  • How My Perspective of a Minimalist Wardrobe Has Changed (and What I Focus on Now)
Throughout my minimalist journey, my approach towards a minimalist wardrobe has shifted and evolved a lot, and I wanted to share those changes with you. I'll be addressing some minimalist wardrobe ideals that seem a bit unrealistic and why, and specifics about how I maintain and adjust my minimalist wardrobe. Today's video is a bit more chill and chatty, so grab a cozy drink and let's hang out! Also, around the 5:30 mark there are a few sound issues since I bumped my microphone, so my apologies!

Your attitude about clothing is so refreshing. I was recently hooked on another you tube channel where every wardrobe item was perfect and makeup was perfect as well. I ended up purchasing a lot of makeup, almost all that did not work for me. Trying to achieve this look was taking up hours of my time and wasting so much money.

It's very easy to go down this path, but I'm glad that you have found what works for you, Ivy!

Definitely agree with you! It has taken me a long time to figure this out. Partly due to jobs I've had, but even later. My family members actually are very clothes and look concerned. Their criticism of my lack of style and color hurt. I pointed out that my clothes were clean and comfortable for me!

I love how with Minimalism there are not any rules. I have a different mindset and thought process now before purchasing things. I have a very minimalist wardrobe for at home (where i am at mostly). I also have a few more items for church and church functions. I like a few other options that I enjoy and will wear. It's not a number it's more of what will fit comfortably in smaller spaces with items that I actually enjoy wearing. Thank you for the relaxed conversation about it :)

I agree. I live in an area with four definite seasons (at least!). I pared down using color. I have shades of black, blue, white, red and green. Bottoms are all black and blue. Everything coordinates with everything, but because I need winter clothes, seriously freezing, below-zero clothes, 90 degree in the shade clothes, I don’t know if truly minimal is even possible for me, but at least everything matches.

it is so validating to hear this! ive never been into fashion and always worn basics (jeans and tshirt, sometimes would make an impulse purchase and wear it once) but since having my child i have lived in these jogger things and when i leave the house, a really old shirt that has threads coming out which has seen better days. I go to a weekly playgroup and I feel like the other parents think they are the only clothes i own. I definitely have stopped caring about what people think and have stopped trying to be my fantasy self and have prioritized comfort over appearance. Super refreshing to hear this take because i feel like so many minimalist wardrobes are still thinking about style which i very much do not have the creativity or the energy to think about!!

You are so right about how your needs and taste in clothing changes over time. I'm addressing this issue now with my clothing. I have very nice clothing that (I used to have work ) in my life. I have donated quite a lot but there's still much to go and it's getting easier each time I tackle the purge of my clothing.

When I decided I didn't need to copy others I ended up down to 6 shirts and leggings with a Hoodie, a shirt jacket and my rain coat.

That's awesome! It's amazing how little we need when we base things off of our own personal needs rather than what society tells us!

I would say 75% of my wardrobe comes from charity shop and when I declutter and send them back I feel I'm giving clothes multiple chances not to end in landfill. And of course the money goes to really good causes.

Only 3mins into the video and your words are really resonating with me. I’ve been feeling so frustrated trying to find those “perfect” pieces as my work, commute, and the seasons change. But glad that that’s actually normal 🙏🏼

I have two seasons of clothes, summer and winter. Some things are worn all year long. My winter clothes are cooler colors and heavier fabrics than my summer clothes.

Sit down with Sarah 😊 So true that it changes over time. I like your use it up perspective. I wear til unwearable like you! Comfortable clothing is a must for me. Funny, I think I wear the same now at 50 as I did when I was 30 😂 I'm glad you're embracing you Sarah 🙌 I associate you with ethical, environmental, sustainable clothing. You inspired me to buy organic cotton when I needed a couple of tops. 😊

Even before watching these types of videos, I constantly declutter my wardrobe but will always have a few PCs I love to keep and keep thinking when I will wear them. I think I just need to be less than perfect else it will be overwhelming for me. After watching those videos of capsules wardrobe I know it is not going to work for me at all. I need clothes for work, once awhile event, weekend wear, ..etc. I just need a two door wardrobe with the feeling the clothes got room to breathe. I has been maintaining very well as I knew I will be frustrated if it becomes too packed. Thus, once I see and feel the wardrobe is sufficient, I also won't have desires to add into the collection. But if i want a new PCs, it is ok. I simply declutter those PCs I have been not sure of. Thus, I don't bother about the count..etc. I just need a wardrobe that serves me well yet not overwhelming. I am happy with my wardrobe and only do a low buy on clothes and constantly declutter to maintain.

I'm 45 and have a 17 year old and a 15 year old sons. I have clothes older than them that I still wear. I have a pair of cherry 10 up Doc Martin boots that are 27 years old. I also have a bolero jacket that my Nana made when she was about 10 years old, it has hand stitched flowers all over it and gloves that she wore to my parents wedding.
I also bought a long line Kathmandu down puffer jacket that lasted me over 10 years of weekly use, sadly it got to worn to repair although I did try and I bought another from the same company.
My point is that cheap fast fashion doesn't last, the styles aren't classic and it's cheap and generally badly made.
Invest your money in quality classic clothing and you will save in the long run

Well I’m kinda proud that I at least got everything to fit inside one standard size closet (Hanging clothes-all seasons, shoes, belts/scarves/coats/purses/brief case tote, slippers, luggage, winter robes, momento box, photo box). Room to spare on the above one shelf. 😬 All my other clothes fit into about 3 medium chest drawers (underwear, stockings etc, pajamas/lounge wear, sweats, paint clothes, swimsuits, masks, winter gloves/hats etc). For me I just like to have all the things I wear all in one general area. “At my fingertips” so to speak (and not scattered all over the house lol).

I've worn the same winter coat and winter jacket since my teens / early twenties even though I've put on weight since then. I bought the jacket in 2009 and it's still in good condition. I've now bought a new one by the same brand and I feel a little bit guilty about it even though I can no longer close the old one properly.

nice video. I brought all my polyester clothing to the secondhand store because I don't like that fabric because of sweating, so I prefer to buy cotton and viscose. I have been doing minimalism for 4 years now it has become so easy. I used to buy clothes that didn't fit well or made of polyester nowadays I choose comfortable clothes I try as much as my budget allows to buy sustainable clothing from armedangels

I absolutely do not care about fashion, for me it's about being comfortable. I pretty much live in stretch pants and tshirts and I'm ok with it (I also work for myself, like you). I think most clothes do not look flattering on my figure so I've pretty much given up trying to figure it out as it's not worth the energy when most weeks the only reason I leave my house is errands, like grocery shopping. lol I have about 12 hangers of outfits, which includes my 2 sets of pjs, and each hanger has a bottom and a top. It has made thinking about what I'm going to wear a lot less stressful as I suffer from decision fatigue.
