That riff at 13:35 (DU\D, DU\D, ... where '\' denotes moving to a lower string) involves an outer-descending string crossover (Up on g-string then Down on d) which isn't found in economy picking. EP would require a double upstroke. What you actually have there is something that only fits into the downward slanted economy picking model (DS-EP) aka Gypsy jazz picking, the system Yngwie uses. It uses a fixed downward pick angle where the ascending-outer string crosses are replaced by a double downstroke and the descending-inner crosses are totally forbidden (since they would require an upward slant). It simplifies the right hand and you are almost guaranteed not to hit the wrong string but its terrible for descending stuff. IMO there are 4 picking systems 1) Alternate picking, 2) Economy == Sweep == Directional picking, 3) Gypsy == DS-EP and 4) Upward-slanted economy picking, which I imagine is very rare and I don't know of anyone who uses it as there main system. Personally I use 1), 3) and some 2). I don't regard hybrid as a full system more an extension to a system, anyway that's how I see it, Thanks.
The way economy picking was described to me is always let the pick fall to the next note when possible. Never knew that you're not supposed to EVER jump over a string. Thanks for the info!
I know I am late to the game, but I kinda got OCD so I go full tilt into whatever I am focused on. I am retired Navy and 55. I am a big fan of Zakk Wylde, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, etc etc. I am working on full alternate picking. Zakk says he believes its more pronounced. I been really enjoying your videos John with a nice cup of coffee. Its kinda disturbing that anyone would give you a thumb down when your allowing us less fortunate wannabe guitarists to gain knowledge and understanding from all (your) years of hard work. Real guitar enthusiasts really appreciate it greatly sir. Thank you.
Funny thing, Zakk uses economy picking for certain things. I don't know if he realizes it. A lot of guitar players do things they are unaware of. Regarding the thumbs down for videos, hey, you can't please everyone! But, I'm certainly grateful you are finding value in what I've put out :)
i think Hybrid Picking will be good if you skip one or 2 stings like go fast from the highest to the lowest string just for a hammer on or something or on clean things if you need to hit 2 strings togehter for any other thing alternate or economy what ever works better for you
I didn't read your previous post regarding alternate picking. I'm finding for myself that it's easier to lock into 16th note triplets (sextuplets) or 4 notes per beat (octuplets) with alternate picking vs the economy. I can't Eco pick well at all! But when I hear someone who does Eco pick well, it sounds a little mushier to my ears. Just a thought.
It's easier for me to lock into alternate picking too, but mainly because I never bothered with economy picking because it just never made sense to me of it being better for faster speeds on most of what I prefer to play. If it sounds mushier when someone plays I believe it's more about how hard they are hitting the strings. You can definitely make alternate picking sound like economy picking. It really comes down to how hard you are hitting the notes.
Dude you are right, the musical situation will determine what you need, but one has to be open to everything from lightning speed to slowest vibrato and from alternate to hybrid. still, I need to learn more about speed picking and thank your input on the technique :)
I've been experimenting with pinch harmonics starting with an upward pickslant using my thumb and pick to do it (I'm also using two way pick slanting too). Been getting a wah type effect without any wah equipment or software by accident . Not sure what's causing it,like if my index finger or my palm is slightly touching the string? What I'm trying to do is use pinch harmonics dynamically meaning at certain parts it's really squealing and other parts have a touch of the pinch harmonic effect. What do you think is producing this wah effect? Can you do it? I'm Trying to figure out how to do it on purpose instead of by accident. I'm also picking only in one spot between the neck and bridge pick ups and my switch is set on bridge pick up (using a Les Paul).
Sweep picking is something I've never bothered to learn until recently, I've always uses alternate & hybrid picking. sweep picking is a technique I've just started trying to learn as I like short sweep picked fills at the end of a riff. I dont know about anyone else but dont you find too much sweep picking in a song tends to sounds like the tune when you win a game of tetris, it sounds awful
Nice to hear someone standing up for alt picking, some of the Eco-pickers are quite arrogant in the way they put down alt.picking but have no proof that EC is better only assumptions which they say as if they were facts. The only fact is that EC involves fewer pick strokes. It can't miraculously make your wrist alternate at a higher speed - fact. And at ones max speed it is doubtful that the stop start nature of EC can be controlled to give an even flow of pick strokes. Its like sprinting, and there is a reason why sprinters don't run with a step-step-step-hop action. I have yet to see a 'high and mighty' Eco picker do a clean and even sounding 3-note per string scale at their max speed (and I doubt I will).
mcquinn01 it's not about "standing up" bro, this isn't some kind of war lol. It's playing the guitar and different approaches to it. People will sometimes hate on other techniques to cover up their insecurities. For some reason, people get jealous or something when someone else finds a better way to do things which is stupid because they're the ones missing out on betterment. As far as economy picking a clean scale, look up Marshall Harrison or guitar god Rick Graham. Economy picking isn't inferior in scale runs, sorry to break it to you. Cheers!
this video was very helpful. but I just started economy picking a couple months ago, and it seems like it's better, but since I'm new I'm just not sure yet. I'm just afraid of wasting time during metronome time
The biggest thing, I believe, is being able to control what you're playing. You can certainly get super super fast with economy picking. However, I do feel it's a good idea to know how to do both in the long run. Kind of like how it's a good thing to be able to strum basic open chords and barre chords along with being able to do crazy sweep picks. I've had a few students who could sweep pick fairly well, but they couldn't play a Credence Clearwater Revival song, or AC/DC song to save their life. Having a balanced approach is a good thing to have.
Awesome... just saw this... not there yet🤣. Dude I picked it back up 2 years ago after almost 25 years... and honestly, I was just picking chords back then... like getting back with my first love
I did both, but I kinda wish I spent less time on economy picking. It never had the clean sound and consistency that I wanted.

Yes, Sir, it is better to be in cahoots, than in competition! Good video!
Thank you!

Always happy to help!
Hi sir can you make altranate picking video tips? It's very help ful for us ..
Anything specific?

FREE eBook on how to make progress now, and reach speeds faster than you've ever played before: www.milehighshred.com/metronome_method.html
Aside from speed, how bout articulation of the notes and locking into a solid rhythm (triplets/16th notes)?
Can you elaborate on this?
Is economy picking still a clean way to pick? I’m have a habit of economy picking things
It is. Rick Graham, Chris Brooks, and Frank Gambale are really good at playing with economy picking. All really great players.
Mile High Shred thank you very much
What's that guitar? It's looking awesome.
Monson is the maker. The Witch is the body type.
@@Milehighshred Thanks Mike!

Too much sweep picking can definitely put a damper on a piece of music for me as well. I tend to use it sparingly in my song writing.
