- Failed Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion Surgery (ACDF) redone + an additional fusion surgery at the same time. After two more years of suffering, I think there is finally hope!
Kevin, you are such a unique and wonderful human. I hope you can create and share for many more years in good health. You are an asset and a beacon of optimism in this otherwise demoralizing world.
Violins do make me happy, and hopefully it's catchy! Thank you so much for your comment.
Yes he is a beacon in a demoralized world.
Omg your a trooper, you went through it without painkillers, I can't believe your voice was perfect after surgery, it's been 9 days and I still have an altered voice and food isn't going down properly. Ty for doing your video
Hang in there! I have other parts of my spine that DO require pain killers upon occasion. Also, I can swallow so much better now that the screws and plate that were behind my throat and in front of my spine are gone, so in a way, I'm glad the first surgery failed. = my optimistic side talking. :)
You've taught me more about violin than anybody
Thank you. There is a whole lot more to come! :)
Best of luck with your recovery!
You are truly inspirational with your great attitude when faced with a truly stressful situation. I wish you the best.
Thank you so much! Believe it or not, the best is yet to come!
To hear you had no pain is absolutely Amazing to me!!!!Im extremely happy for you!
Good energy your way for a successful recovery
I enjoy your videos immensely and I wish you a speedy and amazing recovery! You have taught me plenty about the violin!
Thank you so much, and if you are interested in a particular item in the future, please let me know.
get well Kevin! we love you!
Wishing you fast and complete recovery. Recovering from elbow and wrist surgery myself I appreciate challenges you have to work through. Good luck.
I find that the people who have had challenges appreciate it the most and try even harder. :)
thanks Kevin for the video. I may be having this in the near future. Your experience is very motivating as I am a bit panicked right now thinking about it. So thanks.
Nothing compares to Health and well being.
May you live a Happy and healthy life.🙏🌹
I’ve been bedridden for 8 years and my first spinal surgery was an ALIF (failed as well) followed by 7 more. Sending my best wishes for a total recovery for you friend 🤗
You're an inspiration. I look back at all the times I think about your words of encouragement and help me to keep going and doing what I love. Playing music.
Thank you so much for your comment, because playing music really is the best part of all.
Oh God. I'm glad you're better, I wish you a speedy recovery.
Thank you so much!
Thank God all went well! I love to watch your videos, it has helped with my violin playing. Keep doing what you do, you're fun to watch.
Thank you. I am almost finished with the virtuoso flash cards. It's about all I can do in a neck brace. :)
Thank you for sharing 💞
Hope you have a safe and successful recovery. Keep up the great attitude!
I'm still smiling!

Glad You are doing better! Be careful, We need You!
Thank you. And especially now, I need you.
Happy new year to you. I hope you and family are doing well and the recovery getting better. Looking forwards to your news!
Everything's going well so far. I'm just anxious to get out of this neck brace and play the violin. (Hopefully in 5 weeks!)
@@kevinleeluthier Your time will come, stay safe first!
So good to hear next surgery worked
Wishing you well, Maestro. Best wishes
Thank you so much! If the next set of x-rays look good (in a few days), I'll be free!!!
@@kevinleeluthier my fingers and toes are crossed, sir
Thank you so much for information
You are welcome. This "redo" surgery of a previous failed one is still doing great after 3 years. :)
Hope for a speedy recovery and great results, God's speed.🙏
Thank you!
Man I’m so sorry you had to go thru this because I had it October 8th and it been the worst for me!!!Hope it went well and I pray I never have to deal with it again!!!
Thank you for this video. You've made it easier for me to not feel so nervous about the surgery. I am having the C5,C6,C7 done as well on Jan. 12 th and have been nervous. I also am a church pianist. Again thank you for giving me some faith.
Everything is still going well. My worse pain so far was when a small brown bat flew in my face and I jerked my head to the side by reflex. (really)
I haven't seen bats here in the school in a couple years and I hope that he survives till summer time. (I love bats.)
5 more weeks of this neck brace!!! :) :( :)
Thanks very much for the update. Everyone stay safe. 😀😀
Thank you so much!
I’m so glad your surgery was a success! After my c-section, laughing at The Simpsons was also the worst pain I felt.
Looks like we're kindred spirits. Thanks for your comment!
