    22:46 Shaun Pollock clearly layed out the rule, immediately after the game. The boundary is where the rope is - if a fielder did a slide and pushed the rope out - then that’s where the new boundary is - until someone corrects it

    • @sabertrat
      @sabertrat 4 месяца назад +86

      more importantly it seems like the rope was shifted when Nortje crashed into the boundary trying to save the four by Kohli in the very first over. So the rope stayed that way for 39 overs.

      the problem is, they did not show enough angles in live review. they rushed the decision. that's where people find that could be a blunder. i mean 3rd umpire obviously knows better cricket rules but why give people a chance to find something fishy. same things happened in 2019 final. it was a blunder.

  • @sabertrat
    @sabertrat 4 месяца назад +88

    Fellas the rope was likely shifted when Nortje crashed into it trying to save that four in the first over by Kohli. So it most likely stayed that way for the rest of the 39 overs. Unless someone proves that the rope was shifted right before Miller hit that shot, it's a fair catch.

    C'mon boys. You cant bring sandpaper mentions in the boundary rope thing. Nobody in the Indian team was aware of it, nor was it their responsibility to be aware of it. It is an umpiring/officiating error. Aus did the sandpaper thing on purpose.

    • @sabertrat

      They are trying to bring some controversy to belittle India’s victory because Aus crashed out from super 8s. There has never been a bigger example of cheating than what Ponting, Symonds, Steve Buckner and Mark Benson did during the Sydney test in 2008. And the came Sandpaper gate. And here they are forcefully trying to find fault in India’s World Cup victory. Can’t expect better from Aussies

      @@c3vzn i understand that. Like I said, it was an umpiring error. But one can also infer that them bringing it up implies they are taking away some of that shine from the win. Again, not saying that is their intention. But people can chose to infer that.

    The rope was pushed back by Nortjye in the 1st over of the game.
    The rules say that the plastic thingy is the boundary now. So a fair catch.

Roko legendary retired after winning T20WC glory for India, Indian team will never be same after Roko, Jadeja retired and will be missing in dugout. It was a clean catch if boundary cushions are disturbed it's ICC officials problem to place it properly, India is coming to Champions trophy to win it in subcontinent batting conditions with spin and seam coming in picture as match progress in late winter on placid batting wickets in Pakistan.

    I was there at the ground in the TV commentary box and can tell that the white line that's in question here was not the boundary. The boundary rope wedge was behind that white line and this was the case from the start of the match.
    When the pitch is changed, the boundaries are adjusted. This is a normal practice. This can lead to leaving of white mark on the ground from the previous placement of the boundary rope wedges.
    It's clear from the picture that the whole boundary rope was pushed back and not any particular spot. It's not a case where a fielder knowingly displaced the boundary rope and the ground staff did not put it back to its right place to give a side undue advantage.

    There is no confusion regarding the fairness of catch.The match replay is available free in hotstar..people can go and check there is a replay after Miller walks off the ground from a different view( sort of a bird's eye view from front) where it is clearly seen that Surya was well within the boundary ropes..and the third umpire obviously has got many monitors in front of him and more angles than actually broadcasted..
    Regarding the shifting of the ropes, first of all it was not done by Nortje while chasing the boundary in the first over of Indian innings(as suggested by some) as the boundary happened in opposite end of the ground...but it is utterly dumb to assume that someone from Indian team has shifted the ropes at the exact same location where that catch was to happen and no one from the SA camp or any other non Indian supporting people have seen it and objected against it..the match happened on a new pitch and the ropes were prolly adjusted well before the match in which case the ropes stands the actual boundary for both the innings played.
    These are just narratives created by some people to satisfy their own views and ego and to help themselves sleep at night.

    I have always wondered about the boundary rope position whenever players dive near the boundary. Players set the rope themselves. Unlike in the case of stumps, where umpires inspect the stumps when a player puts the bells or fists the stump, they don't inspect the boundary rope. The only conclusion I came up with is that the rope's position can change (a bit), and the boundary is where the rope is, not where it was before ball one. Kind of a grey area. Who arbitrates the rope position? 3rd umpire?

