FIRE ALARM SYSTEM TAKEOVER | NATIONAL COMPANY | WEEKLY VLOG

  • A weekly vlog following my visit to takeover a fire alarm system of a historical property where the previous maintenance company was a National well known fire alarm company.
    In this video I talk about what is generally done on a takeover of a fire alarm system and what should happen during a maintenance service visit.
    I discover they don't test the sounders when they attend. They don't test all detectors. They don't provide pro-active advice to the client which would help save lives in the event of a fire.
    I often get told our prices are higher than what they are already paying. When I takeover a system, I don't get complaints that the price isn't good value for money. Do you get what you pay for?

    If I could get a quid for each time a client said "No one has ever tested a cellar detector" I would be rich lol. Even when void detectors need testing a majority of engineers just cannot be bothered. This is were the good fire engineers are separated from the lazy. Those who stress all documents are correct and up to date and that client is aware of there zones ie cellar as you mention. Conventional systems; are the zones labelled correctly etc has the client had any fire system weekly test training etc. Keep up the Good work dan.

      Jason Jenkin I know. Tell me about it! It also goes against prevention of false alarms. We have Nimbus systems on many of our fire alarms we maintain and you cannot get away with saying you've tested it when you haven't as it records everything a system does. It is quite frightening how many companies do not test detectors in the way they should including some of the larger organisations. Thanks for watching and subscribing!

    Awsome video mate, I know it's old but made be think of a site I attended today, previous company just tested, no recommendations and the site was really bad, was an L4 but site is occupied constantly, ground floor only had battery operated detectors that were all dead and probably has been for quite some time, at the end of the day we need to protect our clients and cover your own back, I note everything down, can sleep at night that way too. always do a 100% test when I can on small sites. Good vid mate, like your e5 stuff too, good listen in the van.. Might have to pick your brain one day 👍

      Exactly. Its common sense really. We can all set off a few sounders and squirt some smoke but that isn't servicing, it's much more than that. Cheers mate and thanks for watching.

    We use Nimbus system with addressable systems. You can schedule what devices to test on each visited and generates a report of which devices have been tested along with date and time... It removes the probability of someone not doing their job properly. Also great for commissioning new systems to check that zone and labels are correct 👍

      It is a fantastic bit of kit. I've used Nimbus for years.

    The previous engineer might have disabled the sounders when completing a test walk.
    But would would add them back and do a loud test at the end.

    Looks like quite common issue during take overs from my experience as well

    • @DanstheEngineer
      @DanstheEngineer  6 лет назад

      Michał W incredibly common. Some clients may see it as a nuisance because ultimately it costs but some are very understanding and want to improve their system

    confirm no way to disable sounders.

    The link from the Fire Alarm to the Digi Communicator of the Intruder system does not need to be fire rated as the link is a normally closed link going open in event of fault or fire, it is normally monitored EOL resistor, so fire open circuit, cable damaged, open circuit, cable melted by fire fault activation due to loss of EOL

    • @DanstheEngineer
      @DanstheEngineer  5 лет назад

      Yes it does. It's a critical path which all needs to be rated accordingly in the event of a fire. If it is set up for fault due to a fire damaging the cable, it may not be able to provide a more important signal...... FIRE.

    Hi Dan, new subscriber here, enjoying the videos very helpful. I am looking to do a fire alarm course, any recommendations on which one to do or any specific trainer?
    Cheers

    • @DanstheEngineer
      @DanstheEngineer  6 лет назад

      Dan Londt hi Dan. Thanks for subbing and watching my videos. I can certainly help here. I believe the start should be FIA training. It used to be several modules and each module was a day but they've just updated the training to more in depth per module. It's to increase the level of compentency.
      Are you an electrician and do you have experience with fire alarms?
      You can also do manufacturer training to work on specific panels. Most is free.
      The link to the FIA training www.fia.uk.com/training.html Let them know I sent you their way!

      Dans the Engineer thanks for getting back to me so soon, yes I'm an electrician, I'm currently in the domestic side of the trade. I'd like to gain more skills and knowledge and try venture into the commercial side and fire safety. Thanks for the information, I'll let them know you said hi 👍🏻

    • @DanstheEngineer
      @DanstheEngineer  6 лет назад

      Dan Londt that's great. Just make sure you read up on your documentation and have an understanding BEFORE you start working on commercial and fire alarm systems. Although I do domestic, commercial is my back ground what I tend to prefer. Obviously any help I can give, I will

      Dans the Engineer cheers mate will read up and do a course before trying to do an install, appreciate the help and advice. I’m thinking of going on my own in the domestic side of things doing the odd jobs here and there, but would like to try get in with a company for the commercial side. Any advice for a domestic spark trying to get on the commercial side?

    Hi Dan, sorry a bit off topic but I did a domestic installer/17 edition course about 3yrs ago and was looking for some weekend work or eventually full time work. Could you help or have any contacts? Thanks enjoy your channel. Ross

      R P hi. Unfortunately it isn't something I can help with. We don't typically do domestic work at weekends. It's mainly commercial for shutdowns which can't be done in the week. You may struggle to find a company who only want someone at the weekend but there's forums online plus LinkedIn is good to make a post to see who might be able to help

    Hi 'Dan I've got a few questions about your role are you site-based or mixture of office and site based. What's your official title?

    • @DanstheEngineer
      @DanstheEngineer  6 лет назад

      ranson3 I'm a company director so my role is more office based but I spend alot of time on site running jobs. I get heavily involved in commissioning and programming of systems and often assist with maintenance so quality check what is going on and get to know the site. I will get my hands dirty if need be. I am a time served electrician so have been previously worked on sites up until about 5 years ago

    Could they not of used a diode to stop the sounders going off on a sav wire system?

    • @DanstheEngineer
      @DanstheEngineer  6 лет назад

      I can't see why they would. The site is closed on the day they service so setting sounders off isn't an issue and the client says they have never heard the sounders during the servicing twice a year. It just seems odd and either way they are not performing a service correctly.