I'm so happy that it went well for you are such an interesting person and all of your videos have inspired to become a virtuoso. I dream of one day playing one of your violins everything you say about music just rings true to me.
Thank you. I have "lived" violins almost my entire life (playing and making) and I am honored to be able to share some of it with you.
No wonder ! I was wondering where you went after the book reading. I hope this takes care of your problem once and for all. Welcome home Kevin!
Happy Holidays to all!
Happy Holidays! I'm doing what I can and should have another video out in less than a week.
@@kevinleeluthier Thanks Kevin, looking forward to it. Hope your recovery is going well! I pray this is the last surgery you will ever need. Stay well my friend 👍🙏
Good luck with everything and hopefully back to playing and making 👍
amen
I know a little about surgeries as a heart bypass survivor so you now are in my humble prayers also
I had really hoped it would all be in the past, but now I hope at least that it really sticks this time and you’re able to regain the full mastery of your craft
You and I both, because "full mastery" has always been my goal when it comes to making, teaching and playing. That's not too much to ask out of life, is it?
@@kevinleeluthier i suppose we’ll have to wait and see, though i can already say as a teacher you’ve given me a more in depth knowledge than anyone else and where others had left me very bored and disdainful of classical music and teaching, your videos taught me to appreciate and love it as a useful art, and why exactly we do the things we do to learn and improve rather than just giving a list of instructions...
Thanks for posting. I will have a similar surgery myself within the next few years.
Ditto
well I need about the same operation. I am suffering and hesitating. I wish I had your attitude , respect.
Ugggggg failed spinal surgery, nightmare fuel! I feel for you man, as someone who has had multiple fusion surgeries I get it. Very glad you recovered ok, always scary to get your spine messed with!
Yes, it is scary, but hopefully after my neck brace comes off I will "really" be able to get serious. :)
Fascinating. Thanks for sharing your post-op experience. Truly appreciated!
I appreciate your video and sharing what you’re going through. I am scheduled for C5-C6-C7 acdf in a week, also in Southern Utah. I wonder if we’ll have the same neurosurgeon. I too am a musician so I’m excited to finally be able to play once more, though I’m wishing recovery wasn’t such a long road. Thanks again for your amazing, positive attitude and the reassurance you’ve given me of the process.
Manwaring: so far so good, yet it is a long recovery time!
I’m gonna have the same surgery on Feb 9 of this year I’m very scary the same disc c5-c6-c7
How are you doing now?
Thank you for this video
I am going for an xray tomorrow because I fell and developed neck pain. 8 wks after a successful neck surgery.
I've had 12 surgeries - I'm familiar with the battle and I fully understand. Despite all you've been thru, you reveal that grace and optimism are about the best medicine one could have. I recommend "How it's Made" on "The Science Channel"; It's yet to make me laugh, but it's a cool show. God bless you Kevin, our family is praying for you.
Thank you so much.
Thanks for sharing, I’m having a artifact disc removed from my C-4 C-5 and having fusion surgery. The artificial disc didn’t give me any relief. It took me 5 months of complaining to get my surgeon to order new MRI’s. Finally he did and we found out the surgery wasn’t successful. It’s only been 7 months since the disc replacement.
It's so difficult sometimes to get doctors to admit something went wrong and get another doctor to "take a second look," no matter how bad your symptoms become. Keep smiling, and I wish you the best.
I hate clicking the like button on this one. I have cervical issues too. Not in need of surgery yet. However, I seemed to have staved off the most excruciating pain with PRP injections. I also have been doing a lot of work with dumbbells' of 10, 15, 20 and 25lbs to strengthen the neck and shoulder muscles to get more support for the whole area. The issues have almost completely disappeared...(for now)! PT for you will be super important as you know. VERY BEST OF LUCK...
Yes, I agree and I tried everything also, yet I actually shattered two of these vertebrae when I was young, and when the more detailed xrays and mi's showed bone fragments and bone spurs cutting into the nerves and closing off the nerve channels (They took hundreds of pictures, I just didn't take the time to show them all) surgery was my only option. And yes, physical therapy and proper care and posture will be "so" important when the neck brace comes off. Thank you so much for your comment!
