    I love the size of this tank! Mine is a 3×6. After doing some research on my stock tank pond I decided to coat the inside with pond shield, because the galvanized coating are unsafe for fish. It's non toxic and made my tank safe for fish. You sand off the galvanized coating, etch it, then apply. It's very easy! I've had it in my tank for 4 years and still going strong!

    Try eliminating all pumps, bubblers and filters and introducing FRESH WATER CLAMS. I did this 3 years ago for my pond and I have never fed my fish because the clams reproduce daily and the fish eat some of them while they are nymphs. The clams eat the fish waste and the water is still clear and I can see the bottom with no filters, pumps or bubblers.

    I suggest using synthetic roofing felt for a weed barrier. Nothing grows through it.

    The best thing I found for a weed barrier is plain old cardboard works better than anything else I have tried.

    I live in Florida and I used a canvas drop cloth and did 2 layers of the weed barrier. So far I have had no weeds and its been about a year now.

    Card board for weed control. We put down used boxes from Amazon. Then poured rock over it. We have not had any weeds. Maybe use the plastic and cardboard.

    Really glad your channel is called ‘Trying to be Texan’. So many people don’t get the fact that when you come here, you need to BE a Texan, not change it. Wherever you’re from, welcome- we need more transplants like your family coming here with the right attitude!!!!
    Btw: Clear Creek Koi Farm has amazing fish at amazing prices. We have an acre pond full of 2-3 ft koi and I got some 18 inch ones from her this year that are beautiful. Less than half price for the same quality fish

      Born and raised in Deep East Texas. Lots of ignorant rednecks here. Please don't come here, but if you must, please don't be white trash because we have wayyyyyy too much of that already.
      California gets our college educated transplants (40k a year) and we get all their unskilled workers (fact)

    I just dumped the water in mine because I thought the galvanized metal was killing my fish. How are your fish doing? I was going to epoxy the inside.

    Just an FYI, rotting paper products will attract termites. I had someone tell me to use cardboard and newspaper to help choke out weeds in a flower bed next to a wooden fence. Next thing I knew I had termites trying to eat away at my fence that was pretty close to my house. Thankfully, they didn't make it to my house, but it was still very concerning!
    I'm in FL and honestly I cannot find a definite solution to getting rid of weeds other than concrete. Granted our state is quite humid and damp and thats probably why. Most methods work okay in the beginning but you'll always have to eventually come back and pull weeds. I do it once a week to stay on top of the growth.

    Nice. Have you had any issues with the galvanized tank leaching zinc. I got a rubbermaid tank but i like the look of the metal tanks better.

    • @Lewisusa11
      @Lewisusa11 4 года назад +2

      You could easily put a liner in it and then eliminate any seam leakage issues or leaching.

    • @kermit9409
      @kermit9409 2 года назад

      Or you could get a pond sealer and sand the sides then coat it.

    • @RadRat1138
      @RadRat1138 Год назад

      Or you can let the tank sit in a field for a few years first

    I came across this video trying to find new ideas for my backyard. I hope you are seeing this in regard to prevent any weeds, but the best solution is a mixture of salt, vinegar, and dish soap. It will work, you’ll see results by the end of the day.

    looks awesome, but i was wondering what the exact name of the filter is bc i’m making a pond for my turtles very similar with my grandpa and i’m only 14 so it’s a pretty big project.

    What do you do with your pond during the winter? Do you mind if I ask what part of the Country you are in?

    • @TryingtobeTexan
      @TryingtobeTexan  4 года назад +1

      We have since moved to East Texas, but this pond is right outside of Austin. In the winter it doesn’t get too cold, a couple nights around freezing maybe. You can get a heater for the pond, but we never had a problem with the water getting too cold. The plant we had goes dormant naturally in the winter.

    Weeds won’t grow underneath a metal tank of water sitting directly on the ground. :)

    • @TryingtobeTexan
      @TryingtobeTexan  3 года назад +4

      True! The rocks are not necessary. For us, we had clay soil that caused the tank to sink into the ground unevenly, which is why we tried the rocks.

    A good weed barrier... concrete.

    • @TryingtobeTexan

      It is! But not on a budget 😉

    • @AtomicQuotient
      @AtomicQuotient 3 года назад +1

      I was going to say the same thing, concrete is reasonable cheap and easy to put down and then put the rocks on top of the concrete ... nice video. I am a big fan of concrete, so for me this how I would have done it, but you live and learn. I tried to build the base out of mortar once and learn the hard way it wasn't going to work at all.

    what kind fish do you have in there and were did you buy them ?

    • @TryingtobeTexan
      @TryingtobeTexan  4 года назад +2

      We have minnows and blue gill (aka sunfish) all sourced from a local pond. In the past we’ve also bought goldfish at our local water plant nursery, but they are really dirty and produce too much waste for our liking.
