Hang in there! I have other parts of my spine that DO require pain killers upon occasion. Also, I can swallow so much better now that the screws and plate that were behind my throat and in front of my spine are gone, so in a way, I'm glad the first surgery failed. = my optimistic side talking. :)

I hate clicking the like button on this one. I have cervical issues too. Not in need of surgery yet. However, I seemed to have staved off the most excruciating pain with PRP injections. I also have been doing a lot of work with dumbbells' of 10, 15, 20 and 25lbs to strengthen the neck and shoulder muscles to get more support for the whole area. The issues have almost completely disappeared...(for now)! PT for you will be super important as you know. VERY BEST OF LUCK...

Yes, I agree and I tried everything also, yet I actually shattered two of these vertebrae when I was young, and when the more detailed xrays and mi's showed bone fragments and bone spurs cutting into the nerves and closing off the nerve channels (They took hundreds of pictures, I just didn't take the time to show them all) surgery was my only option. And yes, physical therapy and proper care and posture will be "so" important when the neck brace comes off. Thank you so much for your comment!

I was supposed to have this done but elected not to. The damage is permanent, loss of muscle mass and strength in my right chest, shoulder and arm and pain if i happen to move wrong.
All my research indicated many people are the same or worse after the surgery so I never did it. Also a major turn off was when I questioned the damage above c6/c7 the surgeon said not to worry that parts were available and I'd be back in 5 or 6 years to have that done- yeah no not happening very disappointing to hear that from the spine center in Omaha supposedly one of the best places in the US.

Nov 14th 2016 was my ACDF-( 7.5 months earlier I awoke for work ,and as I got up out of bed, I fell on my ass. It felt like my right leg was asleep. Funny thing was it never woke back up. So Doctor after Doctor until almost 8 months.) I had 2 ruptured disks c5-6 ,that their nucleus material was pressed on my spinal cord.
Well having the fussion surgery never brought back the leg. To beat all else after decompression as I woke and got my head right, my right arm/3 fingers was now asleep just like my leg.
Well the end of 2019 found out that like yourself, my ACDF on C5-6 had failed too. Not only that now it is c3-7 and L3-s1.
I am scheduled this the 26th of Jan to get top half cervical done. Heal up and see what is option on lumbar.
I had applied for SSDI and was denied. That was prior to 1st operation and now here I am again starting both processes all over again.
Turns out that the 7.5 months of trying to get a diagnosis the pressure on the cord permanently caused damage Myelomalacia. I just turned 49 this past Nov and I expect by the time I am 53-55 probably in a chair

I am having this surgery next month, I have had 3 lower back surgeries and one were I have a pain implant (Spinal Cord Stimulator) that seems much more like a walk in the park than this one. My fear is the swallowing as I already have a few issues.

    • @SusanSmith-de4lm
      @SusanSmith-de4lm 2 года назад

I have the same brace. Basically wear it 24/7. Will wear it for 8 weeks. I also wear a bone stimulator for 4 hrs a day for 90 days to increase fusion success. I had pain pills at the hospital and for about a week after at home. Like you I felt pretty good most of the time. I had pain on the left side of my neck (probably from surgery position) it was bothersome but has subsided. My complaint before surgery was hand pain. It seemed like it may have resolved right after surgery, but seems like I'm getting it back. I'm a month out from surgery. I had surgery to decompress my spinal cord. I have a plate and eight screws now, first surgery, anterior corpectomy.

I don't know why, but after talking to many other patients, my recoveries seem to go so much better than normal. I usually only have to take one or two pain pills afterward also, instead of one every four hours for a week, etc.. = I wish I could help, do feel for you.

It is a fairly serious surgery, and there is always risk, yet it's well worth the risk if it means retaining the use of your hands. Please be selective and get the best surgeon you can find.

My surgery was last year exactly today and I still can't swallow correctly and I choke on everything as well as I can't speak above a whisper. I've lost 30 lbs and massive muscle loss. My doctor really screwed up and my new surgeon told me my condition is because of the previous doctor and its permanent. 😥😥

The neck brace comes off mid January and I should be ready to go, though I will probably have to have some therapy and refit my chin rest and shoulder rest. Playing without a chinrest and shoulder rest will no longer be an option after this double surgery, but I'm ok with that. :)

Well, the bright side is that my second surgery over the top of the first one went even better, and as far as I can tell after 2 years is that everything is still holding fine with no side effects other than a slight loss of motion while rotating my neck while driving.

I'm no doctor and I have been blessed with less pain than most, but before the surgery the only relief I got was putting a roll of toilet paper under my chin to help decompress. After the surgery fully healed, massage (my neck muscles really like to cinch up), warmth, and sometimes an inversion table; but doctors usually tell you not to use an inversion table, so make sure with your doctor before trying this one. Other than that, always forcing myself to use good posture, even when I'm tired.

I am not a doctor to offer advice, but something must be unusually wrong or damaged in the spinal cord itself for a C6-C7 operation to affect the legs? If the operation was recent, is there temporary swelling or infection? If it has been a while, I would seek advice from another doctor/surgeon right away if your present one can't figure it out. I do wish your mother health and happiness.