I am happy for you that the surgery went well... I am facing a ACDF at C3-5 with a cage device. I live alone and do not have family in the United States... I am scared that I will need further surgeries down the road... and also the details of after care and recovery... I have had a 2cd opinion, and both doctors agree on the diagnosis of moderate to severe cervical stenosis needing surgery. I am 57.
By the way... My husband is Spanish, but my parents were Hungarian, so naturally I am a lover of the violin- Liszt, gypsy music etc. My grandfather could play well and my father thought I would inherit his talent- I took lesson as a child... but I am tone deaf and could only produce an off- key shriek!
I did surgery in April 2021 now my surgery fails same like this Dr suggested some test Nurve study, MRI and born strength Dr said after this test they will decide what's next can you explanation some of your experienc
Thank you so much for making the 2 videos sharing your experience with the fusion surgeries. I am having my C4 - C7 ACDF surgery in 4 days & am so scared but your videos help me prepare for what to expect & your soothing voice helps me not be so frightened about the surgery.
I was supposed to have this done but elected not to. The damage is permanent, loss of muscle mass and strength in my right chest, shoulder and arm and pain if i happen to move wrong.
All my research indicated many people are the same or worse after the surgery so I never did it. Also a major turn off was when I questioned the damage above c6/c7 the surgeon said not to worry that parts were available and I'd be back in 5 or 6 years to have that done- yeah no not happening very disappointing to hear that from the spine center in Omaha supposedly one of the best places in the US.
Good luck and best wishes!
My violin journey is only just beginning and because of that I just discovered your channel so im a new sub!
Take it easy. 👍
I am. With my neck now completely done, I really want to heal properly this time. Thank you for your comment.
They fixed him because his life is worthy 🙌🏾 I'm just a poor old black woman 😢my surgeon literally said to me that he can't help me anymore 😢
Great video sir
. I got an acdf 2 level surgery at 32. I'm 39 now and still feel pain. Drink oxy everyday and cannabis. Feels normal no but im.happy to be alive
Now you know what the violin is concerned about. You were lucky , I generally hurl across the room when I wake up.
I do feel lucky/blessed when compared to what most people go through.
Nov 14th 2016 was my ACDF-( 7.5 months earlier I awoke for work ,and as I got up out of bed, I fell on my ass. It felt like my right leg was asleep. Funny thing was it never woke back up. So Doctor after Doctor until almost 8 months.) I had 2 ruptured disks c5-6 ,that their nucleus material was pressed on my spinal cord.
Well having the fussion surgery never brought back the leg. To beat all else after decompression as I woke and got my head right, my right arm/3 fingers was now asleep just like my leg.
Well the end of 2019 found out that like yourself, my ACDF on C5-6 had failed too. Not only that now it is c3-7 and L3-s1.
I am scheduled this the 26th of Jan to get top half cervical done. Heal up and see what is option on lumbar.
I had applied for SSDI and was denied. That was prior to 1st operation and now here I am again starting both processes all over again.
Turns out that the 7.5 months of trying to get a diagnosis the pressure on the cord permanently caused damage Myelomalacia. I just turned 49 this past Nov and I expect by the time I am 53-55 probably in a chair
Wow. I truly feel for you. I was fortunate enough that when I began losing the use of my limbs, I was "rushed" into surgery and recovered from it. Please take care, and I wish you the very best, and possibly even a miracle.
I'm very glad that this surgery has been successful for you Kevin, and I wish you a speedy and uneventul next 9 weeks with the brace on. Will there be physiotherapy sessions? A good physio, like a good luthier, can be worth their weight in gold :)
I am told there will be therapy/therapies, yet I will not know the extent of it until the surgeon's assessment when the brace comes off.
I’m getting ready to schedule my second surgery. My first went well, other than a hard time swallowing for a couple weeks, but the disc below (c6/7) has torn and needs to be replaced. I hope mine goes as well as yours!
I pray that you are doing well.
Omg I did mine the first time when you did yours. I'm goin in again. Same problem. 😢😢😢
Great healing powers congratulations... I had a neck fusion and my arms are so weak.
Plus my hands burn all the time.
Did you have the prickly burning in your hands prior to the second operation?
Thanks
Robin.
A little prickly burning, but mostly numbness, aching and starting to lose the use of my hands, which was very scary.
