Cao Cao is my favorite from the Three Kingdoms period, with Sima Yi coming in at #2.
Cao Cao and Sima Yi are more alike than you think. Great minds often clash with one another.

He didn't start the war mate. The Eastern Han Dynasty collapsed with the onset of the Yellow Turban Rebellion followed by a period of puppet emperors ruled first by Dong Zhuo and then after his death many of the different provinces formed under their own war lords and began warring amongst each other. Cao Cao just has a bad reputation because of the fictional Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In history he was quite a capable ruler and not out standingly ruthless or cruel.

The Story is quite Simple really... Wei conquers Shu, after being claimed by Sima Yi's decendants from within - And Wu, suffering for internal dispute falters when it's ruler turn to be a tyrant, thus making it an easy prey for Jing (Wei), ending up creating what we call the Jing Dynasty. :D

Technically, Cao Cao was not victorious. The sons of Sima Yi usurped the throne much like Cao Pi did. The Sima family, therefore, becam victorious while all three of the three kingdoms fell.