      @@gotofield7108 The interpretation of "original position" in 19.3.1 is the position the boundary was before the ball was bowled. It would be a six if and only if SKY had manually moved the boundary while taking the catch. Restoring the plastic boundaries to previous positions prior to every ball being bowled is not the job of the fielding XI.

      @@MrLee-gj2jz Do you have a reference for your assertion that it is only the position of the boundary prior to the ball bowled. For me it is unclear. Why are you full of hate.

    • @MrLee-gj2jz
      @MrLee-gj2jz 4 месяца назад

      @@UmpireStrikesBack These are the MCC rules:
      19.1.1 before toss, umpires shall determine boundaries of field of play and which stay the boundaries for the duration of the match.
      from 19.1.1, it is the job of the umpires to check before each ball is bowled as to what is the state of the boundary. It is not the job of either SA XI or India XI to maintain sanctity or stationarity of the boundaries.
      19.2 The boundary shall be marked by a continuous white line or by an object in contact with the ground
      from 19.2, the boundary for the final was a rope through which triangular cushions were affixed upon. There was no white line underneath the rope with triangular advertising cushions. Therefore, the boundary is very clearly the triangular cushions.
      19.3 states the conditions on restoring the boundary after it has been disturbed.
      The key point is no one ever made the case while the match was in play that the boundary was disturbed. "Disturbed" would imply that the rope was cut or the cushions damaged. Nothing of this sort ever took place. if a fielder slides and moves the ropes or cushions while trying to field the ball, the boundary is reset and the new position becomes the original position. This is the case unless the umpires intervene and rule that the "movement" owing to the fielder indeed constitutes a "disturbance", and resets the position of the boundary. SKY did not alter the boundary position between the time interval between Pandya bowling to Miller and SKY taking the catch. He took the catch cleanly considering the original position of the boundary as it was while the ball was in play in over 19 ball 1.
      It seems to be England, Australia, Pakistan, who are butt-hurt by India winning. You need to ask why the English, Aussies, and Pakis harbour this kind of hate towards India. I mean the men in Blue won it without losing a single match. And they were consistently reaching semi-finals and finals of ICC events for the past decade.

    Here's a question to ponder upon: Considering that T20 cricket will be a regular feature in the Olympics (hopefully!) for the next decade or so, should cricket boards of countries be investing in creating a team specific for the Olympics - this will ensure that the regular bilateral, franchise leagues keep going on as usual, while another section of Olympians get trained in the T20 format, and whenever there's a bench strength strangle, these Olympians can join the team for other assignments. This can be replicated in the men's and women's game, making sports a lucrative career for millions in the Asia-Pacific and EU/North American markets. I ask this, since I've been informed that being an Olympian needs a separate level of training to take on the pressures of a 4-year patient wait! A further ryder to this question - should we be moving to a multi-team, multi-format approach considering we have a growing number of cricket formats? #AskTGC

    Some people claiming the feet of sky touched the cushion from LHS angle. That angle (LHS) is prone to optical illusion.The other angles (RHS) show he was far from the rope and It was green grass which plugged out. The banner on the rope doesn't move at all, the soil (with some grass) does. From LHS, It was merely parallax effect effect btwn the shoe of sky, bottom of cushion and the grass. Clearly some grass comes off which is clear from RHS angle at high quality vedio and that made confusion from LHS angle. The bottom of cushion was vertically aligned and some grass plugged out bcz of friction btwn shoe and the soil and from that it was looked like something at the bottom of cushion vibrated. It's confusion bcz of optical illusions (poor resolution in zoom). The bottom (white border of blue cloth) was still centimetres behind when grass comes off. other angles show he was far from the rope.

    Alright, so the official MCC [and ICC] rule for boundaries is : "Section 19.3 states: If a solid object used to mark the boundary is disturbed for any reason, then the boundary shall be considered to be in its original position." I got that from an article on Wisden. Clearly, no one bothered to check when the incident happened.

    • @MrLee-gj2jz
      @MrLee-gj2jz 4 месяца назад

      Whether the boundary is disturbed or not has to be adjudicated by the umpires and not the fielding XI. If the umpires allowed play to take place before over 19, then the solid object that marks the boundary in the position at the start of the 19th over is the "original position". if the umpires do not make the call that the boundary is "disturbed", sections 19.3.1 and 19.3.2 do not even need to be invoked.

