10 years in the Army. - I've eaten more MRE's than I'd like to remember.
Spot-on review. Not bad, not delicious. The bread is dry and disgusting. Having the meal hot and with Tabasco makes all the difference. The coffee (done right) is a life-saver.
    Nice job, Emmy.

MRE were gourmet. My first 3 years were C rats and the only thing edible were the beans and franks ( oh and i ate the fruit cake also and everybody else) , then MRE's started being issued ( first we got LRPS , then MRE's) . I was super amazed at MRE's , it wasn't great but at least they were edible.

When I was in the Canadian Reserves I liked the majority of ours.
Thete was sine cherry cake that I hated and always gave away but the actual meals themselves I enjoyed.

@@Theo-oo4qp I think @plainly took care of it already. (I'm a white, middle class, middle aged man). But just in case... @Charles Lee Ray, you're a dick. When people are actually vulnerable and unwell, even stupid comments that you think are funny can totally ruin people's lives. If that's your intention, to leave a wake of poison... then I guess you are successful in your pointless fruitless life. But by all other standards of decency, you completely fail as a human. There are better ways to spend your short life. Start selfishly being nice to people. you won't feel as bad about yourself as you do now. It's easy. Just hit delete at the end of everything you write, until you are sure you are being a human.

Some of my old camping buddies would buy full case loads of these at the army surplus stores instead of going grocery shopping before we'd head out for a trip. Though while the rest of us loved having camp stoves and fire-grilling, it made a lot of sense for them - never had to worry about keeping their food in coolers with enough ice, or worrying that you were running out of propane for the camp stove - and they didn't have to worry bout animals getting into their food.

They are always saying they are working on better flavors.
My husband is a Marine and he said they are all pretty gross. They eat them when chow halls aren't around and also during different training and during some parts of boot camp
Sadly they arent meant to be delicious they are meant to provide a days worth of calories.
I agree though they should make them more appetizing :/

When my brother was doing his tours in Iraq and Afghanistan he hated the food but needed to eat it because thats what keeps them going. So with his care package I would send granola and protien bars the sustain him, and they tasted good so that helped.

  • @MrRocque
    @MrRocque 9 лет назад +43

I'm glad to see you recognized that the primary reason for MREs (or any military ration) isn't about flavour/looks/smell. Yeah, they don't smell great, rarely look appetizing or taste very good, but their entire reason for being is to get CALORIES into a body. Course, it would help if it looked better, smelled better, tasted better (we're far more prone to eat if its appealing). But, between packaging, long shelf life and the huge variety of palettes that these meals have to satisfy...its IMPOSSIBLE to make everyone happy (given rations, its impossible to make anyone happy).
Some of the very best inovations in rations have been that 'heater' and the fact that everything is 'ready' to eat (it can all be eaten COLD if one had to, its 'precooked'). Unlike the days when rations actually had to be COOKED (the days of 'canned' rations). As well as the packaging, its vastly LIGHTER then rations used to be.
Back in 'my day'...rations weren't carried in by individuals, they were TRUCKED in because they simply weighed MORE then an individual could carry for even one day's needs (along with the rest of his 'kit'/supplies) and were much bulkier (round cans, sardine can type containers....a LOT of weight/garbage).
For what they are, for the purpose they serve...you can live off them, it beats the CRAP out of 'foraging' for sustenance in the 'field of operations', what ever someone's 'field is; be that military, diaster, hiking...they simply are what it says "Meals Ready to Eat". It says nothing about them being pleasing LOL.

    • @MrRocque
      @MrRocque 9 лет назад +1

      Key Whispering
a simple chemical reaction with the added water. They've actually been around for decades; but a fantastic convenience when any other means of heating a meal is neither economical (fuel/stoves all weigh MORE and load out a pack) or dangerous (remember these are MILITARY rations, ppl still have to eat even when under fire, so anything that gives away position, like say....a fire to boil water...is a BAD idea).
Reality is, warm/hot meals makes one far more productive and motivated, they warm the 'soul', its ONE less thing the body has to warm up (if eaten cold it does absorb body heat from the core, that's MORE calories used up) AND it really does aid in digestion (you'll digest MORE of the food and absorb more of the calories when its warm/hot).

    • @KeySquaredYeah
      @KeySquaredYeah 9 лет назад

MrRocque It sounds like one very interesting thing to try!

    • @MrRocque
      @MrRocque 9 лет назад

      Key Squared
just don't judge ALL 'rations' by the one you try. There's a variety and they aren't designed to please EVERY palatte every time, that would be impossible to do. And if you're trying civilian rations, its just another variable in the mix.

