I just did this. I had to leave the two lenses on the ends on because one was stuck and I wanted to even it out. I think it's a good idea. It's great now. I have 2 OR3 60 blue plus bars, one has lenses and one doesn't. Looks great!! One annoyance was the adhesive kind of peeled off on the sides in little pieces which I had to clean up.

There's a Telegraham video I am sure about replacing the lenses... I think you can ask him as my guess is they are 60 degree lenses and if you replaced them with 120s it would probably be perfect and it would direct the light through the holes... just ask Telegraham on insta what lenses to get (he will give you the Alibaba link

I've got no doubt the PAR would have been crazy high in those narrow locations before, but for me, that's fairly unusable... You could probably find a happy medium with 120 degree optics, but for me, opening them right up works a treat!
@@ParkersReef 100% spread. Covers the whole tank now. I was getting close to 300 par in a lps tank so I don't mind if it drops to 150-200 I might add a couple of lens if I need to to get the best of both worlds
They would be collimating lenses - producing a narrow beam (as observed). So replacing the acrylic with a clear piece would help to get all the light into the tank.

Awesome 👍 I just ordered two 48” OR3 blueplus clones to supplement my 3 AI ‘Vega color’ fixtures . Considering removing optics as well. But mine come with 120 deg optics so perhaps spread might be ok(?) my canopy has 8” clearance AWL though.. I’m mainly looking for added color and pop...but as my AI’s are bit old I’m hoping I’ll also be adding useful PAR for my SPS . Any ballpark guess on what I can expect with the 120° lenses and without? Unfortunately I don’t have access to a PAR meter.

Nice Video - very interesting :) I have 2 Radion G5 and one OR3 90 Bar Blue Plus for my 48x16x16“ shallow reef tank. I angle the bar from the side into the 2 Radions. To remove the high intensity from the bar at my 10” mounting height - should I remove the optics too or will my room be spilled with the light form the bar then because the bars light spread it’s to wide then ? @@ParkersReef OK but be careful because with my PAR meter I noticed 300 PAR more on the surface (bar at 30cm from the water), to take into account for your sps on the top of the tank
@@loustick8484 yes I found with the optics on there was a very strong and narrow PAR line. With the optics removed, its a far wider spread with lower PAR

IMO he's the leading information source on lighting in the hobby - especially if you want the best lighting on a budget - then he runs GHL and Apex (and maybe Ekoral too) - I think you'd love his channel if you had more time... he mostly does livestreams... get's a bottle of booze and does teardowns of products.
@@ParkersReef I have spotting and the disco effect on my sand. Stratons use a diffuser on their lights to mix the colours and help prevent spotting and the disco effect.

I wonder if those black outlines on the splash guard are blocking any light. Seems like a useless thing for Orphek to do other than to making something that you probably will never look at directly look "nicer" That said, things looking good. Brace yourself when the tank goes through first set of "the uglies" :D
yeah I would recommend removing the black outline as it can't be helping!!! I've been expecting the uglies for some time now, not sure if the various bacterial sources or the huge number of snails have kept it at bay - I guess time will tell :P
I recently replaced my orphek bars with T5's and I must say, the deadly laser beam with poor spread is no more. The t5 does the job much better. Shame really, I like the OR color, but they're rather impractical.
You cannot order direct from ofir anymore. Thanks to Aqua depot, you have to order from them so they can make an extra 30% for no reason and you wonder why everything is ridiculously experience in Australia.
I’ve never had problems with warranty or issues direct with Orphek. They are very responsive. When you order, it’s the same wait time as they don’t keep inventory on hand. It’s 30% for nothing and it disappointing that you are buying into it.
It still chaps my ass,you pay just under $200 for a 2ft led bar that literally has nothing to it and they still use cheap ass,low quality Epiled's.. just why... Viosys (385),and Semi's are cheap enough and are proven led diods..fml.

I've just done this on my 40 gallon with 2 or3 bars. Going to do a par test tomorrow at peak times to see the difference

They aren't atlantics, they are Philips Coral Care G2's :)

PAR drops a fair bit without optics, so if you are chasing PAR I’d leave them on :)

yes I am much happier with the optics removed. It absolutely will affect PAR, but I was not using the Orphek to add any PAR :)

More spread. The factory lenses are extremely narrow and give a pretty ugly “line of light” in the tank

With optics on and about ten inches above the tank, I’d say almost a foot at the sand. With optics removed, about three feet

Why not just scuff up the lens with fine sand paper?

Yeah you can’t compare these to T5, PAR and spread is far superior with t5.
