"Glory Box" sounds familiar because it's in everywhere......Bertolucci's Stealing Beauty, episodes in CSI, Numb3rs and The Handmaid's Tale, commericials of Heineken, Levi's 501 and Guerlain perfume, to name a few. The iconic trippy vibes makes it a perfect sonic background for mystery and sensual scenes, and for products which want to project a classy image.
Beth is still doing the business. She released a brand new solo album in May called "Lives Outgrown". Her views on life approaching 60 and directly influenced by the deaths of family and friends over the preceding several years. Nominated for the 2024 Mercury Prize.
The whole of the first two Portishead albums - 'Dummy' and 'Portishead' are perfection. The third one probably is as well but I've only heard a couple of tracks so I couldn't say. But 1 and 2 are just brillant. This NY performance had a few tracks off the 2nd album as well.
If you recognise the tune, then you might be thinking of Tricky - "Hell is round the corner" which used exactly the same sample as both bands are from Bristol.
OMG I know what you mean about the cigarette. I was a smoker for 40 years, and I quit 10 years ago now. My cravings are long gone, but occasionally in a film or other pop culture reference, someone is smoking a cigarette, and I have a momentary "Just one puff please!" flash. Fortunately I can talk myself out of it now. 🙂
Nice! One of my high school faves 😀 The same Isaac Hayes sample was also used in the 2015 pop song "Here" by Alessia Cara, so you might have heard it there.
Ahhhhh yea! Breathtaking!!! I quit smoking the same day I quit drinking too! That's the stuff that NIGHTMARES are made of! 😅 Barely made it out alive. Lol
@@SaeedReacts. hence why I thought that you might have heard it. The opening groove of both songs (not the strings) is I believe sampled originally from the same source.
@@SaeedReacts. Obviously it's all a matter of taste, but I'm bemused at the esteem for Zombie, which I believe was their biggest (only?) hit in the USA. Their best singles are Linger and Dreams, from the first album.
Her attitude... she's a goddness.

Definitely heard it in of those or more. So good!

One of the coolest performances. She just oozes cool. This type of sound encapsulates my early adulthood.

Thanks for letting me know.
Sounds like a very personal project.
It also touches on menopause and stuff. Phenominal album
Portishead and some of Tricky come out of that period still so very strong.

The most undodgy performance that I have heard 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Stay strong out there my friend!
Dummy is one of the best albums of the 90's, if not ever.
Last I looked, no one had reacted to Mourning Air, from their second album. You won't regret it!
All of that Live At Roseland NY session is incredible. Gonna have to pull that out and give it a listen again I reckon.

That might be it. Will have a listen
From what I remember Beth Gibbons the lead singer had crippling stage fright, hence the apology at the end. The whole Dummy album is a classic.
Beth Gibbons. The last of the red hot torch singers.
we miss you beth. Aguante portishead carajooo
Huge hit. Maybe that's why you know it. You can continue with this live. Every song is better than the studio version.
So good! I definitely must have heard it somewhere.
Roads❤
@@chrislemoh2019 my favorite one is sour time (from this live CD, I don't like the studio version)
The sample that is used are from Isaak Hayes “ike’s rap II” it’s been used in several other songs, but this is probably the most famous I’ll guess.
Great reaction! 👍
Thank you!
So great ❤ You're really checking out some deeper stuff, love it. Thank you ❤
Love this song and performance! Thanks for watching
This is stellar!!!
So cool. I'm helpless in Beth's sound.
I hope your next Portishead reaction is "Sour Times". 🙂
I have seen that title a few times! Must a be a good one 😃
@@SaeedReacts. It's the song that put them on the map.
"Sour Times" is wonderful. I also recommend Martha Ambrosius's cover of it.

Its been 3 years for me now, but sometimes you get those momentary flashes as you say. Nostalgia has a lot do with it i suspect. 😃

Definitely had some nightmares too, even some when i was awake 😅.
This song is so good! And amazing performance.
@@SaeedReacts. Lol! 😁 Yes. Pure torture. The smoking might have been the most horrible thing to quit, AND THAT'S SAYING A LOT. ❤️
Don't you dare start again sir! Lol
I won't, i won't :) The smoke only exists in my mind now :)
Maybe you remember the sample from Issac Hayes "Ike's Rap II"
I reacted to it right before this! But i did recognize the song from somewhere else too.
You said it sounded familiar from the beginning and I think I know why: listen to Hooverphonic’s 2 Wicky 😮
Thats a Belgian band!

Yeah, Isaac Hayes's "Ike's Rap II".
I just reacted to that one yesterday. So good!
And this song really makes great use of the sample
Just awesome, you might also like The Cranberries - Zombie 😉
That is one i do know. Maybe i should find a live version.

I think if you listen to “ it makes no difference “ by the band you’ll enjoy 😁
Thanks for that recommendation!
Reminds me of a Czech group Kalle. They don't have as good singer as Portishead, but better guitars I think.
Should I care whether you have heard it before ?
Should you?
