- Adding sound treatment materials referred to as " sound deadening " to the trunk will help to reduce road noise, and improve bass performance, but how is it done? How can we add this butyl rubber and acoustic foam combination material called SoundSkins? In the latest step for #cafstealthbuild I show you how!
A special thanks to SoundSkins for sponsoring this video.

6lbs each roll, 18lbs total of sound deadening. I highly doubt anyone is going to notice a difference in fuel economy and performance.
no, you'll just notice the weight loss of your wallet...
Lol people bitch about 20 pounds but the 400 pound and subwoofer set up is not factored In lol
I drive a Honda... so I beg to differ hahahaha
I wonder how much it'd weigh to do the whole car...I want to do this in my civic now. Even if it's 8 times the amount he used, that's still only 200 pounds.
bobwinslow shouldnt take more than 6 rolls with a civic and that's going hard on it so basically 36 pounds but unless your full racecar mode and fully gutted why would it matter hell ide even consider using on a gutted car to reduce road and motor noise especially with how loud civics can get
Mark, when cleaning the metal surface prior to applying the sound deadening material, recommend 3M prep solvent 70. This is professional grade surface prep and I can personally attest that it works beautifully. Likewise, gently heating the sound deadening material with a blow dryer while applying helps you mold it into place easier. Nice work on the videos.
Hi I'm one of the lucky few that has a teacher with a greater understanding of the subject matter in a way that is quiet well constructed and easy to follow, not everything is a super build some of it is everyday use. It your technique and Template style of carrying the subject matter through to conclusion. Thank you I watch a lot of your video information work shop's.
You have mentioned in previous videos, as well in this one, the good points of Soundskins. Have you used other brands of sound deadening? What is the difference? Since I retired, my audio budget has been dramatically restricted and I don't want to spend the extra money if the difference isn't noticeable. Not sure you can make a video like that due to sponsorship restrictions. ;-) Thanks for all the great videos. You are the #1 channel for car stereo installation. I recommend you often to others. Keep up the good work!
Hey Mark, I'd love to see you use a LOT of this to treat every surface of a loud car (like say, a 1990's Honda Civic) into a very quiet car, maybe with a DB comparison when the car's at speed? I want to see if it will get me to Lexus level quiet without Lexus overall weight. If it took eight times this amount of material, it'd still only be 200 pounds extra, or near enough stock weight not to care. This could be a game changer for tuners who daily their cars. Thanks for all the helpful videos!
The Civic (or other economy cars) don't have the right type of glass for low noise transmission. A lot of sound comes through the glass. :)
Once again I decided to you first thing this morning 👈😎👉. And then off to watch DB next. Another great vid Mark, ✌️out 😎
Bro you the best ! Thanks for you time ✌️
Surely replacing the old sound deadening with new stuff is so much better...... Btw mark love this channel 👌... You got another sub 😂 👍
Your videos are awesome. If there is one thing i miss you to go a bit deeper with, it is the noise insulation. A video where you describe how to make the car as quiet as possible. If i have understood it right, the best way is to 1) add a layer of butyl, 2) add a layer of closed cell foam and 3) add a layer of mass loaded vinyl. Is that right?
Great video Mark!!! 👍👍👍 How much does each roll of that pro sound skin cost??? How affective is it??? I would love to buy some for my two suv builds if it's really works well!!! Those door speaker soundskin rings look awesome aswell!!!
Okay I'm back Mark that's what video review I can't wait to see what this build brings
Hey man thanks for all your videos! So help full and full of info! I have a question so I have a full size SUV how important is it to sound proof the back area of the SUV? I was only going to do the doors..
And a additional non related. I’m about to put some components in the front how important is it to match coaxials in the rear? Or really shouldn’t make a huge difference because it’s just back fill.. I see different views of thought just wondering your opinion... thanks!!!
Thanks for the video!
I’d like a befor and after sound treatment. Like an audio comparison, decibal comparison.
would be pretty minimal. need MLV to make the big leap in lowering in cabin noise.
what's MLV, not familiar with the acronym
Mass Loaded Vinyl. some cars use some form of it stock. many cars at least on the firewall. it's even used in the home behind drywall and under floors. most often in home theater applications, or anywhere isolation from outside noise is wanted.
Where do you use Mass Loaded Vinyl? In this case, would you glue it in the trunk in the same way he's doing the SoundSkins? And what thickness and weight? 1/4", 1lb?
I have a huge vibration issue in my Saab 9-3 when the sub is turned up and particularly in the doors where there are 6.5 woofers. Was good to see I only need to put patches on not completely cover the interior. I will do the whole doors though.
