Do you know about the mid engine AMX's?
There was only something like 3 preproduction cars made, they were test mules to get the tooling and everything needed set up for production, the bodies were designed and built by one of the famous Italian design studios like Pinnaferina (I'm sure I butchered up the spelling on that one), one of the things about the cars was that AMC intended for them to be moderately priced putting them within reach of the Corvette market instead of it being just another high priced exotic car your average person couldn't even dream of owning.
The performance number's on them were right up there with the best in the world especially handling and braking, had they been produced they'd have completely revolutionized the performance car market in the US, no longer would supercars be out of the reach of your average Joe.
But like so many almost was cars they were killed by bad timing, they were developed right around 72 or 73, between the OPEC oil embargo and the new even stricter emissions standards AMC was faced with producing a car that the actual horsepower would have been way down on because it was an existing engine of their's that would have been grandfathered in but only would have been allowed to keep a decent amount of it's power for a couple years, power would have been down enough those couple years but then after that would have been way down after the grandfather clause expired forcing them to lower compression even more and putting an even milder cam in them leaving then with a car everyone surely would have mocked as all show and no go.
Faced with the realities of not having the kind of money to develop a suitable engine for it along with the uncertainties at that point of gasoline engine's maybe even being removed from cars due to possible future actions from the EPA, the gas crisis taking effect, the ever increasing insurance rates for big V8 engine's and the possibility of gambling everything on a car that radical that if it didn't work out would have bankrupted AMC who was on shaky ground at that point they cancled the program, put the 3 cars away and bet their future on economical and safe vehicles like the Matador and Gremlin.
I believe all 3 cars still exist with one being in Europe and the other 2 here in the states after falling into the hands of private owners over the years, I'm pretty sure the proper name for them is the AMX III, and if you Google that you should find online articles and pictures of them.
It truly is a shame they weren't built because they were fast cars in every sense not just in a straight line.

Jerry Heasley did a mini documentary on that 1 of 1 boss 302. That car got restored with all NOS parts. They never made the car but all the parts were in the catalogue and they even shipped some to dealerships! The man that restored it had accumulated all the parts before he even knew the car still existed! Awesome story.

I really enjoyed this video, especially with the addition of Marty. I’m usually not a fan of additional people but this guy didn’t come off as pretentious or a know it all which was appreciated.
I lived in and worked at the hospital in Carlisle years ago (Iowa atm). I truly miss that town for obvious car reasons as well as just the area and people!

Cool, the AMC was always the bastard child at the track. They would be off on their own, away from other cars.
In HS only nerds drove a AMC anything, until the AMX came out and what an advertising blitz they bombarded us with to make them hip.
Good job to both of you.

Yes you are right the boss 429 wasn’t given proper justice out of the factory they gave them a California tune as well as a soft cam but it’s the potential is what made it great but it wouldn’t be until the 80’s that the restrictions on off-road racing were lifted that people were able to go nuts with the motors and truly unlock their potential

Could that Shelby 500 have been a "Antarctica expedition” thought? Like they wanted to prove them selves in that harsh climate…. Or did it go and not get documented…. VW bug did that and the three actual cars have been lost. No actual documents saying what happened after the expeditions were over. So maybe this is kinda like that but never came full circle or something????
