo 300+HP Silverado engine (If I can actually find someone that can get it to work with all the computer crap). I am in Tennessee. If you are up to the challenge or know someone that is, please let me know.

      I thought so too. He said it has 1 ton axles with 4.56 gears so maybe that is most of it.

      He’s jeffery_the_jeep on instagram. He’s also part owner of Axis Industries. If you look at how he wheels you’ll see why it only gets 10mpg. Lol. Also he has a build thread on Jeepforum. Jeffery 2.0

    The 2.8-liter, is the worst engine Izuzu ever made! Ps. It's that engine that comes on the Wrangler to Europe!

      It is not by coincidence that the Jeep practically nothing sells in Europe. Especially the Wrangler !!! And the guys from FIAT have good diesel engines with IVECO(3.0lTurbo or bi turbo) ! They sell them in the US with Chrysler. Is the only problem with the wrangler, gearbox with 6 speeds (and manual), automatic (5 speeds) transfer box 5 STARS, the engine is that sucks, but, great indeed! In my, I moved to a toyota 3.0 diesel, and i smile every day!
      An ex GM company (Opel) also sold that engine, a catastrophe!

      You will soon have in the US an excellent French diesel engine for sale at Ford (raptor, etc.)

    You can now order the JL with a 3.0 liter Ecodiesel from jeep with higher HP and TQ numbers. So why would someone want to sink thousands into swapping in a Cummins diesel. You will void out your powertrain and drivetrain warranty also.

      more AMC Chrysler engine junk...their first new attempt to make a diesel. It will not hold a candle to the VW diesel conversions....in mpg or torque nor longevity.
