    Eskrima was outlawed by the Spanish for being ‘too dangerous’.
    Eskrima (Arnis or Kali) is the national sport of the Philippines which emphasizes on hand to hand combat as well as weapon-based fighting which employs the use of sticks, knives, bladed weapons, and various improvised weapons.
    What you may not know about this particular martial arts style is that it was prohibited during the Spanish invasion, and yet still exists to this day because the locals were able to disguise the powerful fighting style as a dance.
    Bruce Lee is regarded as one of the greatest martial artists, if not the greatest master of the art to ever live. His art revolutionized cinema forever, changing the way the western world perceived martial arts. Over the course of his life, Lee’s fame came not only from his films, but also from the creation of his own art. Jeet Kun Do, “the way of the intercepting fist,” drew influences from every art Lee studied, which included Filipino martial arts.
    What many may not know is that Lee was an avid practitioner of the Filipino escrima (stick fighting). Danny Inosanto (a Filipino American), one of Lee’s closest friends and finest students, introduced him to the art. Inosanto recalled how Lee at first “took a pretty dim view of it” but later explained “what he liked and didn’t like about escrima.” Inosanto believes “what changed (Lee’s) mind was the emphasis on the empty hands and seeing through the movies that it had a lot of functional value.” From the repertoire of Bruce Lee masterpieces, two films stand out the most in terms of Lee’s links to Filipino martial arts - “Enter the Dragon” and “Game of Death.”

      Also, the knife fighting.. There was a good reason why the spanish banned knifes in the Philippines back then (which lead to the funny custom of eating only with fork and spoon till today). Also, the butterfly knife, was invented in the Philippines.
      Also, did you know that a lot of Karate originated out of Eskrima? After analyzing some of the moves, tracing back the history and age of both martial arts, they found out, that japanese sailors brought the martial arts they learned in the Philippines and from filipino sailors back to Okinawa and the rest is history.
      And the thing about the influence of Eskrima, or FMA in general, on Bruce Lee and his fighting, was already told above.
      It is maybe the most underrated and underappreciated martial arts in the world.

      @@hypno5690 you could say that MMA is more applicable for it was shown on TV. The practice of Eskrima is really to kill. There is no middle ground. The reason why they use rattan sticks is to replace Bolo's or machete's so they can practice technique. Once you get in the opening of your enemy you don't just punch him so you can knock him out. Your intent is to kill him. Ask any Eskrimador or Guro. kali is 1 hit 1 kill.

    I am a black belt FYI. Back in the day (late 80's)with my sifu you couldnt just get a black belt. You had to persevere and prove you earned it. My grand master Chen said it takes 10 years of intense training to get to the level to even prove you can earn a black belt. I have been doing Martial Arts since I was 6yrs old. I tested for belts every time I was eligible. They had rules when you could test and when you couldnt. I didn't make black until i was 16. You couldnt just do forms and memorize moves either. You had to take full force punches in the body and still fight off other black belts, you had to fight in black belt club and defend yourself against 4 other seasoned black belts attacking you at the same time from all directions. You had to specialize in a weapon, and prove competency of moves by breaking boards to show they were at full strength not just show. I went to a dojo later in my life and was so disappointed by what i saw. Little kids smaller than this one with black belts, overweight 300lb women with black belts that you could clearly see were not capable of defending themselves in a real fight from slow weak improper punches (wrist bent 90deg down and locked elbows) to weak and slow blocks and kicks, uncoordinated forms, soft flabby bodies that would break into pieces at the slightest blow. I was stunned. These people wouldnt get past orange belt in my dojo with my sifu. Watching this reminded me of that experience. 10yrs old and already black belt? Really how many years has he been practicing? 2? 3? He is leaving himself open and hesitating multiple times just in this demonstration. That would not pass in my day. I guess these kids are just paychecks to the trainers now...

      @PhinTheShoto Год назад

      @@codenamepyro2350 this is from a Filipino who trained Kali in the Philippines. In the Philippines, learning Kali is actually commonplace since it’s part of the Education System of schools. Weapons are everywhere for us from knives (people don’t look at you the wrong way when you have knives or machete depending on where you are. Countrysides is just normal to have machetes), sticks or even common every day items. Local community cops (in the Philippines, they’re there to make sure their neighborhood is behaving. They work alongside the real cops) they’re always armed with Kali sticks.
      Weapon laws differs from country to country but I do understand what you mean. The police trains in this, the military trains in this, locals trains in this in order to literally defend themselves. It’s practical to our day to day life for just self defense and sport. Funnily enough, the Philippines treats Kali just like Muay Thai where they have it as a national tradition, but focus more on their combat sport. (Hell we don’t even have ranking systems or belts) You’re either a student or the instructor to us.
      Kali in America differs from this because they do focus more on traditional stuff and using of rankings (as is the martial business for other countries nowadays). Every martial arts will have their own flaws. All martial arts are practical to a certain point. Muay Thai and Kali is useless to a certain point no matter how practical the martial art is.

    I spent half a decade in kali and no aspect is easy. The hand eye coordination to block and repost a stick is incredible. I am still amazed at what I learned and taught my kids as well. Grandmaster Manaois was incredible to watch and with one stick could defend two people easily. This kid is on the right path, do arts not drugs.

      @@maxzhao8331 it's not Mcdojo. What you were looking at were drills designed to increase speed and eye hand accuracy. I love when people assume what they watch is what a "fight" would actually look like. Real combat lasts mere seconds.

      @@maxzhao8331 Do you understand the difference between combat and a combat sport? I'm guessing not. They can't live spar. It's not a sport. They train to learn muscle memory and reflexes. Asking someone to live spar in combat arts is like asking someone to do airsoft training with live ammo. These arts are proven in actual life or death combat in wars. That's what they are taught for. Not for some use in a cage with pads and a referee. Yes you can effectively use the skills that are taught in an MMA gym on the street in a fight. But understand the levels of force.