I like the diagonal layout for the amps
AMAZING job. BUTTTT you covered the factory RPO codes!! As a mechanic these are very important!!
Love the videos!
nice video. clean install. are you using the fire resistant techflex?
I have 2003 Nissan Almera, and I have done the whole trunk, front doors and some plastic panels with some butyl/aluminium sheets. Definently better sound and much less road noise. Also no noticable difference on fuel economy
Hey Marc I was wondering if you could do a video on how to fix the tailight rattling in a rear deck panel specifically for a Honda Accord Coupe 2009
It would be nice to see a comparison between this and some of the other products. I put a set of headphones inside a helmet for my motorcycle commuting and I used.....wait for it.... Craft foam from Wal-Mart that has adhesive on one side. Cuz I'm broke now that I have a family. I got 6 colors of notebook paper sized adhesive back foam pieces for less than 6-7 dollars. Of course I (having a background in upholstery) made a cover that zips around my neck to keep bugs and stuff out from getting drawn into the face. But I can enjoy the commute now as opposed to hearing all the turbulent air at high pressure levels.
Someone had given me some dynomat (after I finished my project)....but I would hate to find the results being the same (or worse) plus the dynomat at least has lead in it. And although I don't plan on licking it...it is a bit closer to the breathing in than some may consider healthy. Thoughts?
Awesome channal. I am looking for info how insulate my car from tyre noise and loundess at higher speed escpecialy from trunk/back. I am from EU and I can purchase Noico or Klimat sound deading/foam.
Yep all about compromising for loud music i get 7 mph but im so loud i cant hear the road noise or rattling and big rim hog gas and power to but its different .i do have some vids of this truck on my channel its a 94 f150 regular cad long bed with 4 12s in back window
Saludos desde Guadalajara Jalisco México muy buenos tutoriales
Hell ya brother
Git r Done!!!
I am 200 Million!!
great video, wonder what it cost to do the whole truck?
Instead of just sound deadening materials, have you tried seam welding as well? We did that in my Yukon and it worked great.
That looks great.. I wouldn't even put the trunk material back in, it looks better this way. :D
would be curious about he rear upper deck of some cars and how to treat them. thanks for this great video!
Yes, this for sure...
what are your thoughts on treating the roof behind the headliner?
Nice work Mark! Thank you for this!
Awesome video!!
Hello! Thanks for the videos and whats your take on the Soundskin roll vs some solid CLD squares? Thank you!

Great video I have a question would it matter what season would be best in applying this application...right now it Jan in alabama where I'm at. I'm thinking about doing it while it's cooler than the summer? Also would the pro be better for a toyota camry 2011? Thank you
Great work as always. To anyone that thinks you can add subs and race stick with 10s or 8s. Audiophiles the same.if you want comp series hard hits? You aren't racing. Car is basically a transport for equipment.
That 5.3 doesnt get much for fuel economy too begin with. I havent noticed a change in mine since i started adding audio... "accessories"
One thing though. If you dont have displacement on demand programmed out. Do it. Gets rid of the helicopter noise when in 4cyl mode and helps with oil consumption.
I did massive amounts of sound treatment years back in my Prius (because they produce hella road noise) and the weight made little difference. The noise was reduced but def not eliminated. Was kinda disappointing actually. I do sound dampening in all my cars but will not go as crazy with it as I did on my old prius.
What were the best target areas to reduce road noise in a prius? Mines loud too but I don’t wanna go crazy or add extra weight.
Does sound skins work as a heat barrier as well as a sound treatment? Looking for a product or combination of products to greatly reduce the interior temperature ( dark green truck in west Texas = interior temperatures in the hundreds when windows are up and AC isn't on) Really looking to sound/heat treat the entire interior of the vehicle as well as areas underneath, aka transmission tunnel, and really looking for the best product for heat suppression as well as sound treatment.
So when doing sound treating, would you lay down the soundskin first if you are also doing a layer of heat shielding or vise versa?
what is the correct way of making a thermal insulation in the trunk, have you lined it all or just some parts?
Would be interesting to have a race class with the best sounds full install with 1 or 2 sub's and be the lightest and the fastest.
hi mark thanks for the video was very interesting, am planning to install the mats on the trunk flooring of my Town & country van with a Noico 80 mil + Noico 120 mil foam once i get it done and place the carpets back.. once a while i do get my car cleaned carpets vaccumed and shampoo'ed will this cause any problem for the sound deadening sheets i would have installed.... your advice please ??? thanks
I wonder how tis product would compare on a floor vs using dynamat with dynapad on top of it.
