Tour de France - Drinking Raids - When the riders used to stop at cafes and take what they wanted.

  • Here's one of the most important moments of the tour: drinking raids.
They enter a cafe, shoving everyone aside.
It isn't quite looting, but they demand and take anything; red wine, champagne, beer.
Even water, if there's nothing better.
Actually, they really should be drinking water.
Then they're off, usually without paying.
After the Tour de France, the director of the tour receives a number of bills.
Sometimes they lose two or three minutes and have to chase the pack for the next 20 km.

I love how professional sports were more chill back in the day. Imagine a TDF rider today just gulping down on a glass bottle of wine during the race.

I rode with a veteran of old tours. In the race he drank some red wine, cracked a raw egg in the bottle, topped it off with water, shook it up, and stuck it in his jersey. there were no service cars, riders carried their own spares and to eat you rode off the front, pulled into cafe, ate, then caught back up to peloton after they passed you while you ate. My favourite high school French teacher was an old Tour rider in the 80s who won the Chemise Jaune. He moved to North America after retiring from cycling to teach French language, literature, history and social studies. I remember going to academic conferences (field trips) in the 90s and all the female French teachers from other schools swooning and flirting with him as an old sports celebrity.
Handsome, jovial, friendly man who took an interest in me as a young student athlete while I was going through some troubling family issues at home. My life could have gone very dark without him.

My mother is from a small village close to Pézenas in the south of France, an area where people drink more wine than water. In the 40s, as a teenager, she used to work in the vineyards. One hot day of summer, the Tour de France came in the village. Of course the riders raided the local pub. One rider was already drunk, drank more wine, and had to make a break at the exit of the village. Quickly he fell asleep under a tree. About 2 hours later, he woke up and was fit enough to ride again, alone... Surprisingly, that day, this drunk rider won the stage : all the others had taken the wrong way and got lost !
