Trump's Border Wall Has Left a Complicated Legacy

  • On his first day in office, President Biden halted construction on the US-Mexico border wall- a project launched under the Trump administration, and one that remains one of the most expensive and controversial border projects in US history. Today, it remains incomplete. But for many living along the wall, the issue of how to best regulate the border is not clear cut.
Vice News traveled to the US-Mexico border to talk to people from El Paso, Texas to Naco, Arizona to find out what impact the wall and years of failed policies have had for people along the border.

The reason there’s no border between Canada and the US is because most Canadians are better off staying here than going to the US. That isn’t the case for Mexico though.

I don't think most people are pro illegal immigration, by that I mean okay with having no immigration policies. People are anti against what they view as inhumane, unsustainable, or ineffective treatment of illegal immigrants. Also the immigration policy in the U.S. is highly restrictive often hurting people who genuinely want to immigrate legal or employ legal immigrants. It's like what that last guy said, America has a huge appetite for cheap labor that many of these illegal immigrants are satisfying. They are just trying to escape poverty or in some cases violence in their home country. Can you blame them?
The law is always flexible. It's never black and white. If that was the case any time you committed a crime everyone would always get punished by the same sentence. In reality, the justice system is a complicated mesh of appeals, reduced sentences, parole etc. This is because we acknowledge that human circumstances are unique and there can always be extenuating circumstances.....
Why don't people view immigration law the same way? It's different for each person, it's never that black and white.

@@shinmyung92 i do understand the part about ethics, but the problem is that the people only focuses on the ethics of the matter, and not much more.
And that in society, governance, and life itself its considered short sighted to only focus on a single issue. Especially when said issue is "ethics" which nowadays seems to follow what is trending.
But no economy is able to handle a constant in flux of "cheap labour". Not only are there national security concerns coming from rampant illegal immigration, the debt ridden country cant sustain handing welfare benefits to any random smuck who comes into country.
And all of this is to blatantly ignore the inhumane methods by which some people are being smuggled/brought in. Which ironically direct goes against the "ethics" that people are supposedly fighting for.

    1. Regularization of narcotics in America, like the way we do with cigarettes and alcohol.
    2. Stop consuming narcotics
It is not America's apettite for cheap labor, it is we are short labor, Americans most reproduce at rate of 3 kids for each couple, we are failing on that topic, even if we start now, we most wait 2 decades to start using that work force, also we have to tell those new workers that they should be working in fields growing produce, cleaning services, restaurants and every single low pay job, because we conceived them to fill all those jobs that our economy needs, in my case I do not conceive kids with that purpose in America.

Personally I would rather stop human traffickers or cartels than migrants just trying to find a better home. Also I would rather use that money to maybe rebuild our crumbling infrastructure like urban/suburban sewage, bridges or roads. Immigrants believe or not provide a boost to our economy. Georgia years back before Trump and this nonsense, tried to deport their illegal immigrants from the state. Majority of those people were helpers for the agricultural industry, at the time one of the top 3 industries for the state's economy. When they realized oh crap we just destroyed our production they had to try to find those deportees back spending even more state money. Walls wont do crap, especially when there are Americans that help with human and drug trafficking. There were times where border cities had warehouses with tunnels in them that lead back and forth under the border. Cubans used boats and landed in Miami. When you dont have anything to lose, they're creative and tenacious.

I am shocked to see such racism all around! If we all hate migrants so much, then let’s send them all back to Central America BUT BEFOREHAND….we need to tell our daughters and sons to apply for immigrant jobs including fruit picking under 40 degree sun, clean our toilets toilets, building out Houses, cleaning sidewalks, our subways, our hallways and streets here in North America (and Europe too)… with the way we westerners bring up our kids today (most of them are spoiled and refuse to earn low income), I would like to see how many of our kids would come and show up to do those “shitty” jobs that none of our kids nor us want to do anyway! Even in Europe where I come from, people have become so lazy when they have no clue that migrants are the ones suffering to make their “shitty european” lives better!

For this special case about water in the desert, I still think it is a good result… but it is not sure.
For example, the boat to pick up the migrant in front of Lybia to “save their life” (while the migrant put themselves in purpose in this situation to be pick up by these “humanitarian boats”) are definitely doing much more bad and death that if they were doing nothing. Because migrant go to the sea on crappy boat without enough petrol to cross the sea because they expect to be pick up by these boats… otherwise they won’t go on these boat. Like australia did, they had the same kind of problems, and they said clearly, nobody coming by boat will ever be allowed on our soil, and they sent back people to some démocratie safe country but not australia… result people stop using boat to try to reach Australie, and the number of death on sea move from a lot each year… to no death. While in Mediterranean Sea there are still dozen thausands people dying… because they are attracted by these “humanitarian boat” and because of the week law of Europe.
Good intention being hell (hell for Europe receiving these people who create so much problems once in Europe, and death to some of them on the sea)
So when I see good deed done to migrant, I am always “wait and think more.. not sure the result is as positive as the people doing the action think”

@sneksnekitsasnek it’s just an extension of logic, it’ll either be for resources or for land to move people onto. Why deal with border issues if you can just own the whole deal and put the “offenders” into a system that makes the others feel safe. You know, just how it works now but with more land and less money spent on borders.

    • @eyeexaggerate7687

@sneksnekitsasnek I understand that, but an amalgamation is what is actually happening and the border will dissolve over time much in the same way that laws do. I mean, think of the rate that we’re consuming resources (I’m in Canada, by the way), it’s not sustainable. Who do you think will get the lion’s share (in the west)?

You can't live in other countries without a work visa, refugee status or citizenship. People vacation in the USA and other parts of the world all the time, sure. But I don't understand how you can have family in two countries without dual citizenship. And people will do anything, anything to protect non-citizens. I just don't get it.

I think the guy at 8:57 put it well. The problem is in public perception and policy enforcement. Fear mongering in politics has painted migrants to be criminals seeking to freeload off of American prosperity, when the reality is that migrants could actually fulfill American demand for cheap labor. Poor policy enforcement has forced migrants to enter the US illegally or literally die trying. And for true asylum seekers facing imminent death if they were to stay in their home countries, the current system is atrocious.

i assume where there is a wall there used to be a popular crossing place, which I also assume affects land and property value negatively? so where there isn't a wall becomes a new hub, and its value perhaps drops? who owns the lands affected, and if there have been changes in land values as a result of the wall alone could be an interesting subject to explore.