My dad was a guerrilla unit (covert operative essentially) for the CIA back in Vietnam. They were always on the road, hiding behind dense forests waiting for the enemy. He said when they have time, they'd hunt down or go to the next village to find some kind of livestock/animal to eat. Of course the villages were all abandoned, they' all ran away from the persecution.

But when you barely have eaten ...you will eat anything. I have a really picky stomach so I usually get sick when I eat them AKA stuck in the porter potty for way too long and then I am miserable the rest of the day. I usually bring my own food but once my food is gone you have to rely on the MRE to help feed you. Thank you Emmy for doing a respectful yet honest yet funny review on the MRE. I hope everyone has a better perspective of what us server men and women have to eat on a daily basis and fight while were at it to protect you. Support our troops!

Julia, Good for you. You are making a wonderful choice in your life by joining the USMC. Not only that... The things you get out of being a Marine is awesome. Yes the pay sucks but the time, sacrifice, and being independent, the confidence and the best shape your body will ever have is an over all WOW. Also when people see a MARINE..especially a 'Female' Marine the wow factor is even higher. I heard things are changing for your boot camp so it might be a little different than when I went in just like when my dad served almost ten years in the USMC. If I can give any piece of advice is to NEVER EVER stop believing in yourself. EAT clean. Always work out. And do the very best you can do in boot camp and after you graduate. Don't loose focus. I believe you will do a great job. If you have any question send me a direct message so it is more private and not public. Best of Luck. Semper Fi.

these are also designed to have over 1500 calories so you only have to eat one a day, although the army feeds them to soldiers for every meal that they cannot provide any other food. i personally make my pb and j by putting the peanut butter on the bread and leaving a crater for the jelly so you don't have a ton of that bread in one bite ;). the gum does have a laxative in it! all these meals have foods that also help the digestive system....basically, the military doesn't want any constipated soldiers ;). you can also do several different things as far as combinations of the sides and main meal. if you mix the peanut butter and coffee, we call it "ranger dip"...you do exactly that, stick it in your mouth like dip and the caffeine in the coffee helps keep you awake and alert faster and longer than if you drink it(that one is my favorite), but there many other things you could do, just google it =]. jalapeno cheese, chocolate peanut butter and candy are like gold in these things!

I e been working my way backwards on Emmys MRze videos, so it was fun to see these old ones. Bad lighting and sound, noisy backgrounds, Emmy not really knowing everything about them. But you can still see the nascent appeal even back then, plus Emmys respect for the product that's made her the star she is today!
    An excellent first try!

I grew up in Public Housing in Washington DC. We were given the left over MRE's from the Gulf War (I think). Fun fact: The Tabasco sauce came in a tiny little bottle back then. It was so cute. It was doll sized. I wish I had kept some.

Very nicely done, Emmy. This is the first "Emmy" I've watched - to match your first MRE. That particular entree is one of the better ones. I eat a lot of MREs when I'm fishing and I've had two of those. You are right about the "cultural history" aspect, in that we like best what we grew up with. Judging from the toys seen, there's a little boy nearby. Maybe he'd like to try some of your test meals on camera to test that theory.

  • @PumpkinPails

Those DoD MREs were the only thing I was allowed to eat for three meals a day for a week during deployment training and maybe it's just because my standards of living were low at the time but I thought they tasted amazing 😂. My favorite MRE was the ravioli one.

I like this Emmy more than the Emmy from the more recent years. She’s super chill here and even her voice sounds a little different. She sometimes tries too hard in her newer videos and people have said that she tries hard to sound more intellectual/ tends to use incorrect grammar or big words in the incorrect format for say, but idk about all that. I just know I like the chillness of this video.

Whenever you eat an MRE you MUST chew the gum that comes with it. The gum is so you don't get constipated.

Unless they've really messed up the MREs since I last saw them (Pork and Rice anyone? D:) you're thinking of the British rations that have the brown biscuit.

    • @vincedibona4687

The gum contains xylitol, which can affect some people's digestive tracts, but only in larger doses. I.E., if you chew a piece or two of gum, you won't poop your pants - chew a dozen at once, all bets are off.

I ate these when I was in basic training for the Air force. The ravioli MRE's were my favorite. Whenever we arrived at the big plastic bins full of MRE's during beast week the MTI's would always yell at us to not be picky and to just grab whatever kind, but noone ever listened. I always kept searching till I found the ravioli kind everytime. So good! lol! I also remember whenever we'd get ones we didn't want we would always be trading amongst each other. Which once again the MTI's tried to discourage but noone cared, pretty funny lol.