    • @_Vish_7
      @_Vish_7 4 месяца назад

      Well, the solid object that marks the boundary before the first delivery of the game is the "original boundary". Any movement back and forth thereafter is a perturbed boundary. It's a shame really that sometimes umpires don't bother distinguishing - they just take the "original boundary" to be wherever the ropes are [even if perturbed]. We don't really know if the rope near where SKY took that catch was perturbed or not. Maybe the rope was in the exact same position before the match started. But I just thought the umpires could have taken longer to verify that particular piece of information. Let's imagine a scenario where they discover the rope indeed had been shifted sometime after the first ball (of the match) was delivered and invoked 19.3 to rule the catch not out (ie. 6 runs awarded to SA). Would they have been wrong? I would say no because it's within the law. Would it have seemed unfair? Most definitely.

    • @MrLee-gj2jz
      @MrLee-gj2jz 4 месяца назад +1

      @@_Vish_7 they cannot invoke 19.3 to award 6 runs. 19.3 only specifies what to do if a boundary gets '"disturbed". And very clearly states that the boundary can be repositioned only AFTER the ball is out of play. 19.5.2 is the clause by which 6 runs can be awarded if a fielder is grounded outside the boundary while in contact with the ball.
      For 19.5.2 to be applicable, the boundary should have been "disturbed" in a time interval between Pandya starting his bowling stride to Miller in over 19.1 and SKY taking the catch. So the scenario you are describing: where umpires discover boundary disturbances while watching a TV replay to adjudicate a fair catch suddely decide to retrospectively "restore the boundary" and then re-adjusdicate the catch, can never happen.

I don't feel T20 is that long term and fans might lose interest in quickly (like I did) but this is only my personal experience. Test and ODI feels much more special. But to build better test teams you need to invest a lot of money in to building whole domestic circuits and training fast bowlers which can be gathered from T20 maybe.

    It's a parallax effect btwn the spike of sky, the grass and the bottom of the cushion (white line). If you watch full vedio and zoom from both angle it's some grass plugged out and comes off in front of white line of blue cloth (cushion). More clear from RHS angle. You can check it from icc uploaded vedio or hotstar. Some pak and SA fan spread a vedio of 3 sec from LHS angle with in appropriate zoom angle and poor quality vedio. Too make more confusion. That bottom of cushion was 1 or 2 cm behind to touch the shoe. It's grass comes off with some soil. Parallax effect. That's why education is important.

    For me T20 is the future of cricket, but test cricket is the utmost pinnacle of cricket. However, considering the future generation which is primarily influenced by youtube shorts and instagram reels, longer format of cricket will be a niche form of cricket. T20 will be the glamorous form of cricket which will spread the cricket around the world. But true lovers of cricket will always cherish Test format. I am doubtful of the future of one day format in the future and for that reason, I want India to win that format in world cup once before it gets vanished from the world of cricket. Having said that, for me honestly, India topping world test championship is more important than winning any other world cups. That is where I want Rohits, Virats, Bumrahs of India to excel next ❤

    The Rope:
    It doesn't matter. If the rope was 6" inside SKY would have taken and adjusted accordingly. We are talking about it because there was some difference in grass. If there wasn't we wouldn't have knew. I really don't think 5-6 inches are taken seriously in practical terms. It should be within tolerance limit.
    The rule: There is no clear black and white rule on this but whatever rule we have cam be interpreted in both ways. The thing is when you interpret it favouring batting side, it look unfair because when ball was the boundary was there. The fielder see the rope, he can't calculate the distance to a precision of inch.
    Interpreting the rule:
    If there is a white line then inner edge is boundary. When there are flags the imaginary line joining 2 flag is boundary. If a rope is used its inner edge is boundary.
    Now, if boundary gets moved it should be brought back ASAP. If not done before next ball? No rule for that. So, if the rope was moved I assume it must have been brought bat to original position before the ball was bowled by the official responsible. In that case inner edge of the rope before ball was bowled is the boundary.
    BTW, these all rule I believe is for the conditions when boundary gets moved while fielding. Like when someone dived. I don't think these rules are for conditions when rope gets slight displaced and it remains there before ball was bowled. So technically there is no rule for this situation.
