I was expecting the video to be more about chord changes and that kind of things but Im not dissapointed!. Great video about how to get fresh ideas for making songs
cheers, Nicolas. I could make a dozen vids on this guy. I wanted to do something a bit different from the usual "bowies cut-up technique", having said that using the cut-up technique with the chords and their parallel modes, that I mention at the end of the vid, is a pretty interesting technique. every time I do it the progressions turn out very Bowie ish. thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you got some value from it.
Hi Tony, great upload very informative. Love Bowie, Hunky Dory has got to be one of my all time fav LPs (showing my age lol). Great that you added your own creation at the end, really nice hope you include more of your own work in later vids. Dawn x
Cheers Dawn. Bowie was truly a unique talent and a wealth of creative knowledge. I could make a dozen more videos on his genius. Changes and life on mars, has anyone even come close to that level of songwriting. Glad you liked the little piece at the end, at least now I can say I got to collaborate with David Bowie.
yeah, It can be difficult to know what direction to go in sometimes. So, would you say the problem is too many ideas or not being able to decide which idea to develop? If you could give me an example I might be able to give you some possible solutions. Cheers Jason.
@SongWriters Chop Shop I lose the original feel or inspiration getting distracted in technical direction. The songs come out decent, but lack the raw emotional origin. Like if I really just want to go off, I end up losing sight of that over chord development or and endless rewrite of what the song means searching for a title/chorus. I appreciate the response btw. Great channel.ive been sort of addicted.
@@jasoncabral8732 Cheers man, great to hear you are getting some value from the content. I am going to put a video together addressing these problems, can you give the names of a couple of songs that you like and I can use them as examples. Also, would you say you need some tips on creating chord progressions, finding good titles and creating a chorus?
@SongWriters Chop Shop Angel by Jimi Hendrix. The Sky is a Landfill Jeff Buckley. Time Marches On The Wipets...I have a decent handle on developing chord progressions. I can create sequences I like. Putting it all together as an arrangement is ok...but can always use tips. If you asked me to write an ok song in 30 minutes I feel like I can do that. Crafting a whole song where the components really create the feeling I have...I get distracted and it's 50/50 if I get there or trash the effort. Thanks for responding.
You've become my favorite person on RUclips. I just let you videos play while I sleep hoping it'll all sink in :) after watching some to relax of course
@@SongWritersChopShop it made me realize how much Beck does just what you mention, especially in terms of synthetizing pop statements, lyrically & musically
hi songwriters chop shop! i was wondering if you could do an analysis video on the weeknd’s songwriting process. he’s a really poppin artist this past decade and today and i was wondering what the science was behind his songwriting. is it the catchy melodies? his deep lyrics/meaning? pop song structure? his image?
This is so helpful thanks so much. I write lyrics easily enough, but I'm having a hard time putting music to them. The end of this video has helped me so much. Thanks again
Nice one Sam, glad it helped. If you have any other questions about putting music to your lyrics, just let me know. Really appreciate the comment, thanks.
5:09 I’m about 1/2 way thru Bowie being used as a voice over for this horrible canned guitar Muzak loop and I’m honestly struggling to keep going…. 😬🥴😬
I know this may sound rather legalistic or nitpicky but so many content creators grammatically screw up the tenses of "run" & "ran". Also, the words "saw" & "seen" or "gone" & "went", as in this video. (1:30) I grew up in a house with an English teacher mom, so forgive me but it was instilled into me and it hurts my brain when I hear the incorrect tenses used.
you're right, it does sound nitpicky, words are just sounds that communicate ideas. let it go mate. JK, thanks for pulling me up on it. hope you enjoyed the vid otherwise.
I hate the guitar you added in the background can you do some videos without it because I enjoy the content but I find the continuous guitar intolerable
Hey there, let me know which of the tips you're going to use first?
Ton, can you do a video on Prince's Songwriting techniques/process?
@@salfrank1749 Yeah prince would make a great video. Max Martin uses some of his techniques. I'll start looking into it, thanks for the suggestion.
@@SongWritersChopShop You da man
That guitar loop is painful otherwise great info on songwriting thanks.
I used to think Bowie got his inspiration from shamen. What a guy. Great vid matey.
Cheers mate, I loved diving into his process. I learned so much, could have done an hour long video but I ran out of tape!

I get overwhelmed by the amount of ideas I come up with. I get lost and the song dies from frustration.

You cover a crap load of Michael Jackson and other artists like him then add a modern touch. That's it.

What is the background music in the beginning of the video
It's a song called 'nothing in the world' by a band called 'mad fantastic', ruclips.net/video/ubhlTP_OtNs/видео.html

Do you want to listen it
I dont think you need all the b roll.
Cheers Jonathan, thanks for the feedback. I have cut back on the b roll in the more recent vids, some people were saying it was too distracting.
That's not how you spell "genius" :D
I know, it's a nod to Bowie's quirkiness. you're the first person to comment on it. I was wondering would anyone get it! cheers 😂
Please, the visuals are so distracting! Please make them less! Lol
yep, that was one of my first videos. the visuals have calmed down since then, thanks for the feedback.