Fainora That's why the package attached said "do not eat." Hardtack no longer has to be rehydrated, by soaking it in water.

When there was a tornado in April 27th here, the big one, there was a big scard and alot of destruction (thank goodness me and my family weren't affected that much. we just had power outages, but it almost hit our cousins apartment by less than a mile, it was also really close to taking out my aunt and uncle's house, but it barely missed theirs too [my aunt passed away this year sadly])
But back to the topic, my grandparents somehow got their hands on a few of those boxes like the ones in the video, except they were blue and the packages were more clear. The food was also a pasta. You also added water and it heated up by itself. I thought it was really cool.

If you're in Germany anyways you can also buy "Bundeswehr Einmannpackung" (Epa). From what I heard they taste much much better and there is a lot more stuff in it. Depends of course on which type of Epa you buy, but the big standard one weighs over a kilo and should be enough for a metal fan :-D They even contain some "real food" like a small bar of chocolate etc.
But I think they don't have heating solutions included. So you'll have to bring a portable stove, or an Esbitkocher (if you want to stay authentically military).

I was in the army in the 90's and spent just a bit of time in the field. MREs are still not so great even when you're very hungry. They are basically (sort of) palatable calories to get the job done. We never got the heating bag along with our MREs, we would just eat it all cold. There WAS one that was just horrible, I don't think they have it anymore, but it was a ham omelette. It was the rankest in smell and taste. Fellers had stories of it coming out the same way it went in.
OH! and my sergeants taught me to use the fruit beverage powder to kill fire ants. If you pour it dry into an ant hill, the ants either die or move out. (I don't know which, but they would disappear.) That worried me enough to make me not want to drink it.
You, Emmy, are very brave try these out and very kind not to make terrible faces.

I am a former member of the Russian Federations Air-Landing Forces (VDV). Our rations were much different then the American chemical based ones. A Russian IRP (basically MRE) consists of
    -
Water crackers or pilot bread (200 g)
    Corned beef in a tin (250 g)
Pate or liverwurst (you spread this on your crackers) (100 g)
There was originally supposed to be a can of buckwheat and beef here, but I couldn't remember seeing anything similar to this in the US when I lived there, so replace this with a small can of baked beans or something.
Tin of mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, etc) (250g)
Small can of vegetable and meat soup, like beef stew or chili (250g)
Single-portion packet of Kool-Aid, Tang, etc
    Single portion of coffee creamer
    Single portion of jam/jelly/preserves
    2 packets of instant coffee
    2 teabags
    2 packets of sugar
    2 packets of salt
    1 day's worth of multivitamins
    -
Here's a photo of one of my old MRE's just so you can actually see the difference. i.imgur.com/nguWe9i.jpg
I think it would be interested to have you assemble and eat one of our IRPs.

Not sure why this video has so many dislikes? I'm a Navy Nurse and these are the exact MREs we ate at Camp Legune during training. The ones we had in Combat areas were a bit newer. Thanks for this video, Friend. You are right ! They do fizz and smoke and get super hot! All the meals now have the hot sauce aand condiments packages now a days. It's so nice to have hot food in the field. This video may show your other viewers what we have to deal with in the field. Maybe, they'll be more grateful to their Veterans? Blessings to you! 😘

Phillthy59 I actually, in real life, laughed out loud at this..."An ancient tribal war chieftan."!
Which is why I didn't just put lol. I think I strained my vocal chords because it was so sudden and unexpected.

Just found your videos on mre’s and it brought back memories. My dad was army and he would bring home boxes of them and thats what my siblings and i ate for lunch for the longest time. We thought it was the coolest thing ever. I mean it still is.

Am I the only one who notices her voice sounds different in this video. Like it sounds deeper and not so soft. I mean it’s still nice, but it’s just not as soft as her newer videos. It could be the microphone

raja benadic sorry I meant to say Indian navy.
On the aircraft carrier "Aditiya" they mainly get served rice
Also they sometimes, get a little bit of curry to mix in with the rice.
The reason why they eat a lot of rice is due to how long lasting it is. And the fact that on the aircraft carrier they can get rid of the salt in the ocean water and then use it to boil the rice.
Meat is a lot harder to preserve and costs more money so they put meat in their rice sometimes.
      Same goes with vegetables
