Portishead, massive attack, orbital & chemical brothers all UK bands that appeared around the same time with similar yet really different sounds, a hugely underrated era of British music.
It was an era misunderstood, even by myself, I listened to Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Metallica, even some Hip Hop and Rap... I dated an exotic dancer and she introduced me to Portishead, this song was her final song of a set,. This era and genre was overlooked by too many people and bands like Portishead and Massive Attack deserve better recognition.

I love Trip Hop music, is so sexy, mysterious, and introspective. Portishead is one of the pioneers of Trip Hop in the early to mid 90's, alongside Massive Attack, Tricky, Björk, Moloko, Smith & Mighty, Sneaker Pimps, Laika, Smoke City, Rae & Christian, 9 Lazy 9, The Herbaliser, Funki Porcini, DJ Food, DJ Shadows, DJ Krush, London Funk Allstars, Roots Manuva, etc. I love how Portishead mixed Ambient, Jazz, Hip Hop, Spaghetti Western music and Dub in their music.
Portishead were named after a seaside town, just outside Bristol, England, I go there regularly, I like to lounge in a red and white striped deckchair, a cigarette in one hand and a glass of neat Tullamore Dew in the other. I put this track on and listen to it at full volume in my headphones on repeat for an hour or so and then I catch the bus home…weather permitting of course. 😊
Beth has a voice I’d define simply as “sultry” - and the trip hop genre (of which I think Portishead is a headline act) really played to it. God, what a voice.

everyone I know, that knows portishead, loves them. Problem is that many people do not know them. Imho, they are not underrated, but under-represented. More people need to hear portishead.
Portishead and Massive Attack sound as fresh today as the did 30 years ago. Will still be played in another 30 years. That's the unique sound they created.
For me, this is one of those 'after-party' tunes. Everyone else has gone home, but you and the others that stayed are too buzzed to crash out. Out comes the bottle that had been kept aside all night. The lights are dimmed. Maybe some incense is produced. Then music, and you know that the only things you need are either Morcheeba or Portishead. It just depends on how well the party went. If you're trying to come down from a high, then the cheery chilled beats of Morcheeba will do. Portishead, on the other hand, is a soundtrack to late night wistful reminiscing, looking back through rose-tinted lenses. All conversation, however, stops when Glory Box begins. For the next few minutes, and likely more, nobody speaks. Eyes close, and you all inhabit your own private universes. Some time later, someone clears their throat, and you all realise the track finished ages ago. The last drops are drained from glasses, and people finally make their way to bed.
Well this came out of nowhere, I love Portishead. Definitely check out "Only You" & "Cowboys", although all thier music is solid 👌🎶🎵🎶🎵 Can't wait for this reaction
Love Portishead, and the whole Roseland NYC concert is pure perfection. IMO the songs even sound better than on the studio record. They accurately reproduced all the sounds and effects from the record, and than added extra depth by replacing the samples with the orchestra. @Bisscute I highly recommend to watch the full concert. If not for the channel, than in private. P.S.: You should check out Massive Attack too, them and Portishead have been the top-band of the whole trip-hop genre, and are as great as Portishead, if not even better.
That is one of my favorite albums of all time. Every now and then I just take a bottle of wine to the couch and listen to it. I must have heard it 100 times by now, but I still love it.
I like all kinds of groove, Portishead are an amazing jazzy trip hop blues type of groove, if you like this, then you should listen to " Teardrop" by a group call Massive Attack... Definitely trance trip hop.
Well...I'm not sure about creating a new genre. I'd say there had been a very long, gradual line of "big band meets New York jazz-dive" progression, and at a wide front too. Portishead, along with many others, did the logical thing and added a slight bit of background scratching and synth...and there were others in the 90's that did similar stuff. Even bands like Fun Lovin' Criminals though very different in image and style, and went in another direction a lot, did do lots of similar setups: big band with a bit of hip hop. Then again thinking about it it's possible that since FLC came out a bit later, after Portishead's success began so it could've been influenced by Portishead...but what I mean mostly is that though I'm not knowledgeable of the whole scene from so far back (I'm too young for that and haven't researched it so in-depth), I suspect there were many others which I can't name or place exactly?? At leat Beats International's (formed by Norman Cook = Fatboy Slim) album "Let Them Eat Bingo" from 1990 has a bit of similar mix, though less orchestral and a bit more removed from jazz or big band. Their song "Dub Be Good to Me" certainly has much of similar musical style, singing. Then look at that song's origins from all the way back in 1983: The S.O.S. band's "Just be Good To Me". They have that big orchestra setup, just even more synthy and a bit more pop-style. So go in between The S.O.S. Band and Beats International... After all big band type music has always tended to add "modern" and "edgy" frills to their music. And in general so many groups used the same instruments, then as new instruments came along tested and played around with the same instruments. Many combined these styles. So many had Big Band/Jazz background but added modern touches, some went even more modern in fact already since the '80's I'd argue! Then coming from another slant, hip-hop groups have often had a very tight connection with swing jazz too. Bands like Roots (Organix, from '93) and Digable Planets (Reachin', '93)were weighted more on the rythmic side, but they clearly had that connection between the two. And I only know a bit of the surface, so for sure there have been a wide variety of bands from the 80's to the 90's working up that evolution from big band and swing jazz into something that included elements of hip hop and electronic music. It's a natural progression, something one would expect. I disagree that there was any revolution nor sudden change.
Glad you enjoyed Portishead. Dummy has been my favorite album since it came out all those years ago. Nice to see a new generation appreciate their genius.

I saw them live at the Lowlands Festival in the Netherlands, back in 1998. Without the whole orchestra, but I was amazed on how good they were live, being mostly an EDM formation. I allready loved them, but that first time seeing them live, gave me a whole new level of respect.
I actually have every Album they've put out on vinal, even the collectors as well as Beth's solo work..the Roseland NYC DVD is priceless. Every track on there is great and the music videos as well. Cheers to all Portishead fans! 👍💯

Portishead is for me the best band, and Beth Gibbons has the most beautiful voice of the whole world, there is no other artist that makes me feel the way that she does, so tender, powerful, intimate, happy, sad, reflective, soft, mellow, strong at the same time, only 3 album and her one album with Rusty Man, but the less is more, I hope see more reactions to portishead. greetings

Portishead at the peak of their powers. Hat tip to the sound engineer who was on the top of their game here. I love her humility. Her voice has that wonderful mix of fragility, vulnerability and sheer force.quire remarkable really.

Being English and growing up in the 90’s this band is in my DNA , I grew up with them 🙏❤️🇬🇧🏴.
How did we go from this to Sam Smith, Lizzo, Cardi B, Harry Styles... etc. Music is dead, long live the music that lived.