Hi Kevin, hope you are doing well. I am also planning to have this surgery for my C5-C7 discs. How quick it was from diagnosis to surgery? I am an international student will be coming to USA with health insurance. Just to have an idea and better planning. Thank you.
I am a fiddler and also have suffered from back problems for over 50 years. The only thing that saved my life was not having insurance and so no doctor would operate on me. Back surgery literally killed my brother Mike, but I was saved with diet and therapy.
I truly hear you, and natural healing is definitely the best medicine most of the time, yet in my case there were pieces of broken bones and bone spurs cutting into my nerves. And yes, I'm living with my other shattered vertebrae in my mid and lower back as long as I possibly can. :)
I was unlucky enough not only to be insured by the military but also owned by the military so I was forced to have an ACDF 8 days before returning to "my normal life" and 3 days before being forced to sign that I don't have any demands for my injuries. I myself was a machinist (my father is a violinist and violin maker) but now I can't do the only thing I loved doing. Surgery has to be employeed at just the right time to prevent further permanent damage but not sooner that the point of no return.
@@Sketch1994 Thank you so much for your service. I wish you the best. I hope that I didn't wait too long, and I can't wait to get out of this neck brace to find out. :)
@@kevinleeluthier Thank you but it's not like I chose the army... In my country there is a mandatory 9 month (now becoming 12 like a few years ago) military service for all males over 18 who are not severly disabled. Unfortunately this isn't patriotic like helping your country... Just life ruining because you can't get employeed before finishing it and you only get enlisted so that the government employeed massively benefitted (like 1 day absence per 24 hours at work and only up to 3 times on duty per month) low ranking slackers won't have to ever get up and do the jobs they are actually paid to do. Anyways... I wish you an easy recovery.
I had ACDF 2.5 years ago and I’m still experiencing burning sensation around the neck and hard to breathe at time. My head is always tightening so now I’m wondering if my surgery had gone wrong. It’s amazing how you are feeling so optimistic . I know it has been 5 months, but Are you under any type of medication?
My mom has the same issues after multiple failed. If you want to discuss a little more, feel free to find me on Facebook
Hi I hope you are well. Are you still pain free? I'm having a C5 to C7 fusion.
Hi. I also had multi level ACDF. Are you still able to play the violin after ACDF?
Hello my friend, I had a surgery after three days, paragraph 5.6 How do you expect pain after surgery? I feel dizzy, imbalance for two years, confusion in the ear, pain behind the head, numbness in the hand and striving in the legs. More power
Hey! I’m almost 4 weeks post the exact same operation as you! C5C6 2017 (failed) then C6C7 May 9th. I am wondering how are you doing now?
I am having this surgery next month, I have had 3 lower back surgeries and one were I have a pain implant (Spinal Cord Stimulator) that seems much more like a walk in the park than this one. My fear is the swallowing as I already have a few issues.
I have the same brace. Basically wear it 24/7. Will wear it for 8 weeks. I also wear a bone stimulator for 4 hrs a day for 90 days to increase fusion success. I had pain pills at the hospital and for about a week after at home. Like you I felt pretty good most of the time. I had pain on the left side of my neck (probably from surgery position) it was bothersome but has subsided. My complaint before surgery was hand pain. It seemed like it may have resolved right after surgery, but seems like I'm getting it back. I'm a month out from surgery. I had surgery to decompress my spinal cord. I have a plate and eight screws now, first surgery, anterior corpectomy.
I had my surgery in 2018. Everything went well but I’m having muscle spasms in my neck bad plus whenever I stretch I feel something getting stuck and it’s cuts my breathing off!!! Please do anyone have a answer for me? Thanks
Same thing happen to me. 2nd go around
😢
Hello Kevin, how's the recovery going hope all is well.
My recovery was as good as I could possibly hope for. Though it was a bit longer than I had hoped for or planned on. But all is well now. Thanks!
Holy crap I had 4 level ACDF surgery 3 weeks ago and mine didn't go near as smoothly as yours appeared to. I don't know how the hell you are eating regular food so quickly. Unreal
I don't know why, but after talking to many other patients, my recoveries seem to go so much better than normal. I usually only have to take one or two pain pills afterward also, instead of one every four hours for a week, etc.. = I wish I could help, do feel for you.