I have 2 12s in ny c400 and Im starting to get annoyed with the truck rattle its gotten worse , I hope this will help
Great vid mark. What's the best sound deadening material on a budget.😎😎😎😎
Raygan Davis Of course Sound Skin cause they keep the lights on at the shop
Ok. I was just wondering I'm on a budget. I sound deadening material is expensive. Especially because I live in the Caribbean. I was just thinking if this brand is cheaper and better.
Sew foam, AKA headliner material.
Dynamat is cheaper, but not necessarily better. 'Course it is better if you can afford it and can put it in as opposed to not afford better so you don't put it in... lol
Nioco
Lol the name “Beau” is pronounced as “bo” or “boh”.. lol when I heard you say the name I was like wth kind of name is that lol then when I looked I LOL’d .. good video buddy!
Mark I have done the same thing to my trunk now my deck lid makes noise what is my solution to this vibration note I did not install any sound skin to deck lid will applying sound dampening to the deck lid help ?
Mark, I can’t remember what subwoofers you are using. I have a 2006 Impala which has a trunk very similar to yours.
how can you make the rubber flaps that release pressure in trunk to be quiet? subwoofer pressure is pushing those flaps so hard up and down so they make terrible noise so can i somehow make them quiet without removing them
What about the areas under the panels to each side of the trunk areas? The wheel wells?
Very good 😉
Does it help with heat ? I mean as isolating just a bit? If not what can I use without making it too bulky?
So my question is.. I have seen you have amplifiers and that stuff near your reserve so.. Is it dangerous have amplifiers and stuff near lpg tank like instead of reserve ?
One question with regards to cutting up the sound dampening material, is it less effective to cut it into smaller pieces and then apply everywhere to maximize coverage and reduce waste ? OR is it recommended to use entire sheets and try to mold a big sheet as is ?
Kojy try to cut it so that it’s not one big sheet. for example if your door has a curve, cut 2 pieces to form at the curve instead of one big sheet pressed onto it
Worried about weight go with neo subs and lithium batteries had to. Do it in my suburban because truck weighed 7150 lbs I am down. To 6500 and feels so much better even with suspension upgrades
You kinda answered one of my questions, but I have another. Is there any material that will cut out noise does it’s job for the subs but won’t cut fuel economy? My car gets great economy and I don’t really want to lose it to bad. But at the same point I want my subs back in
What about the rear deck do you treat it from the bottom or the top or does it even matter?
How well does this material do compared to Dynamat??
Does the trunk interior go back in the same way or does it not fit anymore?
Can somebody please explain how I can use the acoustic foam on a door that sits in a stock pod due to water proofing? I see people always putting it on the outer door skin but they have no pods and haven't seen any tutorials for people who have pods
So does this stop rattling and leave a clean smooth bass ? I’m not a fan off rattling at all, I like that clean deep bass with no rattles
Yeah!
Hi Mark, i have a problem with that air vent duct behind the rear bumper, for some reason when hitting the bass the vents start rattling and i can hear it from the outside of the car and its a very annoying. Can you help what can i do to solve this problem? Thanks!
I have question, what causes the bass of rear deck speaker (parcel tray) got cancelled? Is it has to do with the trunk or the parcel tray?
for the last 6 years I've been building my 95 Mustang GT on a rotisserie and my sound deadening includes lizard skin sound and heat coating inside and out of the car, stinger roadkill and medium density foam sheets, plus the jute from the carpet...it should sound like a Lexus inside
What about the trunk lid?. That’s what is vibrating the most on my 08 mustang
What do I do about the rattle that comes from the vent that's in the side wall of the trunk area ?
Did you sound skin the trunk lid?
yes
Is soundskins worth the extra money when compared to Memphis Audio MOJO May?
Would it be safe to sound treat the rubber flap and plastic surround in the trunk over by the bumper? I have seen about how it's to prevent the back window from braking when closing the doors or trunk. I have also seen that it's for preventing your ears from pooping when closing the trunk lid or car doors. Does anyone know if I do block the flaps would it cause windows shattering or my ears to pop? I ask because if have two 10's in my trunk with 500 watts total to both subs, they're downfirirng in a sealed box. I tell you this because it's part of another question. That question is there's already a lot of bass pressure inside the car so would the ear popping or window shattering be a moot point because of all the bass pressure in the trunk? I have a 2005 Chevy Malibu classic. Mid sized sedan. Has anyone covered up these inside rubber/plastic bumper flaps without any of the above concerns happening? If so how long has it been since you have done this? I don't know a lot about soundwaves or science. Please help.