@@kevinleeluthier Hey man I'm super stoked for you and I'm glad everything went as well as it did!! It definitely sucks that the first surgery didn't go well but sounds like you're doing good now
@@kevinleeluthier did u undergo ACDF once again, is it risky or not?
It is a fairly serious surgery, and there is always risk, yet it's well worth the risk if it means retaining the use of your hands. Please be selective and get the best surgeon you can find.
@@kevinleeluthier Yeah I definitely agree and I got three different opinions from three different doctors but they all said the same thing and I went with who seem to be the best out of every thing I'd heard in read about him so yeah you're definitely right
God bless you your super individual
She truly is an angel. Thank you.
Do you know why the old fusion failed ?
Just an FYI folks 😁 if you ever plan on having acdf keep those bags packed as you will be going back for more fun 😬 trust me stay away from this surgery if you want to still have a life!
Im also c3c4c5c6 spinal cord compression my Doctor sajest
me to surjury but some mani problam I hold it im feeling like all finish in my life its so Painful namnes in my hend Leg digestion also bed its like a hell
My surgery was last year exactly today and I still can't swallow correctly and I choke on everything as well as I can't speak above a whisper. I've lost 30 lbs and massive muscle loss. My doctor really screwed up and my new surgeon told me my condition is because of the previous doctor and its permanent. 😥😥
I'm getting ready to have this same exact surgery.. I think were the surgeon wronged you was not having you wear brace to keep your neck straight at all times and allowing you to go back to work even on very light duty.. no matter how you felt..
So I don't get to stay over night I get 6 to 8 hours after surgery I have to weariness brace for 3 months .. im only half way through your 2nd video now..
How many months before you can play violin again? i am commenting mid-video.
The neck brace comes off mid January and I should be ready to go, though I will probably have to have some therapy and refit my chin rest and shoulder rest. Playing without a chinrest and shoulder rest will no longer be an option after this double surgery, but I'm ok with that. :)
@@kevinleeluthier No more dancing naked tango for you, get well soon :)
3 years on, how are you doing at this point?
I need to know after 3 years or more, How things been now , Iv just found out my fusion has failed an now in talks of 2nd surgery an CT scan coming soon
I have the exact issues, cervical 5 6 and 7 with loose hardware 😢
Well, the bright side is that my second surgery over the top of the first one went even better, and as far as I can tell after 2 years is that everything is still holding fine with no side effects other than a slight loss of motion while rotating my neck while driving.
I just had my c4 c5 fused. My neck is very sore and feels swollen.
I feel for you. I know that I am very fortunate when it comes to pain "after" my surgeries. The old style of titanium plate last time did leave it difficult for me to swallow. This time was much better. Good luck, and I wish you well.
I have surgery July 8 c4 c5. Im a nervous wreck.
C-4, C-7 april 2023 my pain back in the neck is make me crazy is constantly is my only concern any help?
I'm no doctor and I have been blessed with less pain than most, but before the surgery the only relief I got was putting a roll of toilet paper under my chin to help decompress. After the surgery fully healed, massage (my neck muscles really like to cinch up), warmth, and sometimes an inversion table; but doctors usually tell you not to use an inversion table, so make sure with your doctor before trying this one. Other than that, always forcing myself to use good posture, even when I'm tired.
Master Lee, what violin do you play??
"The Angel and the Wilted Flower" is my personal instrument, yet I love playing every fine instrument I can get my hands on: my own and the Old Masters. And sometimes it just depends upon my mood.
@@kevinleeluthier i notice that you feature that violin in your videos often. It is very beautiful. Thanks!
My mother also get ACDF C6-C7 surgery cervical myelopathy but she is not mobilizing her leg she is bed ridden now what can I do plz help me......😓😓😓😓😓😓😓
I am not a doctor to offer advice, but something must be unusually wrong or damaged in the spinal cord itself for a C6-C7 operation to affect the legs? If the operation was recent, is there temporary swelling or infection? If it has been a while, I would seek advice from another doctor/surgeon right away if your present one can't figure it out. I do wish your mother health and happiness.
Man I fixin to go through this shit the first time. I thought you were guy from American picker. Now adays you can’t even get any pain medication. How many Motrin’s can you eat.