Will doing this help improve the sound of a stock audio system? Specifically the 10 speaker setup from the Honda accord
What about the truck lid rattle?? Do you take the same steps???
Do you have any videos installing systems on boats?
What are the materials that the tiles are made of? If anyone knows and would be appreciated.
Have you further sound proofed a Lexus LS 460? Curious what your tips might be.
Tired to locate sound rings for the door under the company listed nothing came up!? So I moved on to a different company thank you for trying.
What alternative is there to the soundskins rings? They dont ship to the US and their new version does not come out until march.
Most folks need to understand that the mileage really isn't going to be noticeably different once you've added the sound treatment material and sound hardware; it's going to, at best, be tenths to hundredths of a mile per gallon. And, with a lot of cars these days, you can easily regain that lost mileage by retuning the engine if it's really going to be that much of an issue.
or go get some more gas..
what is your advice on vents of the trunk rattling?
Remove the vents and wrap with some TESA tape then reinstall.
M AR wrap it? like close it?
What do you do about the spoiler on a car? Add sound deadening material to the roof of the trunk?
What do you do with those air vent flaps in the trunk? Those rattle a TON with the bass. Super annoying. I've heard mixed things where you need them for circulation/pressure in the cabin etc. So I'm a bit conflicted on how to deal with the flaps.
don't mess with the flaps
Hey will sound deadened keep my new car panels from loosening up
My trunk rattles a lot mostly where the spare tire is supposed to go. Will this stop the rattling?
We're going to start the trunk build in a few weeks. Pulling out the old system and buying new wires, subs, amps, etc.. Starting fresh and with the thought in mind, would laying 2-3 layers of sound deadening be over doing it or would it double the sound. I have 4 12s and a 2400.1 going in so it's going to be major trunk and windshield flopping no matter what. Help please. Ha
So you think it's a huge difference between the single layer and the double?
you get 95% effective sound dampening with 30% coverage. Everything after that is diminishing returns. You're not going to double any sound by adding extra layers. If you want to increase your spl, double the amount of woofers, and/or double the amount of power. Each doubling in this fashion in theory is good for about 3db each. Say you have one 12 on 300w and are getting 100 db. to hit 103 db either add another 12, or bump your power up to 600w. if you do both, you would hit 106db, and so on. Adding sound deadening keeps you from losing that energy through the body panels of the vehicle.
i subscribed
I love great sound, but if i was going build a fast car i would still use a sound damping and some kind of good sound, like just mids and highs... no heavy subs, maybe small shallow mount subs like jl audio has.
What exactly is the acoustical foam? Is it closed cell foam is it mass loaded vinyl?
Not mass loaded vinyl (MLV)
Its open cell foam.
With open cell and closed cell foam the sound absorbion rate it determined by the (R) value at a given musical Hz.
It stops the reflection wave (not the direct wave) of the sound arriving at your ears at a different time
In the home depot u find the same material for way ship and it works pretty good ... and less weight.....
The stuff at home depot you are talking about is probably roof liner. Which has a track record for being stank, it's tar like, and adhesion not lasting very long after a while on a lot of vehicle surfaces when it gets hot, coupled with constant vibrations. Sure, it works for the time being, but after a while can be problematic.
why you dont heating up the product before instalation...?
i have a subwoofer box where the spear wheel was, should i cut out the spaces for the rubber feets of the subwoofer box or doesnt it make a difference ?
I got a question I have 2 10s in my jeep renegade wheel area with bandpass box. I have added deadner to roof and under box trunk area . When I turn speakers up sounds like I'm under. Car wash vibrates and sounds like I'm in a barrel maybe flexing not sure please help. Can some give me steps to make the rear area sound clean and not move all the panels and no flex????
No before after sound check?
I want them to here me coming 3-5 blocks well this product help for that?
What i would like is a DB meter to proove noise before and after.
These hand motions 😂
"Cleaning Solution".... does all purpose cleaner work? like Simple Green?
do u have those rings for 6x9 speakers?
The great thing about circle is that it can easily be converted to an oval
Well I guess the tire well is "well" covered!
@Captain Buff The Third lmao thanks bro
😂 no bueno
@@ramonloera360 we'll never know :p
😂😂😂kill me again please 😂😂
What the initial process you used to sound treat the trunk with those tiles? What's the name of the product used? That should have been explained first before proceeding with the soundskins.
